No air con needed in Sydney right now. We have a beautiful breeze and clouds gathering. I'm sure it will come your way soon.

I like that. Never heard that term before. It's something I suffer from regularly. Okay when I like the song but annoying when I don't.

Dale Harcombe | 6949 comments We exchanged cards for Valentin's day. That's as much as we get into it. Mine was handmade by my DH. His was bought. I'm not crafty. We did get a heart shaped chocolate each when we went to the library. Cute.

message 17578: by Sally906 (new)

Sally906 | 89 comments Hubby and I have happily ignored Valentine's Day for 37 years. I think I would get suspicious if he suddenly bought me flowers!

We don't need a day to know we love each other. My heart goes out to young girls at work as flowers get delivered and they look up hopefully in case it's for them. The girls all discuss what they got, ask each other what they got and it seems to be a battle of whose loved the most - love being how magnificent the gesture is. At least I was spared that today. What I did see was a young lad being dragged into the valentine display at Coles this morning as the young girl he was with gathered flowers, chocolate AND a teddy bear for him to buy her. They were in front of me in the checkout and she was taking a photo of her loot and obviously texting it to her friends. I felt quite sad for them both. That's not love.

Maybe I am just a grumpy old woman. :)

I'm with you Sally. The thought put into my card and the words he wrote on it show the heart of my man. That's love. And it's everyday love not just a fake once a year thing.

No you're not a grumpy old woman Sally. I think many of us, old and young, view the commercialisation of Valentine's Day with disdain. It was a fun thing when you were at school to send/ receive cards but once you're older and in a relationship, it's the quiet, small everyday gestures that count. I feel sorry too for the girl who felt she had to force her boyfriend to buy her gifts to show off to her friends.

My son (21) and his girlfriend went to an anti-Valentine's Day party last night so there's a fair bit of cynicism out there amongst the young .

message 17581: by Dale (new)

Dale Harcombe | 6949 comments On a survey on our local radio station 90 percent said they did not celebrate Valentine's day but bet all the restaurants around were still booked out.

I'm with you on this one, Sally. We tend to ignore the day, because we have the great gift of being able to love each other every day. It just seems as if it's a massive contest fuelled by commercialism. I don't doubt that many couples celebrate it with genuine love, but particularly for the young ones who haven't found 'the one' it can be a bit of a smack in the face if they're the ones 'left out' while their Facebook feeds and snapchats are full of pictures of loot.

Looking forwards to it - hope it is as good as the first. In the first the actors weren't told who dunnit - even the eventual murderer had no idea

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) Ever wonder where the celebration of St Valentine’s Day springs from?

On February 14 around the year 278 A.D., Valentine, a holy priest in Rome in the days of Emperor Claudius II, was executed. Needing soldiers for war campaigns, the Emperor had banned all marriages and engagements in Rome. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. His actions were discovered and he was condemned to death.
