Using hubby as the guinea pig. My daughter had shingles when she was 12 the doctor said it was worst case he had seen. She was sick for 5 weeks.

I've never heard of that either Sally. Sounds like a good idea. My grandmother used to get shingles on her back and she said it's the most agonising pain ever and she was a migraine sufferer.

Wish I'd known about that three years ago! Shingles lingered for nearly a year, miserable experience.

I didn't know you were a quilter Bette. I have made a dozen big full sized quilts for various family members and multiple babies ones. I piece by hand in front of the TV and do simple machine quilting so only manage 2-3 per year. It's a very relaxing hobby and something I hope I'll have more time for when I retire :)

I have a cupboard full of gorgeous fabrics for all the future quilts I plan to make - going into a fabric shop is a bit like going into a bookshop for me and I have to stay away from the on-line sites!

Any other quilters/sewers out there?

Jülie ☼♄  (jlie) | 6581 comments I leave the quilting to my sister Carolyn but I know what you mean about fabric shops being like book shops...I can't help myself either and end up buying loads of fabrics just because I love the look of them!
I have this picture in my head of beautiful quilted book holders/covers...you know the ones that you put your book in like a sleeve, to take out with you?
So if anyone is into making those to sell I would love to see some :D
My fantasy cover is made from beautiful oriental patterns :))

That does sound gorgeous! A pattern wouldn't be hard and there are some lovely oriental fabrics available. Maybe you could get your sister onto it. Would make a great Chrissie present!

Sally906 | 90 comments The shingles vaccine only became available this year. I don't think it is covered by Medicare. the vaccine cost us over $200 at the cheap chemist (doc wrote a script chemist ordered it in then we took it to clinic nurse to do it).

It is a one time only vaccine and you are only promised to reduce the risk of getting shingles by 50% and then if you are in the 50% that does get the symptoms are less severe.

It really was lovely meeting you Kathryn and thanks so much for driving all the way to the Gold Coast and especially for being so understanding with all the change of plans due to all my little dramas!!! The weather was certainly perfect. Every day was sunny and warm. I thought after you'd left that we didn't even go to the beach or take a photo together!!!! Never mind. Hopefully you can come down to Melbourne some time in the not too distant future and we can pick up where we left off.

Yes, I'm a quilter, hand and machine. I started in 2006, joined a fantastic sewing group held at friend's patchwork shop. I have about 7k worth of fabric but lord knows when I'll ever get through it because I keep buying more. I love Moda fabric best. Until this year, I made 7-8 quilts annually but reading has interrupted that this year and I've only made 4 so far. And I moved back to Melb and so have lost my wonderful quilting group; none around where I live now:( I make 2 or 3 usually for myself in flannel because I adore the soft, snuggly feel; good to wrap up in, in winter.

Quilters are always lovely people, just like readers:)

Quilters are lovely people Bette. I don't belong to a group but I've done quite a few workshops over the years at a local patchwork shop and everyone is always so friendly and helpful. Reading competes with my sewing too but I've started listening to audiobooks and that works well.

Same here Mary, but I reluctantly put my book down to spend half the day in the garden and am so glad as it is a beautiful day and I got lots of planting and trimming and weeding done...now sitting back with a cuppa and my book :D

I only realised last year that he wrote that. I also hadn't realised he wrote Under the Dome which intrigues me (although I didn't watch the TV series), but, as usual, I'm a bit daunted by the size! Maybe one of these days...

I agree Marianne. The Green Mile was the first book of his I read, after seeing the movie and realising there WAS a book!!! I've only read 3 of his books but my all time favourite and not horror is 11/22/63. That was amazing!!! I do want to read some more of his but I don't think I can do the horror ones.

message 14091: by Marianne (new)

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9990 comments One of my faves was Insomnia which I don't recall having a lot of horror, also Bag of Bones and Dreamcatcher although they may have had some. A while since I read them......I loved Lisey's Story but I seem to recall some gory bits, though what I remember most was crying a lot. Going to buy Mr. Mercedes soon...

message 14095: by Mark (new)

Mark Stephen King writes "page-turners," and inasmuch as he fails to induce boredom so intense in the reader that he or she wants to leap from a building, he is regarded by the Keepers of the Flame of Relentless Tedium and Postmodern Narrative Vacuity as not a "writer," and hence unworthy of consideration for, e.g, the Pulitzer or the "Man, was that a Booker a Steaming Pile of feculence" Award. I kind of like King, no matter in what genre he writes. I think "Phil," in message #87 of the comments thread for this review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show... ...pretty much captures the prevailing attitude of the litcriterati to perfection. Sorry for the diatribe, but I'm under the weather and cranky. :)

I am sure that plenty of us agree that just because it's not Capital L Literature, doesn't mean it's not good!

message 14097: by Mark (new)

Mark Marianne wrote: I am sure that plenty of us agree that just because it's not Capital L Literature, doesn't mean it's not good! ""

I am sure you're right: that most readers read what they enjoy without slavish deference to the opinions of the postmodernist literary critical establishment. I think too, though, that King gets a bad rap. By any reasonable standard of quality, works like "The Dark Tower" series and "The Shawshank Redemption" would have to qualify as "Capital L Literature" (if such a distinction could even reasonably be made).
