Oh no, Jess! :( On the bright side, it's almost the weekend, so hopefully you have Saturday or Sunday off to make up for it!

Dale Harcombe | 6949 comments Pretty scary around our way on Tuesday with fires. Friends of ours were evacuated and have been allowed back yesterday. So pleased to see that cooler change come in later in the evening but expected hot temps again tody so hope they have backburnt enough in the meantime that it doesn't flare again.

Oh, Dale that is frightening. Hope that was the last of it and you guys are okay. It's going to be one of those summers. We were driving to Geelong yesterday and noticed what we thought was a dust storm but I found out later , when I looked on the CFA website, there was an actual fire in Lara. Scary!! I keep thinking that if I just ignore the threat it won't happen to us but that's just denial, I think.

Elaine | 2001 comments Zoey wrote: "Woke up to lovely rain, hope they are getting it where the fires are"

That's a relief Zoey. Were you under threat where you are? I have a friend who lives in Hobart, not sure where exactly, but I haven't been able to find out if they were affected. I'm assuming no news is good news.

message 7461: by [deleted user] (new)

An interesting article on the increasing heat (posted by one of my mods in my Green group--yep, you knew I was a Greenie didn't you. :))
http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/...

Our politicians may think discussing climate change, and how it's going to affect us all, doesn't bring in the voters, but I think they are a bunch of recalcitrant tossers. (Yes, I used Keating's word, IMO, we haven't had a good labour leader since he left!)

We are the ones burning or melting!

message 7462: by [deleted user] (new)

Hobart is fine, Elaine. I live an hour south. Must have been impossible to breathe during the fires though!

Thanks for asking. We are fine. It's just the closest we have ever been to bush fire area.We had our bags packed in case but never had to evacuate.Had the radio on all the time for updates.Friends were right in the fire area but home all safe.Thankfully no lives or homes lost. Just lots of bush burnt out.Black leaves in the water while swimming at the beach this morning

I'm so glad you're okay Dale. I can't even imagine what it would feel like being that close to danger and having to be on egde like that. And to actually see physical evidence of it. It's awful here in Melbourne today...windy and hot but thankfully everything seems to be okay.

Elaine | 2001 comments Had to leave home yesterday due to the fire at Kangaroo Ground,Vic, which is 1.5 kms away from us and of course even less in the path of a fire!!! It was our first experience of fire threat and I must say I just wasn't prepared at all!!! All good now fire has been contained. So scary. Hope all of you in NSW and other parts of Victoria are safe and taking care.

Yes, it's been very hot! It has cooled a fair bit, (29 out there now) and there is thunder rumbling in the distance, so hopefully we'll get lots of rain. It's supposed to be 29 tomorrow, so that will be lovely:) Glad you had nice weather today Michael:)

At any given moment, 73% of all known readers in the world are actually reading something by Diana Gabaldon, so it's not a large coincidence. :)

Tracey Alley (traceya) | 485 comments Hey everyone,
It's nearly 6PM and temps are still in the high 30's - which I know is a breeze compared to what some of you are suffering but I'm not good in the heat. I've started getting migraines again because of the intense heat - my poor hubby has been wonderful, bringing me cold cloths and making sure I have the fans on me at all times plus the air-con of course but I still feel awfully sick with all this heat.

Sorry to whine - just having a bad day - I'll be better tomorrow :)

Poor Tracey...it's horrible isn't it:( I feel for you..migranes are so bad, and when you're getting them because of the heat, you pretty much know they won't let go! Hope you're feeling much better tomorrow:)

The cinema is a great place to go when it is hot. The air conditioning is really good! I just got back from seeing Hitchcock. It was excellent, particularly if you are familiar with Psycho.

Have you read the book that film is based on? Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho

Faye (lastchapter) | 409 comments Cooler here today with a nice breeze, I was home alone, everyone is out and about, so I took myself off to the pictures - saw "Life of Pi" had read the books a few years ago. Movie was great, I really enjoyed it. Has anyone else seen the movie?

message 7491: by Tracey (new)

Tracey Alley (traceya) | 485 comments Thanks Brenda and Michael for your sympathy - I hate being a whiner but I was feeling awful at the time. I do have Imigram tablets which can often stop a migraine before it takes hold but you only have a small window of time in which to take the pill for it to be effective and even then it only works about 70% of the time. I, too have found Panadeine Forte to be quite effective but I try not to take too many painkillers when I'm having a bout of migraines as my history has shown they seem to come in clusters for a period of time and then go away - right now I believe it's the heat triggering my migraines and there's little I can do about that. At least I have Robbie to take care of me :)

I am looking forward to seeing 'Hitchcock' - I read Robert Bloch's Psycho for the first time many years ago, long before I saw Hitchcock's adaptation and it's one of those very rare times when I felt that the movie actually did justice to the book - although, having said that I still love to read the book :)

Ian Stewart (goodreadercomIanStewart) | 213 comments I hope this cool air and rain (rain!) that we are experiencing in Sydney makes its way up the coast to those of you still suffering from the crazy heat wave we have been having.

Like the garden of Michael (in Adelaide) my "lawn" - parched to brown dust (almost) by the earlier 40 plus heat - will be perking up. I should have done some watering before the sun's scorched earth policy.

★ Jess | 3071 comments Ive seen Life of Pi and really enjoyed it. I loved the book and it translated surprisingly well to the screen. Even if the plot-for some absurd reason-bores you, it is visually stunning. The effects and cinematography are fantastic. See it.

Hitchcock looks quite good, but I've heard it doesnt live up to the potential it has.

Ive also seen Les Mis, and would highly recommend it :)

Hitchcock is probably best enjoyed by older people! There are many nods to the past - for example Hitchcock comes out and introduces the movie like he used to do for his TV programs. They also play the theme music to that show. And you have to be familiar with Psycho.

I get them too, Tracey. I find Ibrofen works, but as you say, only if I take them in time. Lemon balm or lemon grass tea can help a little. Good luck! Hope they go away quickly. :)
