Agree with you, Dale. From October onwards, where I live gets really busy with holiday-makers. I've learned the trick to avoiding them is to go out really early.

message 15702: by Dale (new)

Dale Harcombe | 6957 comments Glad the damage wasn't worse and you didn't lose power and lose the air con, Brenda and Michael. We had a little thunder, a little rain and that was it. Cooled down though.
Like Bette if I want shopping I go out early at Holiday time mostly but sometimes the need for a coffee takes precedence. And if it wasn't for our tourists and holiday makers we probably would'nt have the coffee shops and facilities we have.

message 15703: by B the BookAddict (new)

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) We've just had scary bullwhip cracks and huge rolls of thunder here, followed by some much needed rain. If I wasn't awake before, I most certainly am now!

Leonie (leonierogers) | 3569 comments We finally had a few drops of rain late last night, but no thunder or lightning. Have just put the sprinklers on to give the grass a drink and fill up the bird bath.

Bracing ourselves for another 40 degree day.

We're in Muswellbrook in the Upper Hunter Bette - beautiful in spring (usually) and winter and autumn, but this persistent heat this early in the season is drying everything out and the place looks very tired now. The jacaranda lined streets are trying hard, and the purple is still beautiful, but it's a slap in the face beginning to the summer!

Our poor farmers are desperate as you can probably imagine.

Wish you could get that much needed rain Leonie! Drought in your area has been long....

We have 38c estimated for today (went up from 28c!) and it feels like that already!! Just got home from grocery shopping and boy, it's hot outside already!!

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) Mine renews automatically I think :D I would like to change seat but it seems like an absolute faff to do so.

Also saw Guardians of the Galaxy for the first time the other night. That soundtrack is fantastic.

Margaret Sharp (margaretlynettesharp) | 1215 comments I'm making progress with driving. This morning, after some easy streets, I navigated around some particularly tricky traffic tamers, went under a very narrow railway bridge, through a busy roundabout, over a one-lane bridge, onto a main road, and turned at the traffic lights to start going home. :)

Sorry - I love storms.

Apparently all the big systems which are making you southeners hot are pushing the rains away from us - so turn your temperatures down right now you mob - you hear me? ;)

message 15727: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 3569 comments I have been to 2 very interesting Meet the Author events in the last week!

Last Thursday, I went to see Zane Hacker, author of Antarctic Sundays: a cooking adventure in a remarkable place - he has published a lovely book that is a combination photo book, cook book and travelogue of his time working in Antarctica as a chef (amongst other responsibilities which included acting as coroner and assisting with anaesthesia if required!). He had some very interesting stories to tell! He is going anywhere and everywhere promoting his book - he seems quite keen to go to little outback towns as well, which is great. He is heading back to the Antarctic for a couple of months in a few days, but I think he intends to continue his book promotion when he returns next year.

And tonight I went to hear Cynthia Harrod-Eagles speak. I haven't read any of her books (which is rather embarrassing as she has written over 70 books!!) but am keen to read some now. She was such an engaging speaker - if anyone has the opportunity to hear her speak (I believe she is going to Sydney and Melbourne next), I would highly recommend it. She is starting a new series set in England in WWI to coincide with the 100th anniversary, the first is called Goodbye Piccadilly and is now released and set in 1914, the 2nd will be released in 2015 and set in 1915 and so on. I'm tempted to start this series, or her Bill Slider series (first is Orchestrated Death A Mystery Introducing Inspector Bill Slider), or her Kirov Saga (first is Anna)...

Veronica ⭐️ | 2387 comments Cynthia Harrodsburg-Eagles books sound great. I haven't come across them yet either. I will have to have a look where she will be speaking in Sydney.

Tonight I saw Robin Hobb had a bit of a fangirl moment. She signed a few of my books and gave me a Dragon pen.

Sadly, yes! I could do with a little sleep-in - what, with a on-the-go 2yr old staying but that's not happening. Tired grand aunt here:)

I've been teaching her that silly Hokey Pokey song. Always ends with both of us giggling stupidly and me faintly dizzy from doing the 'and then you turn around' part!

Kathryn | 3569 comments Thanks, Brenda. For some reason, I don't really consider this sports news so I didn't even think of looking there! Probably because I don't follow cricket, so to me it's just an awful accident that led to the death of a young man...
