TEAM THREAD: Team #3 One Fang Too Many [THIRD PLACE]

No doubt the others will have more opinions for you.
Remember you can read shelf 7 first if you want, whilst waiting for other opinions. LOL.
Amber, personally I enjoyed both books about the same. Although Fever series really is worth reading and I'd really recommend it. :) Maybe not very helpful though, haha...

Rating:4.5 Stars
Review:Chess is juggling so many balls I'm kind of surprised she manages to keep them all in the air. She lies to pretty much everyone. Trying to keep her Church life separate from everything else. Hiding her relationship with Lex from Terrible and Bump. Chess's addictions and job make for gritty reading, edging this urban fantasy deeper into horror territory. At one point I was even reminded of Stephen King's writings, the descriptive imagery used by Kane causing me to shudder with delighted disgust. I will definitely be reading the next book in this series.

Whichever you pick, ENJOY! :)
Daffodil, love the review. You nailed my thoughts exactly.

Wow, where to start? I suppose this could be classified as a sci-fi romance cause it happens on another planet; but they're descended from humans, 400 yrs ago, so they aren't aliens. And they all have psychic powers to some degree. So things happen like 'magic'.
This story of Rand T'Ash, orphaned at 6 to grow up in the Downwind (the slums), and his HeartMate Danith Mallow is anything but predictable.
It was actually a slow read just cause there was so much going on, but very enjoyable.
This is one of those books that I kept putting off and now I don't know why I didn't read it a year ago. LOL.
Will be searching out the other books in this series, especially now I've got the lingo down pat.

I spaced and forgot I could'a started on my next BINGO book. Once I finish with Queen of Shadows, I'll start on my next one. Not sure which it'll be, but thinking maybe Black Wings. I'll let ya know though.

May Have Spoilers
Rachel Vincent has done a great job!!! I am having so much fun reading this series! My Soul to save captured my attention from the beginning and left me wanting more. This was definitely worth my time!
I liked Nash's Reaper brother Tod in My Soul to Take. He was certainly morbid, but considering his job, I don't blame him. I didn't quite understand Nash or Kaylee's father's objections to her being friends with him, at least not until this book. Tod is a curious blend of selfish and selfless. It almost seems like he has a hierarchy where everyone he is friends with or cares for is placed on a certain rung. Unfortunately Kaylee doesn't matter quite as much as his ex-girlfriend Addison, so she pays the price to get Addison safe again. Not that I blame him, Kaylee volunteers herself (and Nash since she knew he wouldn't let her go to the Netherworld by herself) against a lot of opposition. I admire Kaylee for the fact that she's willing to risk everything to help save Addison's soul. Do I wish she had asked more questions before venturing into a place that could lead to her death? Sure, but she went in with the best of intentions. The pacing of this novel is faster than the first book--once the ball gets rolling on the group's game plan things continue to happen one after the other like dominoes. I sometimes wished we could have seen into Tod's head, especially as his actions seem to get shadier and shadier. What we as readers notice about his behavior, Kaylee doesn't. The gradual change in Tod's personality was more apparent to the reader, since we are on the outside looking in. Nash seemed less on top of things in this book, less sure of himself and how to do things. He obviously still wants to believe in Tod, despite the inherent animosity between Reapers and bean sidhe, but is finding it harder and harder. Part of it seems to be jealousy, because Tod pops up and will talk to Kaylee but not show himself to Nash, but some of it is also his protective instincts.
The end is bittersweet, with plans being foiled for everyone. Like the end of My Soul to Take, the answer to the problem seems easy, but the end result is devastating. Its painful to think about what happens to the souls honestly, the ones that are bought/bartered/sold to hellions.
Can't wait to get my hands on the next book :D

Siren Song (Blood Singer #2)

23/12/10 ★★★★
This is a nice follow-up to Blood Song. This book picks up right where we left off in Blood Song. Celia appears to be adjusting well to her new vamp/siren powers and isn't backing down from all of the new threats because of course there are people trying to kill her again. We find out who killed her best friend and we get resolution for her sister who is a ghost. Some of her most trustworthy friends actually turn out to be otherwise, which makes for some interesting twists to the story. Not much of a review but this book tied off a lot of loose ends from the first which made it a good quick read. I really hope we see more from John in the next book, he definitely has more chemistry with Celia than Bruno ever did.
If you like Jeanne C. Steins Anna Strong Series than I think you will like this one.

Grave Witch (Alex Craft #1)
'urbanfantasy-paranormal'
28/12/10 ★★★
In this new urban fantasy we have Alex Craft, a grave witch. Grave witches are witches that can naturally speak to the dead by using what they call "grave sight" when they use this power they can "see" shades of the soul that contains the memories of the deceased. Much like Anita Blake, Alex has clients that use her ability to contact the deceased for court cases, unlike Anita, Alex does not raise zombies. She just talks to their spiritual energy to get answers.
I gave this book 3 stars because there were several situations that made Alex appear to be the most naive stupid heroine I've read about in a long time. For instance, Alex has some very powerful fae trying to kill her so she decides to meet a person she doesn't know at all at a bar that is run by the fae. She wasn't there to kick some a$$ because she didn't really do much of that through the whole book. It's kind of hard to be a kick ass heroine when your "grave sight" power causes you to be blind most of the time. I also did not like how predictable the ending was, I had it figured out halfway through the book.
However, I am looking forward to the next in the series hoping that it won't be so predictable.

:) That I do. And, I agree with Sevie's suggestion. I have read #1-2 of Blood Singer and agree. It would be liked by fans of Anna Strong. Good call, Sevie! We should create a "similar to" thread. I'm always bad with those and get asked that question a bunch. I wouldn't have suggested AS, but when you did, it felt like a great match up.
Great reviews, BTW. I agree with your thoughts on Alex's lack of ? ... street smarts. Shame. I'll be reading that one too though, can't resist a story that's different from the norm.

Please switcheroo ....

I just need to add one for pnr-angeldemon-.... also right?

This book was a bit strange, in that the beginning started off about an agent who escorts the dead. The dead have a choice - the Door (assuming Heaven) or stay on Earth forever as a spirit. The Agent asks three times which they'd prefer, once they answer the 3rd time, it's final, no take-backs. Maddy lives with a gargoyle, Beezle, and he's a hoot. :) Cool, right? Interesting new type story. Then, you meet Maddy's neighbor/tenant Gabriel and from there things get strange, but interesting. I can't think of much to say that wouldn't be spoilery, so I'll just say that her parentage is not what she'd imagined.
I will definitely continue with the series. I'm very interested to see how things progress with Maddy and her potential relationship(s). All in all, a good start to what should be a fun, new UF.

WOOHOO Team!!! :D

J/K...for the most part ;D

Rating: 3,5 stars. I'm feeling nice, so I'll round up to 4. ;)
Review: There's lots to like here. Interesting mythology, diverse creatures/races, a good stong cast of characters and lots of action that moves the plot forward. There was a point in the middle where I was concerned about the author's intentions, but I went with it and while the outcome of the "flashbacks" was a little predictable, it still worked out well. I can see lots of potential in this and will definitely be on the lookout for the next book.
One of the main things that kept this from being a 4 star book was Maddy herself. She's written as a strong character, however for someone who managed to survive on her own since the death of her mother, Maddy makes some pretty uninformed decisions. Smart talk can be an amusing survival skill, but using it all the time can get you in a lot of trouble. Maddy walks into the court of creatures she never even knew existed. She knows nothing of their customs, rules or even their potential magical ability and strength. A reasonably intelligent person would learn as much as possible and stay on guard. Yet, she still feels free to say whatever comes into her head without first considering who or what she might offend. I can also understand the personality conflict with her boss. Lots of people have personaility conflicts with co-workers and bosses. Its a fact of life that not everyone will get along. But part of being a grown up and living in the grown up world is dealing with these issues and showing respect to your superiors in the work place. Again this is something I think Maddy would have learned by now, instead her behavior around JB seems a little juvenile at times.
