Lol!

When I got Leo I was told he was a SHE! One of the reasons I got "her". I named her Phobey. She was a cutie and wel behaved.

Took her to the vets where the Mr.Vetman said, "Uh, you should name your cat Phillip or Paul."

My mother and I looked very confused and had to ask "Why?"

Mr.Vetman, "Because that she is certainly a HE!!"

We burst into tears of laughter cause it shocked us so. Then afterwards Phobey got renamed to Leo. He also turned muuuuch naughter as well..LOL

Sally906 | 89 comments OK - have been here for a few weeks now so i guess it is time to venture into all the threads instead of the two or three i have been in :)

My Favourite...
1. Time of Day: Though I am usually up before sunrise most days - my favourite time of day is sunset - preferable as Casuarina beach in the dry with a glass of wine in my hand and hubby at my side :)
2. Food: comfort food - shepherds pie, spag bog, fish and chips etc
3. Drink (alcoholic or non-alcoholic): I like Cai tea and wine, red white or sparkling :)
4. Band/singer: Katherine Jenkins (welsh), Hayley Westenra (NZ)Russell Watson (UK)are all my top faves at the moment
5. Actor: Orlando Bloom (and he's married to an Aussie now so almost one of us!)
6. Spot in Australia: Many spots I love - but if there are hills, snow in winter and wineries near by it is getting to the top of the list!
7. Team/Sport: None really - I like winter sports but not much else
8. Car: My little blue Suzuki Swift
9. Animal: Anything cute and fluffy - right now have a fat beagle - he's not fluffy - but he's cute
10. Activity - reading, socialising, geocaching
11. Things to collect - nothing really - we are pretty minimalistic now the kids have left home

message 426: by Neko (new)

Heehehe...Orlando....mmmmmm~!!

I've wondered about those Swifts..I keep seeing them around the place.....I need a new car it seems...SO what makes the swift so good?

message 427: by Sally906 (new)

Sally906 | 89 comments LOL - sorry i meant Chai tea.

I love my little swift - is our second car, main car is a 4WD - Swifts are reliable, go like a rocket, don't guzzle petrol and can fit my weekly grocery shopping in the boot. As a family car it is probably not so good - but can fit 4 adults in comfortably when we go out.

My Favourite...
1. Time of Day: First thing in the morning, after a good night's sleep, when there are no deadlines so I can write to my heart's content before anyone else wakes up.
2. Food: Everything on the menu at Vini in Sydney. And creme brulee.
3. Drink (alcoholic or non-alcoholic): Bubbles. Preferably Pol Roger but, given my writer's budget, more often than not Yellowglen.
4. Band/singer: Bob Dylan. I saw him at Park Slope in Brooklyn in 2008 and it was one of those times I'll tell my grandchildren about.
5. Actor: Hmm. I think Kevin Spacey is brilliant. And Audrey Tatou is stunning. But Hugh Jackman is my other husband.
6. Spot in Australia: We bought a house in Enmore, in Sydney's Inner West. It's art meets grunge, and youth culture meets old people. There's street art everywhere you go, alongside magnificent Victorian mansions. I love it.
7. Team/Sport: I don't actually follow any sports. But I have been informed in no uncertain terms that I am a Western Bulldogs supporter by marriage.
8. Car: I drive a Toyota of some sort, I couldn't tell you what. The only car I've ever desired was the SAAB (I think) in the ad where the guy in India gets an elephant to sit on his car to match the picture.
9. Animal: I grew up with horses and still love them. Other than that, let's get specific: my dog Oliver and my cat Ruby.
10. Activity: Writing fiction, growing herbs, trying new food with good friends.
11. Things to collect: I can't believe I'm admitting this. I collect snowglobes. I have a slight obsession.

message 434: by [deleted user] (new)

Grant | 30 comments Here are a few of my favourite things.

My Favourite...
1. Time of Day: This can vary, but laying my head on my own pillow after a long day is always a great feeling. My favourite type of day is a slightly drizzly day with fog and mist obscuring the trees in the distance.
2. Food: A medium char grilled steak with just simple seasoning and a salad on the side.
3. Drink (alcoholic or non-alcoholic): I drink a lot of water, but do like the odd orange juice. A cool beer in an icy cold glass is always great on a hot day.

5. Actor: Colby smulders
6. Spot in Australia: Anywhere where there is beautiful running water. I especially love waterfalls and babbling brooks.
7. Team/Sport: Any Aussie team and the NSW blues. Parramatta in the NRL.
8. Car: I've always been a Holden fan but currently drive a ford. loll
9. Animal: I love otters, but domestically, I have 2 cats.
10. Activity: Enjoying good food with good friends.
11. Things to collect: I don't really collect a lot. Although I do hoard any good books I have the pleasure of reading.

Laura, how funny. We called our guinea pig Boofhead because he had such a big boofy hair, not 'cause he was a boofhead. LOL. He was the King Pin guinea pig when the others were alive. He used to boss them about and steal their food and toys, but whenever one of them got sick, he'd snuggle up to them and clean them to comfort them, just like an old mother hen.

He's blind now and eight-years-old. He's so spoilt though and lives in a little wooden house in our lounge room. At the moment, he's on my husband's lap, getting his chin rubbed and being fed a treat of parsley.

How about you cat,Laura? Is he still alive? If so, what's his new name and what's he doing right now?

message 442: by Neko (last edited Apr 29, 2011 05:49AM) (new)

Neko Hahaha.Boss em around but yet snuggled when sick that is so cute!! How many guinea pigs did you originally have? Awee, might be spoilt but sounds like he gets lots of love!! Wow 8 years old but do they a long life? I thought they did. How come he's blind? :(

I love guinea pigs..Used to have one as a child..Was called Corky. He was wonderfully natured, he only ever bit 1 person and that was it. I remember when I'd go into the backyard and he'd make the squeeking noise to say 'hello' so I'd imitate it and he'd squeek even more.

Sadly Corky came to an ugly end :(

On my cat..bit of a funny story..I wanted a kitten and my friends Cat had kittens..My Mum agreed only because Boofhead was a GIRL. We already own an older ginger male called Rusty..Anyways..Her name got changed from boofhead to Phoeby because I thought it was a girl...Then the vet told me, on "her" first vet visit, 'Maybe you should consider calling her Phillip!! Because this kitten is certainly a BOY!' LOL

His name got changed to Leo after that..lol When we thought he was a girl he was so NICE now he's a bit of a monster. He just hissed at my sister twice because he wanted to go outside. He's gotten into a strange habbit of hissing to let us know he wants to go outside.

Carmel, stop at 10? Me? Tee-hee, I was going to keep going. I’m a chatterbox. (My husband’s glad I write now. It gives his ears a rest. LOL.)

I do have the perfect setting to write, and I'm so lucky and appreciative for it. I didn't start writing seriously until I was 53, but then I had to go and learn first. Life was real tough for a few years and my mother used to always say to me, "Every dog has it's day, love."

Well, I didn't know that one day I would be as lucky as I am now - having two beautiful grandkids, living in paradise, having the privilege of caring for beautiful little animals, (though that's sad sometimes), and being able to add all three to my stories. I appreciate it every day and wake up with a smile.

I believe it's true sometimes that good things come back to us if we're kind to others. My luck changed for the better the day I started donating blood. That's the truth.

Laura, guinea pigs can live to the age of ten, but the average age is seven. My other two, both boars died at the age of three, one because of an ignorant vet that didn’t know how to treat guinea pig problems. Now I have a fantastic vet in Crows Nest in Sydney. He’s an Exotics vet who also treat small animals like ferrets, and also snakes and lizards. He studied many more years than most vets and can plane a guinea pigs teeth with the correct equipment. My little guinea pig, Beanie died because an ignorant vet who tried to plane his teeth with a bastard file instead of using proper equipment. He should have told me he didn’t have it, or the knowledge to do it. He took the top of his poor little tongue off, damaged his jaw, and caused permanent nerve damage, and worse, he didn’t even give him any painkillers. I immediately drove 300 kilometres to Sydney, and although he later had two more operations after that, he never recovered and could never eat by himself again. I had to hand feed him crushed and mushed food with a syringe four times a day for two months. (Spent $2.000 on operations and treatment, but In the end, the vet said it was cruel to keep him alive, so I had to let him go. Bless him. He was so sweet. He used to run around the house pop-corning and squeaking for his breakfast. He loved tomato and whenever he could smell it, he’d act like a kid in a lolly shop.

The other one that died was called Teddy. He died even though I took him to a vet and was given medication, but the problem was the same thing. He needed his teeth planed,(He was the first one to die), but I was also at fault for not knowing that. I knew nothing about guinea pigs teeth then. However, I soon learned and had Beani's teeth plained a age two, but the second time it needed doing it was Christmas and the other vet was closed for the week, plus it was 30-0 kilometers away.

That’s funny, Laura, that you thought your cat was a girl. We thought Beanie was a girl at first because he looked like one. With guinea pigs, you cant tell until they are older unless you know how to. I know how to check now, but for months we thought Beanie was a she. And you know why? Because guinea pigs can be bi if they don’t have a female partner, and Boofhead fell in love. LOL. We got Beanie after Teddy died because Boofhead was fretting for his mate. He was in love with Teddy too. LOL.

If anyone want’s to know anything about the care of guinea pigs, there’s plenty of information on the net. GuineaLinx is a fantastic website.

Leo is a great name for a cat, Laura. He sounds like a cat with character. My son has a cat with character, but he’s a big softie that’s scared of mice.

Sorry I rabbited on so long.

Patricia Puddle (trishapuddle) | 86 comments Laura, I just read your profile. I also love coffee and beer. We make home brew, but I can’t drink as much as when I was younger. It makes me dizzy. LOL. Plus then I’d never get anything done.

I see you collect comics and you’re a graphic designer, and have worked on children’s tv shows and done illustrations for business cards. That’s awesome. I also loved comics and drawing. I do my own illustrations in my chapter book, Star-Crossed Rascals. That book was my childhood memories turned into a fictitious children’s book, and there is a scene where Polly makes a rag doll and stuffs it with comics. (Beeno comics was what I stuffed my rag doll, Jenny with. LOL. I had that doll on my bed when I got married and my husband pulled the comics out to read. I wasn’t impressed. Poor Jenny. Also, he kicked her out of our bed, the meanie. )

I have a comic book, Laura, called The Cartoon History of The Universe Volumes 1-7 From the Big Bang to Alexandra the Great by Larry Gonick. It’s a great comic book. Hey, maybe I should give it a five-star review.

Patricia Puddle (trishapuddle) | 86 comments Carmel wrote: "Patricia, guinea pigs are such beautiful creatures. My two daughters had 3 of them over the yrs. One initially, a white one with pink eyes and her name was Sarah, she was a gorgeous thing, my girls..."

Carmel, I agree, guinea pigs are so sweet natured. When my Teddy and Beanie died, my husband and I cried for months. We had a funeral in the garden and they are burried in our rockery under a azalia bush. They were our babies. When we rescued the guinea pigs, we didn't have any grandkids and our kids were in their thirties. But not long after we rescued Boofhead and Teddy, our grandkids came along. (They love Boofhead and remember Beanie.) what did your guinea pig, Sarah, die from? Just curious.

I love rabbits. I had a pet rabbit as a kid, but I lived in England and my mother wouldn't let me keep it in the house. I kept it in the shed, and one really cold night, the poor little thing froze to death.

I hope your rabbit doesn't get that disease. That would be awful. Maybe you could keep it in your bedroom. LOL. Just kidding. I do know someone who has a pet rabbit and keeps it indoors though. It walks around the house like it owns it.

message 447: by Neko (new)

Neko omg omg..Buddy is sooo cuttteee <3!!! I loove rabbits..Duh! Just look at my profile picture..lol Yet I've never owned one because I always have cats. I'd imagine Leo might kill a rabbit if we got one >:(

message 448: by Neko (new)

Neko @Patricia- Ferrets! I want one of those but I was never allowed one since we'd been told they don't exactly have a nice temper..Yet I've now seen/heard people are actually breeding the nasty side out of them. I wonder how true it is.

Anyways..Your current vet sounds like our guy. He's amazing but also a giant...He's nearly 7" and well, he mumbles while talking so it can be hard to understand him at times. But he is good, he actually studied acupuncture for pets plus herbal remedies asaposed to just giving your beloved pet antibiotics.

My gosh I am so sorry you had problems with vets, it amazes me they still do things when they don't know what they are doing, that i think is terrible! It's interesting that you mention their teeth needing to be plained..I can't remember if we ever took corky to the vets for that but my Mum had own guinea pigs as a child so maybe she did something while I wasn't looking (aka taking him to the vets) as I was only very young.

Never knew about guinea pigs being bi :o But i think it's lovely that they can fall in love with whoever! We only had Corky but my friend and I wanted to breed her pet rabbit with my guinea pig..ehehe So, I'm going to say if you get one guinea pig it's probably a good idea to get two so they don't fret over being alone?

Thanks for the website will have to give it a look :)

I gotta say I really like the names of all your guinea pigs!

A cat scared of mice? I wish Leo was..He eats them for a midnight snack. Our next door neighbour throws out all her FOOD from her deck..And so naturally we get mice/rats!! It's terrible but she won't stop it. But this has made a 'killing field' for Leo. Just the other day he caught a rat and I saw him throwing it around the backyard..I had to laugh at how animated Leo was but I suddenly felt very sorry for the rat. He also catches possoms!!! -___- Our vet didn't believe us and it makes other people sick when we tell them..lol It's amazed he hasn't been hurt in all these years.

We started placing bells on him so the possoms and mice/rats would have warning but everytime he'd go outside he'd alaways lose the collar. I think we bought between 8 to 10 before we gave up as it was getting expensive for him to lose them!!

I've yet to get into Home Brew but some day I'd really like to try it out. I've brewed Ginger Beer from scratch. It was interesting experience.

Do you still collect comics? I'd say I've more comics than books! I really love old Disney comics but sadly they usually come with a high price tag :/

I'm currently working on completing my Carl Barks Lib Uncle Scrooge Collection. It's a sllloooww process but I'll get them all some day. But also these comics come with a collectors card SO I want to try and get the card as well (if possible). Also all the ones I've gotten so far haven't been opened :D I can't wait to open them all up and just read.

Trouble with this collection is some people like to sell them at ungodly prices so it's why I have to wait so long. I live on eBay!! lol

I've a few proud comics that i own...I've gotten two copies of a Donald Duck comic which is very rare!! :D I've also got Carl Barks signature on two massive posters.I'm still in shock that I got something with his signature on it.

Oh and if you don't know..Carl Barks is the DUCK MAN! He created Scrooge :)

I also reccently finishing off another collection of comics for the 2nd time. First time my EX ripped up some of the comics! Took years to finish and after that ripping it took a few more years to complete *sigh*

Anyways..haha..I love comics..uh-hu!

And yes it would be wise to rate your own comic 5 stars :D!!
