Sally906 | 90 comments We have lapwings up here. Nasty savage little critters and are breeding right now. If you go too close they come after you. I run back at them flapping my arms and growling loudly which seems to flummox them somewhat. My grandson is terrified of them but I had him in fits of laughter when I did my growl at the bad birds routine. :)

Kathryn | 3569 comments I met up with Elaine today. She has left the chilly Melbourne weather to come up to Queensland to enjoy our lovely (at the moment, anyway - ask me if it's lovely in a month or two and I might have a different descriptor) sun, sand and surf. We had a nice morning tea and lunch, talked about books (of course!), and "...shoes - and ships - and sealing wax..." - or perhaps not! But we talked about lots of different things and had a great day!

Aren't they what used to be called Plovers? I see them sometimes on the river-bank.

I don't think we have Lapwings in Canberra. Had to look them up to find out what they were. We do a lot of birdwatching from our house, counted 16 varieties in our back garden one day - but no lapwings. They sound rather unpleasant.

Hello Margaret, long time no see (or hear or write or ... whatever). I've been "away" for awhile. Nice to see a familiar face!

message 14009: by Vicki (new)

Vicki Tyley (vickityley) | 1732 comments The lapwings are only protecting their best. They're fearless and will even take on a helicopter. When Alan worked at the hospital, they used to mow around the nest near the helipad. :)

Valerie. I think the grey ones are actually native mynahs and the brown ones are the 'imports' and called noisy mynahs.

message 14016: by Marianne (new)

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9990 comments Not sure about the noisy title (though they definitely are noisy!) but the imports are Indian Mynahs, my hubby calls them rats with wings.

I'd forgotten the name; thanks:) My m-i-l called them rats with wings too.

Google to the rescue! Common Indian Myna is a medium sized chocolate brown bird. The Noisy Miner is a medium size grey bird; it is an Aust Native Bird.

message 14018: by Valerie (new)

Valerie (nicehotcupoftea) | 838 comments Ok! I don't like either. The grey ones are so aggressive.
Once we had two Indian mynahs come down our rangehood and we had to open it up to let them out. It was really weird to see orange feet in there!

Yikes! Canberra had a serious problem with the Indian Myna birds a few years ago (they were chasing off the native birds) and did some sort of culling program. It took a couple of years but gradually our garden filled with our beautiful native birds again. Lovely - except for the Sulphur Crested Cockatoos. They are gorgeous to look at, but SOOOOOO destructive! And the noise!

Oh, I wholeheartedly agree! They will chew up anything: washing lines, verandah poles and also a bite out of each orange/lemon hanging on the tree. Nice to look at, as you say, but...

It was fun and funny. I have to follow the threads or ask your help posting pics. My son looks so happy with Andy, such a nice open guy.. but I think I almost caused a riot by assisting an elderly couple to get their copy signed for their grand daughter, some bystanders weren't happy but I'm glad I could help.
