Paul (pbuzz) | 101 comments My brother and his wife just returned from a cruse. They returned earlier this week, the following afternoon, he went into hospital and the following morning, had his toe amputated. I was shocked. Of course, I visited him and he is good spirits but I walk away in a semi-state of bewilderment while think; how fragile our bodies are and how quickly things all too often seem to go wrong. (Some times, I indeed struggle with the crappy things that seem to happen on an all-too frequent basis). (:I

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) @Zoey, I'm another one who could easily move to Tassie for the summer.

@Everyone Can you believe how hot it is already and only November? I'm like Brenda and loathe the heat. 25C is tops for me, anything over that and I hate it.
28C expected in south-west coastal Victoria today.

@Paul It is alarming how rapidly our bodies can fail us:(

Good morning, EB's!

That is so very very true and and sometimes it also seems so very difficult to reduce how I feel into word; but oddly enough, I also feel a great need to do so. It's just a paradox.

Looks like a summer house for Aussie Readers in Tasmania is in order ;) Wouldn't that be fun!

The cool change arrived somewhere in the middle of the night; my restless sleep was broken around 2.30 by a young couple leaving a (relatively quiet) party when they decided to have an argument..which of course escalated into shouting!

That looks amazing; a bit like a blend of frontier American with a subtle Tudor styled undertone. In a colder moist climate, this could work well.

Sally906 | 89 comments I got an owwie :(

Steamed veggies in the microwave and as I lifted the bowl the gladwrap split and covered my thumb in boiling steam.

It is SO sore! Have taken an Asprin and have a cup of iced water with thumb cooling off in it!

Do you have any burn cream? After you take it out of the iced water you should keep it moist - even savlon would help if you have some...

K | 1143 comments Well, really, our proper dream is to live in the UK for a few years on an ancestry visa (my husband's grandmother was born in Maidston, Kent, so he is eligible). Tassie is our second dream place with Victoria coming in third. :P just somewhere on he cusp of the country and city where I can have all the animals I want. I can be a country girl again, but Allan can still have some of the creature comforts of the city. That's our dream.

Sally, Aloe Vera 100'/. Gel from supermakets or chemist...magic! It dries on the wounded area like a thin skin and is very effective pain relief.
*Also, I agree with Faye that you shouldn't do housework..or anything else..except "read", until it mends! ;) hope its not too sore...steam burns are the worst.

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) Hi Sally:)

I use Solosite Wound Gel 50g Tube for burns. Last year, I was cleaning the Sandwich Maker when it was still hot. The lid slammed shut on my knuckles and I got 2nd degree burns there. Doctor told me about Solosite; it's magic - cooling, gel so not sticky, has a sort of anaesthestic(??) stuff in it which soothes the pain.

Hoping your thumb heals quickly but recommend complete rest and only Reading Is Allowed until healed.

message 15645: by Marianne (new)

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9989 comments My advice for FIRST aid for a burn is keeping the affected part in COLD water for as long as you can, hours if possible, before applying anything. (Of course, this is often not practical!) After the burn has happened, the heat of it is still damaging tissue so cold water (but NOT ICE against the burn, as this can damage too) helps to prevent further damage to tissue. I know of a lass with a very bad scald to her hand who kept it in cold water overnight, refreshing it when the chill went off it, and it did not blister or scar.
And reading while healing is proven to speed that up.... trust me, I'm a pharmacist.

LOL @ Marianne

I had my thumb in iced water for about 5 hours last night only applied the cream when I went to bed.

Is a bit swollen this morning and stiff but not as agonising as it was last night and is not burning anymore. My hubby is the one who has the silly accidents not me!

I certainly did the reading.

I'd second reading to take the mind of pain as well. (I'm a physio...)

As far as stuff goes, well at 11.30am today it was 40.3 and still rising. Will be hiding inside reading, writing and folding the washing I think. Or maybe hibernating until summer's over.
