Am in Wagga and it was our daughter's 21st birthday yesterday. She lives on campus in a college, and one of her friends delivered specially made pancakes last night. They are all the colours of the rainbow (vividly so) but they were very nice for brekkie, although I'm wondering about the side effects of all those colours!

Haha!! I'd say none as it was probably just food dye. I remember years ago in Canberra when the kids were young. We followed the Canberra Raiders way back then and their colours are/were green. The bread was green, the sausages were green - the sausage sizzle on the day of the grand final was INTERESTING to say the least!! No side effects though:)

Leonie (leonierogers) | 3569 comments Yes! We used to make coloured sandwiches for our kids on sports carnival days when we lived in WA. It was sort of a 'thing' there and everyone enjoyed it. Kids ate all kinds of funny coloured sandwiches.

Sadly, when we moved to the Upper Hunter, the kids here thought our kids were just weird when they turned up with yellow bread on carnival day. I think we only did it the once, because of the unfortunate social consequences of being different and in a new school (even if you'd been there for six months.)

message 13805: by Carolyn (new)

Carolyn | 9871 comments I'm curious about how you coloured the bread Leonie? Was it home baked with food dye or shop bought and then coloured?

My kids went to school in NSW and the tradition at their school was to spray dye their hair in team colours. Mine were both in Green team - Gorgeous!

message 13806: by Leonie (new)

Leonie (leonierogers) | 3569 comments We home baked it with food dye added to it right at the beginning. The crust tends to look really weird, but the interior is always the right colour. Our kids' school in WA had red and blue as the school colours, so for inter school sports they had a slice of each in each sandwich :)

Good morning, Julie and EBs.

Sorry, I've been AWOL -- we unplugged and escaped up the mountain (Samaria) for a few days of camping. Cold, moonlit nights and gorgeous sunny days with lots of reading. We didn't see another person/vehicle for three days. An elderly female wallaby with cataracts turned up on our second day. She couldn't see much and instead sniffed out apple and carrot we proffered her. I don't like her chances of survival. Sometimes I hate nature.

Ah, one day not too many years away I won't need to catch that bus and I'll be able to enjoy early morning walks instead and linger to watch the birds!

The one part of my trip into work that I'll miss is crossing the Harbour bridge everyday on the train. I still enjoy the view and on days like this the harbour positively sparkles.

No way Michael!!! Is this for real? I'm just looking at some of my books that are 1000 pages long and can't even begin to comprehend what one million would be like. It's not possible is it?

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) Roughly 4000 pages, thereabouts. The industry average for words/page is 250 for standard paperback.

Oh right... of course...I miss read that but still that would be massive. Do you think anyone will actually want to read it? I know I struggle with about 1000 pages, couldn't imagine reading over 4000 pages in one hit.

message 13831: by Leonie (new)

Leonie (leonierogers) | 3569 comments I just imagined trying to work on the second draft and nearly fainted! I was thinking about how many files/folders/deleted scenes/lists/character snapshots/chapters - you name it - there are to remember and make sure it all works.

It's hard enough when you only write around 130,000 words, let alone 8 or nine times as many in one volume!

And while I'm completely happy to read 1000 page novels (Brandon Sanderson), they're quite big enough to cart around as they are - thank heavens for eReaders.

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) I've just fed six magpies some mince on my back lawn. They have rewarded me by all chortling at the same time; god, I love that sound. Tosca (the devil cat) is inside the back door smacking her lips together. Moses (the boxer) is beside me hoping I'll drop some mince his way. He's sitting there shaking; such a wussy boy! Scared of a few birds! lol!

Carolyn | 9871 comments Must be spring with all these birds around. I have a garden full of very noisy rainbow lorikeets. I don't know if it's the earlier rain or the street plantings of bottlebrush that has brought so many into the garden but they're sure making a (nice) racket!

Such an iconic Australian sound. Mince? They'll love you forever, Bette. :)

We have two battalions of magpies warring over an invisible boundary. Both sides are sitting on eggs, so they're grateful for any easy pickings. "Little One", as we named her when her mum abandoned her on our doorstep, is now a mum herself. And a much better mother than her own ever was.

We have an oak tree at the end of our garden, which is home to loads and loads of squirrels. About the only thing that the cat and dog agree on, is the fact that they want to catch a squirrel. The cat in particular has spent years trying to get one, frequently coming home with bits of fur gouged out because he gets his ass kicked every time. But, he just can't accept defeat and will keep going back for more.
