Dale Harcombe | 6949 comments We had a child screaming in the library the other day while his mum and her friends calmly carried on chatting. It didn't seem to occur to her to take him out. Meanwhile us older people had our own thoughts about how we would have handled it. I ended up leaving the library earlier than I wanted because of the noise. Guess I'm getting intolerant in my old age.

message 17502: by Suz (new)

Suz | 4436 comments If you're getting intolerant due to your age then I am too Dale! This is where I can't stand taking my almost three year old Indy - unless it's story time. Even then I think he's the noisiest and most adventurous and I don't leave his sight. It's not a place for toddlers (mine anyway) and I'm hyper vigilant as I know it's not the place. Shame not all agree with me! If he's happy doing craft at the end of story time, for a quick minute I'll scan the shelves behind him and hope something jumps out at me.

Haha! There you go Liam - told you not to start the smacking discussion!! LOL

Glad you told the parent to control or leave - did she leave?

:P I agree though, never hurt me when I was a kid. Just taught me to listen when mum got the Mum VoiceTM going or I was cruising for a bruising.

She did leave a few minutes later, took what she and her kid had grabbed and checked out.

It's fair enough if they're being really bad. Sometimes I get some older customers who think the library is still an absolute silence zone though, and complain.

I was at a joint use library a few weeks ago, and there were two high school girls sitting at a table discussing a project or something, and an old fella came up and complained to me that they weren't basically reading in silence, and when I told him "It's a public space, they're not screaming or being disruptive and loud, I'm sorry", he went and told them off himself and they left. That annoys me, because we're trying to get younger generations into using the library, and he basically just scared two of them off.

Jülie ☼♄  (jlie) | 6581 comments I really feel for you Liam, you are in a position where you can't just walk away..at work..and you are not just referring to one random obnoxious child but probably a succession of them during the course of your working days. Where the Mother can eventually take the child home for a nap, you have no choice or recourse.
It's a Library for goodness sake, not a playground! Same goes for shopping centres and restaurants...bring them back when they can behave.
Forget the rowdy kids, maybe we should start slapping the parents for being so insensitive and careless and for taking it so personally instead of trying to correct it. That's my Rant.

The smacking debate is very topical today with the Perth mother who was arrested for smacking her four year old in a shopping centre

He's old school where you used to whisper in libraries - doesn't realize things have changed dramatically since then! I'd be sorry to see the girls go too; it's great they were utilizing the library for study:)

Wait, WHAT!? It's 100% legal to smack your child with an open hand, in SA at least. I assumed it was a federal law, maybe it differs from state to state. Assuming she wasn't going hammer and tongs on the kid's face or something then that seems hugely wrong.

Yeah occasionally you get parents who are like "OH sorry this is just how he/she is" and I feel like saying "And whose fault is that?"

It is certainly not legal in WA then because she was arrested and could get up to three years in jail. They said she smacked the boy twice on the face:(

Hmm that's borderline then I suppose, I don't think the open hand thing covers face as well. You have to have some level of empathy though, if the kid was screaming and being a little monster and she was on her own trying to get stuff done, she had to be frazzled as all hell. There's a big difference between that and maliciously beating your kid, and the kid isn't gonna remember two slaps an hour later. Seems overly harsh to me.

That guy in QLD the other week that whacked his child over the head in the cafe that was caught on camera didn't get charged (I thought his actions were abuse) so I am thinking that this WA incident must have been worse again.

I have at times given my children a smack on the bum, when I was totally at the end of my tether and then felt bad instantly. No way can I imagine smacking my child's face.

message 17515: by Sally906 (new)

Sally906 | 89 comments I never smacked our children on the face - but I firmly believe that God padded our bottoms for a reason! Smacking was always a last resort in our house but the girls have been marched out of many venues for bad behaviour. Would never let them muck around and disturb people.

I certainly don't think people should bounce their children off walls but there has to be consequences for poor behaviour.

message 17516: by Brenda, Aussie Authors Queen (new)

Brenda | 80174 comments Mod
I agree Sally - discipline is necessary... and some kids need more than mere words. There's a difference between "child abuse" (slapping around the head) and "discipline" (smacking the bottom or legs) IMHO!

My dad had a strap which he kept rolled up on the corner of the table - all he had to do was hit it on the table edge and we would be "perfect" once again:)

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) Oh, the much debated smacking! My niece tells me it is illegal to smack a child in Vic. My g-niece is super cue but is not an angel all the time. A smack would not go astray! On the behind, never the face/head or even the legs, in my opinion. My mum chased us with the wooden spoon and it never hurt us.

Mummy read!', and he passes me two books, firstly It and then Streets on a Map: Journey Through Changes. How different can you get?!
