No worries mate, I know a big percentage of Americans are outraged especially by the latest atrocity, this one did get to me & I just had to voice my feelings, I think we would have trouble imposing our gun laws over there eh! mate...(-:

I've also sent my poem to the White House, got great doubts it will achieve anything but I thought "what the heck"

Have a great Christmas Mark, we are off to be with our Daughter & 2 grand Daughters tomorrow....(-:

You, too, David. Have a Great Christmas! (With respect to the White House, I think Obama is emotionally on your side, but probably feels that, strategically, he can't win, and he has bigger battles to wage that require all his political capital. So he'd probably like the poem, but it wouldn't affect his political calculations .)

Thank you Mark, that is along the same lines I was thinking...Aveagoodone Mate...(-:

BTW I grew up with guns & my mother had a very strict rule that my Father & uncles had to adhere to, they were.....pistols & amunition had to be pad-locked in a steel ammo box & the pistol's firing pins removed, in the same box had to go any rifle bolts so the rifles were rendered unusable, I have no quarms with firearms used in certain situations but can't see any reason why the average Joe needs a firearm in the burbs....(-:

message 7258: by Tracey (new)

Tracey Alley (traceya) | 485 comments Mark, your comments regarding the current, and growing, state of extremism in the US are deeply saddening. I have several nieces and nephews, ranging in age from 7 months through to their early 30's, and when I look at the direction the world, not only the US, is taking it is almost enough to break my heart. To think these precious innocent souls will have to grow up navigating a world full of bigotry, hatred and sheer danger of simply being in the wrong place at the wrong time makes me shudder. Perhaps in the end all any of us can do is pray [if you're so inclined] and try to make your own corner of the world a safe and pleasant environment.

Michael, I just bought that for my son for Christmas...it's not made anymore, and no-one in Australia stocks it. I got my cover from Amazon... http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004...

I don't have a light cover, but my son said he'd love it, so that's how I found out...Dick Smith told me about it not being made anymore...

Mark Tracey wrote: "Mark, your comments regarding the current, and growing, state of extremism in the US are deeply saddening. I have several nieces and nephews, ranging in age from 7 months through to their early 30..."

Thanks, Tracey. Since the US has become, to a large degree, a "truth-free zone," and since we *are* the epicenter of this cancer, I think that it is necessary, at the very least, to bear witness. To say what is happening here but that is outside the realm of acceptable political discourse, here, because there is a virulent lunacy driving my country into extremities of fascism that cannot be addressed within the corporate-controlled American media, and it is a pathology that must ultimately endanger Australia and Europe and all of the civilized world. Because of deranged and intransigent Randian fundamentalists who now have control of the Republican Party, in just one week, the entire world economy may be driven into another round of convulsive reactions and a deeper recession. To attempt to avert this, Obama has even gone so far as to put the heads of seniors, prospectively, on the chopping block to satisfy right-wing Schadenfreude (and I *hope* this was only part of strategic Kabuki theatre), but there is no action sufficiently injurious of the poor or adequately societally pernicious to sate the thirst for blood of the members of the ultra-right, and so they walked away.

I *am* inclined to "pray," since there really *is* no other remedy that looms on the horizon, and I am, personally, a Quaker (as a necessary affirmation of my utter rejection of violence and social injustice). But I think we need more than prayer. Perhaps all that will help is a world unified against the intractable lunacy of the political dynamic in my "homeland." It's a Rovian word I'm loath to use. I had never heard it in the United States prior to the creation of "Homeland Security" by the Bush administration, and it is, I believe, merely a direct translation of "Vaterland," so I think it has *long* been clear in what direction the kakistocrats who control this nation have been moving. Obama is the last firewall, and he is, at best, fighting a holding action.

Title pages etc & the 1st 36 pages again, then jumped to page 85. So I am missing pages 37 to 84. They havent been ripped out, just not there. Not Happy Jan!!! Good job it was a 2nd hand that only cost me $3. But still, how annoying. Think I will have to go to the library to make sure I haven't missed anything important.

What's worse is that the original owner must have given it to the charity shop or second-hand book shop knowing that those pages were missing! How rotten!

message 7280: by Zoey (new)

Zoey (rozannen) | 1045 comments Yes I thought it was a bit rude of the person to do that as well. I bought it from a big 2nd hand book sale we have here once a year, but going by the couple of marks on the book, I would say it has been to at least 2 other 2nd hand places before that, so it was more than one person that got the book, got annoyed (understandably) but then fobbed it off onto someone else. But never mind, went to the library to day & borrowed the book so I can catch up on my missing 47 pages

message 7282: by Tracey (new)

Tracey Alley (traceya) | 485 comments It's so annoying to find those kind of mistakes in books - I remember one book I was really enjoying and then in the middle of one of the pages [I can't remember the exact number but it was close to the middle of the book] it jumped backwards for a chapter or two in mid-sentence before resuming at a later stage with pages missing - I threw the silly thing in the trash and borrowed a copy from the library [after checking it didn't have the same editing mistake].

It certainly shouldn't happen Tracey, and you did the best thing...it's the only place it belongs! But if I had a new copy, I'd take it back to the shop of purchase! Second hand shops are harder to deal with though:(

Perhaps it was one of those annoying, postmodern writing gimmicks, or a form of "magical realism" whereby the chapter magically left the book. If this starts to affect audiobooks, we'll have narrators who suddenly start reading chapters backwards chapters reading start suddenly who narrators have we'll.
