Updating as I go this time . . .

MARTINA'S NOVEMBER READING CHALLENGE - 5/10 FINISHED

In the wee hours of this morning I finished Atlantis Unmasked (Warriors of Poseidon, #4) by Alyssa Day (★★★1/2).

This is one of those PNR "brotherhood" series that reads like a UF that we're seeing a lot of these days. If you've read J.R. Ward's "Black Dagger Brotherhood" or Gena Showalter's "Lords of the Underworld" series then you know what I'm talking about. Each book features a different couple and a different mission or stage of the overall series battle. And yes, while the couple does hook up at the end, it certainly isn't a HEA because the series struggle is still continuing into the next book.

This particular book is about the Atlantean warrior, Alexios, and the one of the human rebellion leaders, Grace. Most of the story is an internal struggle for the two of them to overcome issues from their past so that they can be together, but there's also a mission to recover the Vampires Bane, a jewel that the Atlanteans need in order to raise Atlantis once again.

As for the writing, the style is closer to Showalter than to Ward. It's a good read, but doesn't blow your socks off. I'll still be picking up the next one, though.

I fear my chances of finishing this month are rapidly diminishing. Where did all my time go?

MARTINA'S NOVEMBER READING CHALLENGE - 6/10 FINISHED

I just finished Netherwood (A SHOMI novel)by Michele Lang (★★★). This book is more futuristic action adventure romance than typical PNR.

In the future our reality is more plugged into the virtual than the real. Talia is the chosen sucessor to her grandmother - the CEO of FortuneCorp, one of the six worldwide (universe-wide?) conglomerates. Though, her grandmother has "descended" a term used for someone who cheats death by having their consciousness uploaded to the net.

Talia is sent to a FortuneCorp owned planet to discover and detain a saboteur who had cut the planet's access to the internet thereby cutting them off from all interplanetary contact. What she discovers upon arrival is a truth far more sinister than sabotage.

Netherwood is a weird, but scary little story that could almost be a prequel to Battlestar Galactica. It gets kinda techie in its language and might be hard to follow at some times, but as someone who has worked in the tech industry I didn't have any trouble following it. Any Luddites out there will find themselves completely lost.
