We're about an hour south of Hobart. Still 28 degrees in the house, close to 11pm. Not sure about outside, probably cooler. I agree, Zoey, 34 is hot enough! In fact anything over 25 is just excess heat to me.
45 Michael, horribly hot. We hit 49 degrees several days in a row at Froggy Bottom, near Cobargo NSW, in the same year as those terrible Victorian bush fires. It was the year we decided to move as far south as we could.:)

Smelt the smoke during the night, woke up to red sunrise and very smoky skies. Poor people who have lost their homes. :(:(:(

45 is horrible Michael!!! We are due for your weather on Tuesday:(

We are, thanks, Brenda. We are still well south of the fires. I'm feeling a bit teary. Hate bush fires. So many people and animals affected by these ones. This a facebook page for those who wish to help people who have lost everything in the fires:

Thanks for the link Gina:) So glad you guys are ok..Bushfires are so frightening. Hope it doesn't get any worse.

I'm glad to hear you're safe Gina but I can imagine how you must be feeling. It's horrible to think of all those who will/have been affected by bushfires - this is a beautiful but quite deadly country at times. I'll be praying for rapid relief for all who are suffering.
Thanks, Brenda and Tracey. :) The smoke is getting worse. I can't see some of the mountains around us at all anymore. I think the fires are still out of control. Huge amounts of people still stranded. You are so right Tracey, beautiful but deadly, is a good description of Australia.

Be safe Gina, and take care..xx

Thanks, Brenda. Smoke is getting more intense. Apparently there is a fire just out of Cygnet (which is where we are) and one in Geeveston too. Not much info on the fire site or ABC about those, except that no warning is in place. Not sure I believe them, due to the thickness of the smoke.
A friend is just going to go for a drive to see if he can get more of an idea of how bad the Cygnet fire is, as we don't like the look of it. If this smoke is just coming down from the northern fires, I don't know how people in Hobart and surrounds can even breathe. It's scary not knowing. We have a fire plan in place, which involves letting all the animals out of their yards, grabbing the dogs, and the kids, dogs and us heading down to our bottom dam (which is very, very big).

Fires now also up near Launceston and Devonport, although they are non-alert. I think they have put out the Geeveston one. No more news about the Cygnet one, other than it being a non-alert vegetation fire. I heard someone say that the fires they were facing were moving at 100mph! Impossible to out run. The Bincheno fire is 4000 hectares, burning out of control. :(:(
Here's the fireys' map:

I seriously hate summer. :(
I still can't see Mt Cygnet. My son has packed his Ningajo (Lego), just in case. He says it's not because he's attached to it, but because he worried about the 'toxic air' it would give off if it burnt (he's eight, and very gorgeous).

Thanks, Brenda and Missa. Very glad your friends are ok too! Yes, T'Boy is gorgeous. :) There are fires still raging but the conditions are so much better now, cool change, and the winds have dropped off. Now they are searching for the missing people.
I've been hearing stories, including good ones, such as a dog, who was tied up at a pier on the Tasman peninsula (obviously his poor owners did not have the option of taking him with them when they fled), who has been found safe and sound and returned to them.
Hoping all the missing people will be accounted for, and people can start moving forward. Everyone has been quick to help one another and I am once again, incredibly proud of Australian fire fighters.

So glad you're ok Gina!!! I see where two people have been found safe and well; their families were looking for them:)
Good news! Hoping to hear more of it! We really need the rain. It's all so bone dry. I won't relax my guard until all the fires are out, especially the one down the road, which is apparently being patrolled. It feels like the worst is over though, but that could have something to do with the cooler weather. On that 41 degree day, with the wind roaring, and smoke filling the air, it was very scary. People were saying the conditions were exactly like in 67. We are now going to instal sprinklers on the roof. It's like snake bandages, you don't miss them until you need them, and when you do, you curse yourself for not being prepared! (Yes, I now have lots of snake bandages!)
Sounds good Gina! I hope you don't get bad conditions back...we are forecast for extreme heat Tuesday..mid 40s they're talking:( Hope like mad we get no fires. I'm like you, and the rest of the country I think...we desperately need rain!
The last ever Merlin (BBC) episode finished 30mins ago! I already miss it. But at least I can go back and watch it from the start! :)

No rain on the horizon. I think we are in an El Nino, despite what BOM says. It has that feel--a long, dry summer.
Will be hoping for lots of rain (but no floods) and no more fires for us all! I'd do a rain dance, but I suspect my ducks would laugh at me, not to mention my kids...

There was only 5 seasons (and there was talk of two more) but I guess they were denied or decided to end it.

Still, last year of it, Jess. If you go to Uni it's totally different too. Good luck and I hope the 23 days pass really, really slowly. :)

Dale wrote: "Supposed to be 44 and with strong winds down our way tomorrow news and also said fires heading towards Sydney now."
:( Will be thinking of all of you on the mainland too, Dale.
It's heating up again here, with winds increasing. Australia never does things by half, does it?
Thought I'd cut and paste this comment from the facebook page I mentioned before:
"**INFORMATION THAT WILL HOPEFULLY COME AS COMFORT TO A LOT OF YOU**
..LOTS of people who have arrived at Nubeena have not been uploaded to the Red Cross database (they had 1500 people there at lunchtime) because it was all done on paper today. There was not enough phone reception or any internet coverage so all the names are having to be written down and shipped to Hobart so they can be typed up into the Red Cross database. They started writing them ALL down at 1pm today and more people have been arriving.
People are panicking that because they're not on the register database they are "missing". Please tell people not to panic just because they haven't made the register yet, hundreds of safe people aren't updated yet so don't assume the worst."
So the missing people list may not be as long. Hoping it's the case.
Good luck to all who have bush fires in their areas, both mainland and here!

Thanks for that Gina:) They are saying they are pretty sure everyone is accounted for now, which is wonderful.
My sister-in-law and her husband are in danger in South Western Victoria...they have packed up ready to evacuate, are on a property and have to leave chooks, lambs etc there. They've been told by the firies to wait until/if they are told to go. It's so terrifying!

Oh no!:(:( Having to leave animals behind would be heart breaking! Wishing them all the best, Brenda! Keep us informed. I think it helps to know people are behind you in a situation like this. I'm totally fed up with summer already :(
I know...she has bloodlines of show class chooks going back generations. I'm totally hating summer too..it already seems much worse than in previous years!
Thanks Gina:)
Thanks Gina:)
:(:( And the tricky thing with chooks is that come night fall, they go to sleep and won't move until sunrise. I've tested this quite a few times, as that's when we take the excess roosters out of the house, to avoid stressing them before they get the chop (not nice, but necessary). I was thinking this over last night, when the smoke was so intense. The goats could be set free, the ducks too, but it wouldn't change a thing with chooks, as they wouldn't budge, even in the case of a fire.
It does feel worse. I think it's because we have had La Ninas for the past three years, and so much growth due to the rain. Now it's a neutral or El Nino year, and the green growth is brown and highly flammable.
Hoping your sister-in-laws chooks will be ok. Better still that they put out the fire quickly!!

OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!! I just saw Les Miserables and never have I cried so much! The acting was brilliant, incredible! the scenery and background was astounding and music, songs and voices were beautiful. The best voice (and the most surprising) was from Eddie Redmayne who played Marius! This was so beautiful and great.

Yes you are so right Gina! We hope the fire gets put out, and the chooks can continue to sleep!! She has put 1 male and 3 females into cages ready to take, but the others will have to stay:(

Glad she can take some! I suspect my ducks would join us on our boat in the bottom dam, as I am their second mum. Could be a bit chaotic with the dogs though. :)
Horrible fire conditions everywhere tomorrow. Keep safe everyone!

The whole country is in danger it seems...terrible conditions for tomorrow in Tasmania, Victoria, SA and NSW! Haven't heard of any problems in WA, NT or Q'ld and I hope it stays that way.
Take care everyone!

Yes, it's so scary, Brenda. They expect Sydney to reach 43 degrees, making it one of the hottest days ever, here. I feel sorry for those who have to endure these sorts of conditions day after day.

Oh, Brenda I hope so too. It is scary. Just be safe and stay cool.

Fingers crossed they are wrong Brenda

Brenda, how are your brother and sister-in-law?

Stay safe and cool Dale. I hope there's some cool relief coming your way soon. We're very lucky today here in Melbourne. At the moment it's overcast and quite cool and it's only expected to be 31 today which is bearable. I've come to dread the summers since we moved to a high risk area but I love where we live so I guess I just have to put up with a few anxious months as the cost. Mind you we are a family of five and I'm the only one who stresses about this type of thing!!!
Michael wrote: "Sounds like a plan Brenda. What type do you have? split system, ducted?"
Split system Michael, and I just turned it on...10am! It's almost 35 already:(
