That may be true, Tracey, but I'd hate reading the works of an author who wasn't! :) (though, truth be told, I've harboured suspicions concerning some pretty famous authors, that they could not possibly have read much more than an aspirin label and the back of a cereal box :)). Naturally, I will forbear *cough*Hemingway*cough* to name the authors in question. :)

Said it before - love your style Mark :) I remember reading 'The Old Man and The Sea' in high school and even though I knew, well at least, I was TOLD, it was a classic I just didn't see it myself. Never bothered with Hemingway since.

Just a wondering... my Mum used to have a beautiful [well actually it was fairly plain in truth] cactus that would bloom stunning, delicate white flowers but only at night. It was my Mum's favourite plant in the garden and I've looked after it with far more attention than I've ever paid to anything in the garden but recently someone poisoned it - at least that's the only explanation I have. It literally went from perfect health one day to completely dead yellow stems almost overnight. I'm pretty devastated by the loss and would love to replace it but I cannot, for the life of me, think of the name. I went to the nursery and the guy just looked at me like I was nuts.
Any one know what I'm talking about?

message 7609: by Mark (last edited Jan 23, 2013 06:41PM) (new)

Mark Thanks, Tracey. Hemingway's 100-word vocabulary, macho ethos, and apparent inability to construct a compound sentence have always maddened me.

Could your cactus have been a cereus? They bloom at night and do have white flowers (though it can vary, depending on the variety). Hylocereus undatus flower:

That's a gorgeous flower Mark. Hopefully it will be the one Tracey is looking for. We had a look in our garden book, but there are so many cactus plants that's it's nearly impossible if you don't know what you're looking for!

Yes, I don't have any cacti, nor is there any place to plant one in the asphalt of the parking lot of the complex, here :) , but if the cereus flower were an independent bloom, I wouldn't mind having some in a pot. :) Cacti are infinite in variety, even here, so this was just sort of an informed random guess, based on one of the few types I'm personally familiar with.

Much kisses and hugs Mark - you found it!!!! I'm so happy because it was one of those special mother/daughter things that Mum and I shared before she passed - sounds strange, I know, but neither Mum nor I were/are ever what you'd call normal :)

Robbie's [the hubby] is headed for the nursery as we speak, so to speak, to either purchase or order one for me... I can hardly wait to have this beauty once more. Although this time instead of having the pot at my front door I think I'll put it in the back yard - that way Robbie and I can still enjoy it without risking some utter b@#$%@&^ poisoning it again!

No other news of any excitement except that it's started raining and looks as though it is definitely set in for a while. Typical really because today's washing day and I've got a lot of clothes that need washing lol ;)

Emily E (emily_e1) | 347 comments Melanie wrote: "Just coming to rant about Melbournes ridiculous price for rego and car insurance :( "

I used to complain about the price of car regos until a friend of mine was involved in a serious accident. She had to get metal pins in her arms and leg and was in hospital for some time and quite a bit of rehab. The insurance you get with your rego paid for it ALL!

As long as you're not drunk or on drugs when you are in a motor vehicle accident your rego gives you insurance. It would have cost her many thousands of dollars otherwise (Medicare does not cover all of that).

I have never once complained about paying/the cost of rego since then.

message 7624: by Faye (new)

Faye (lastchapter) | 409 comments Rego is high, I agree, but good point Emily. However, I do think that rego should be able to be paid in small amounts ahead of time, such as your utility accounts. You know so much per week, month etc. Times are tough on families at the moment, they should work out some type of payment system.

message 7625: by Emily (new)

Emily E (emily_e1) | 347 comments That's a good idea. It could be like rates where you can choose to pay a lump sum or once a month etc.

They didn't have one in stock but it will be there by next Tuesday - I can hardly wait. Thank you so much Mark - your guess lifted my spirits enormously :)

As for Rego - I agree there should be some kind of plan available to pay it in smaller amounts throughout the year. I'm chronic for forgetting about it until the notice comes and then it's a scramble to pay the bill on time. You'd think I'd learn but not so much ???

Raining again today which is nice. The kittens are getting unbelievably adventurous and playful - which is cute until they start climbing in and out of my display cabinet. It's a beautiful cabinet but it's made up of smaller and larger compartments which the kittens think is an ideal playground. I've had to find a hideaway for all my expensive artwork/statues etc that were on display which is not an ideal solution - I'll think of something eventually :)

message 7641: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 3569 comments The major floods in Queensland were in mid-Jan 2011. And no, not a good time again for people of central coastal & northern Queensland... And people up around Bundaberg have had their homes ripped apart by gusting winds. I'm only in Brisbane, but even here the winds are rather alarming. I've reschedued any plans to go out and am curled up with a book , my phone and my Goodreads app!

Yes in Newcastle Kathryn. We got a lot of the rain and excess water in 2011, and it has been predicted as 'flooding rains' for here as well...the water is already over half way across our back patio heading toward the back door. Which is fine at the moment, as we step up to the door, and it's just 'wet' not 'flowing'. Our worst experience with water in the back patio was back in 2007 when the Pasha Bulka ran aground...everyone probably remembers that! And we are a LONG way in from the coast....about 25 min drive..
