I would love to give you a recipe, Mandy, but I'm not much of a cook. I usually get cashew chicken at my local Chinese restaurant. However, I am going to try to make this recipe at home soon.

Haha, I guess it's not surprising that so many of us collect books. :p

Hi Laura! I was just checking out your profile and see you're from Boulder Colorado. Isn't that where Mork and Mindy lived!! That was one of my favourite shows. Have you/Are you living or travelled in Australia?

message 358: by LauraW (new)

LauraW (lauralynnwalsh) | 23 comments I just moved to Colorado from Fairbanks, Alaska, last September. Yes, I traveled to Australia - last March. I visited Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, and Adelaide, and had a marvelous time - meeting people I had known before and people I had gotten to know over the Internet.

I am not sure about Mork and Mindy - it has been 24 years since we had TV, and even before that, we didn't watch much, so I am a bit out of the loop as far as TV goes. My screen time (excessive) is computer time. lol.

LauraW (lauralynnwalsh) | 23 comments I hadn't expected to enjoy Brisbane as much as I did. I stayed at a great B & B - Cream Gables and loved taking the water taxis up and down the river. But I really enjoyed the rest of my visit, too. If Sarah Palin gets elected president (heaven, forbid), I may just move to Australia.

Neko *Waves* Hello Laura!

message 363: by Monya (last edited Feb 09, 2011 03:40AM) (new)

Monya (monyamary) 1. Time of day. Used to be early morning but I don't see it much any more. Now it's the cool evening after a warm day when I can mess around in the garden.

2. Food. Anything I haven't cooked myself, as long as there aren't any chillies in it. What is this thing about hot food being in fashion? Ooh, and fortunately I don't see them often, sponge cake with cream, pavlova, chocolate eclairs, cheesecake. Had the first for my 70th birthday and had indigestion for 2 days. WAH for the loss of my sweet tooth. Or rather the ability of my stomach to cope with the results of my sweet tooth.

3. Iced coffee. Cherry brandy and Advacaat with dry ginger ale. (Not a drinker, haven't got the right taste buds. Or nose. Or head. "Merry" once in my life and all that took was a case of 'flu and a bottle of cough mixture that turned out to contain 10% alcohol.) Rainwater from the tank, run through the purifier!

4. Band/Singer. Heck, never have been a person to leave the radio on. Favourite CD is "Classic Chill". Our next door neighbour is doing a lot of yard work to music lately and he plays popular songs and light classics from the 1940s and 50s. I don't mind at all.

5. Actor/ Gosh, not a teenager anymore with a crush on Audie Murphy. Anyone who does a good job. The bloke with the long name in "Sherlock" last year was interesting.

6. Spot in Australia/ Home. We built it ourselves with our own little paws, when we were in our fifties. Took three years. Solid brick, nine-foot ceilings, STRONG. As my sister the R.E. saleslady said: 'NO ONE builds houses like that anymore.' Mind you, I'd like to travel Oz but haven't seen much of it. Sunset Strip between Broken Hill and Menindee was interesting in 1990.

7. Team/Sport: Don't DO, never have much. Liked tennis and swimming at school, but instructors weren't interested in anyone not good enough to compete. To WATCH: Cricket, cricket and cricket. Rugby league, only State Of Origin.

8. Car: Mine. Oldish (1993), dependable, not so fancy with gadgets that hubby can't fix it himself. HE has a 1978 BMW. Someone paid him with it for a job some years ago. At the time I'd rather have had the money. But he's stopped looking at car ads.

9. Animal. All of them, maybe not grizzly bears. Our current doggie, Blue Heeler/Alsatian cross, now 12 and a half with arthritis. Last one was black Labrador/Blue Heeler cross. Died after dutifully escorting me to the toilet, age 15 and a half. Before that, Blue Heeler/Collie cross. He loved firecrackers. True! Lived to 14 years and 9 months.

Our current cat: Only three years old. Spoiled, fussy, doesn't DO trees or birds, DOES mice. DOESN'T, thank goodness, wander. Worships my hubby who found him in our empty car engine bay. I'm allowed to feed, brush, medicate and pat him. Even, lately, to pick him up. Almost can't, he's h.e.a.v.y. Previous best cat: 'Scruff', furry, clumsy, funny, personality plus.

10. Activity: reading, gardening, (can't bend over any more though, have long handled tools!) talking to friends, going OUT if I can get husband moving. But he's not well, poor dear. AND writing. What I darned well feel like, when I feel like it, and don't care (Much!) if it's published or not. Yep, I know, lack of self discipline.

11. Collecting: BOOKS. Original paintings. My mum found out she was an artist when she was 62. I like still-lifes, flowers. Can only admire expensive ones from a distance. Found a couple of nice 'uns in op shops, even if amateur. Most I've ever paid: $40 (in 1983.)

CHAIRS: From op shops. Ran out of room to put them. Still have a thing about them. Old 'uns with character. JUGS: ditto. VASES: Almost ditto.

Monya (aka Mary)
P.S. Sorry it's a long post.

message 365: by Dale (new)

Dale Renton (dalerenton) Hi all,

I joined the group a few days ago and have been reading rather than commenting - but I'll get around to that! I liked the thread on books on the cloud, and being a "techo" in my regular job, it's a space I've been watching. In the meantime :

My Favourite...
1. Time of Day: Early morning. I like the quiet.
2. Food: My wife is Italian so I've been spoiled with great pasta dishes. Quite a contrast to the mince and potatoes staple of my Scottish childhood.
3. Drink (alcoholic or non-alcoholic): I'm with Ben Franklin on this. Beer. Not all beer; but good beer.
4. Band/singer: Faces/Rod Stewart.
5. Actor: Michael Caine and Sean Connery were my favourites, nowadays Matt Damon does great work.
6. Spot in Australia: Merimbula
7. Sport: Football (soccer). Played for many years and now coach juniors.
8. Car: We've had Audis for years - love them.
9. Animal: My two dogs are sibling Belgian Shepherds - Nacho and Xena. They would appear in my favourite people list, too.
10. Activity : Fishing, kayaking and occasionally, combining the two.
11. Things to collect : Books. I can't throw out, sell or even lend them to anyone who I suspect won't return them.

message 366: by Monya (new)

Monya (monyamary) Hi Dale and welcome. Enjoy the group!

A couple of your answers rang bells that made up the deficiencies in mine. 5: Michael Caine as actor - yes! Always gives his all. So did: Richard Widmark, Tyrone Power, and Deborah Kerr.

11. Books - I'd have a third as many again if all the people who borrowed them had brought them back. No longer lend to anyone but those I trust.

Monya (aka Mary)

message 367: by LauraW (new)

LauraW (lauralynnwalsh) | 23 comments Books - lending I have so many and no more places to put them. If I could find a school that would take them, I would give most of them away. But not my collections of cartoons, political and family life. lol.

2. Food: I love ALL food. It's a curse.
3. Drink (alcoholic or non-alcoholic): hmm, hooked on Brown Bros Dolcetta and Syrah at the moment but like food, I love all drinks. (sigh)
4. Band/singer: loving Dan Sultan at the moment. How hot is he? ;o)
5. Actor: Ummm.......oh so many to like.
6. Spot in Australia: Home. Not so much my itty bitty crappy little house... more where I live. Meh, the house is ok. LOL
7. Team/Sport: I used to love to play all sorts of sports but various ailments changed that. I hate watching sport on tv but love to watch our kids play anything..... and they play a lot!
8. Car: I own a little black Holden Barina
9. Animal: love 'em all
10. Activity: Reading, quilting, spending time with my kids.
11. Things to collect: Books and fabric.

Mandy, sorry I misled you. Not intentional. The "Sherlock" I referred to wasn't the one in the movie but the British two-part T.V. series last year. His name is Benedict something.

Dot (busyozmum) | 116 comments Hi Dale (waves to Dale)
My hubby's name is Dale as well. We also sat next to a guy named Dale at a Christmas party last year. Most unusual to be coming across the name so much lately. You all seem like such amicable blokes. I know my Dale is. (grin)

Mandy, my 24yo son put me onto Dolcetta and Syrah a couple of years ago. I was on the phone to him and he was telling me he was kickin' back with a few mates and red wine. Well, I knew he wasn't a wine drinker so I asked him what he was drinking. The rest is history. LOL!

Oh, and how hot is that photo of Robery Downey Jnr? (not really a question. LOL)

Joyce (nikkehsky) @Carmel: Unfortunately, on a bit of a budget as a student, so I can't afford most of the good stuff right now. I got a box of 2006 Strait Jacket on family discount some time ago, though, and that was quite lovely, considering the price. I also have the occasional glass of Capel Vale when we're out and about, but couldn't tell you vintage exactly. I've admittedly come to it a bit late, so still developing preferences!

Shame about the beaches, although judging by the national weather report, not sure it's beach weather anyway!

@Laura: Just the one bottle left in the fridge ;]

@Brenda: I'm curious to see how they'll do under Chris Scott. They seemed to be okay, although the NAB game against the Saints was worrying.
