Tracey Alley (traceya) | 485 comments Because I've always been passionate about reading and writing myself I try to encourage any youngster I might come across to read more. I have a couple of kids in the neighborhood who've adopted me as an 'auntie' and I often lend them books or read with them. I think the younger a child is when you start to encourage them with reading the more likely they are to be passionate readers when they're adults.

Thank you Brenda, & what is also great, is anyone can buy direct from Digital Print Australia as well.

message 5761: by Monica Lamperd (new)

Monica Lamperd | 51 comments Question! Does anyone know of any discussion groups (or even a thread on this group) where I can post the plot of a book that I've forgotten the title of? Pretty keen to find it but have no idea what it's called!

Anyway.. I'll post it here as well so if any of you happen to know the title you may be able to tell me! :)

It's a children's chapter book, with a picture of a boy pushing a trolley full of bottles on the front cover. The family was working class, kind of struggled with income, and the boy would collect bottles to recycle to make a bit of money. His name was either Jack, Charlie or Tom.

It's a very vague recollection of the story but if you happen to know which book I'm talking about let me know! :)

Here's the thread for that question Monica (and this thread is a good start!) http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/5... ...I'm sorry, it doesn't ring any bells with me, but maybe someone else can help:)

Tracey Alley (traceya) | 485 comments Hope you're feeling better Margaret. Congratulations David, nothing quite like holding your novel in your hands to make you feel like a real writer.

I've started to feel really tired again lately - I hope it's not a return of my previous blood condition. I'll have to get the doc to check it out but in the meantime I think I need to concentrate a little more on my diet and general fitness, maybe that will help. Along with taking my iron supplement of course

Do hope you're ok Tracey, and you don't have a recurrence of that horrible problem you had before! Take care of yourself.

Margaret Sharp (margaretlynettesharp) | 1215 comments Maybe it's the weather, Tracey, but I'm tired, too. The headache proved to be a forerunner of a respiratory bug, but I dosed myself up and went out dancing last night with my husband. Paid for it today...
Sorry you've had blood problems. Good nutrition is vital for health, as is exercise at an appropriate level and only when you're feeling up to it. (I know I overdid it with the dancing...)
Look after yourself, Tracey!

Margaret Sharp (margaretlynettesharp) | 1215 comments Just warning everyone. Malla Nunn, the great crime fiction writer, has had her Twitter account hacked. I received a DM claiming to be from her, talking about a photo that made me look ridiculous. I was seriously puzzled and concerned, and eventually contacted Malla, who advised me it was spam, and that she'd been hacked! Not good...

message 5773: by Mark (new)

Mark Argh! Hacking is ubiquitous. I've got to the point at which I will conduct no actual business on the internet. Of course, avoiding professional engagement on the internet would be somewhat counterproductive for an author! (Don't know why I'm using all these exclamation points. It must be the coffee.)

message 5774: by Margaret (new)

Margaret Sharp (margaretlynettesharp) | 1215 comments We authors need the internet for so many reasons.
I don't understand hackers. They spoil things, often for strangers.

message 5775: by Mark (new)

Mark Well, according to Martha Stout, at least 5% of people are sociopaths, from which reservoir, I guess, you get a lot of malicious hackers -- not to mention a fair sampling of malicious everything else. I don't understand them either, but then, I suppose if you're motivated mostly by Schadenfreude, it's not inconsistent to want to spoil things. :(

Mark The rain, it raineth on the just,
And also on the unjust fella.
But mostly on the just, because
The unjust steals the just's umbrella.

Actually, we could use some rain here. It is (as always) infernally hot and arid. (Good reason for me to stay in and read, too, though.)
Love the cat picture!

Wow...Texas! Do you have any yellow roses in your garden? ;)

message 5783: by Mark (new)

Mark If there were a garden that could survive the nuclear blast furnace (and actually, I live in an apartment complex dominated by parking lots), then I'd probably have some. In truth, though, I don't believe I've ever seen a yellow rose in the state; I suspect it's all been just a massive marketing ploy.

I'd love to send some rain your way Mark....I'll just text "send the rest to Texas" to mother nature...I'm sure she'll be on top of it. It has been raining here since last night and hasn't stopped for the past 19 hours at my place. I'm thinkingof making the dog a set of stilts - she's a Jack Russell Terrier with a low centre of gravity - lol.

I hope your appartment block osn't on
77 Shadow Street. It's next on my TBR list.

message 5786: by Mark (new)

Mark I always know when winter arrives here, because the temperature dips momentarily below seventy. You have my commiseration, though. I grew up in the North, and had very little tolerance for the cryogenic effects of prolonged exposure.

message 5787: by Mark (new)

Mark Hi, Vixen, I'm afraid Mother Nature has lost her cellular service, and no longer receives texts. Of course, it could be a radical change in the global climate, or possibly a massive, occult conspiracy to drown Jack Russell terriers -- there's no telling. (The climate change theory involves having recourse to science and actual knowledge, which is forbidden by statute where I live.)

message 5788: by Mark (new)

Mark Brenda - No, it would clearly not be possible to keep anything alive here. (Well, mold might be an exception, but it lacks some of the appeal of flowers and Jack Russell terriers.)

message 5789: by Mark (new)

Mark Vixen - I hadn't even heard of Koontz's book, but I checked the link. Is 77 Shadow Street supposed to be in Texas? (Of course, if it's a mansion inhabited by an ancient, malignant spirit, it's probably someplace around here.)

message 5790: by Blue Eyed Vixen (new)

Blue Eyed Vixen | 35 comments Mark - you gave it that "homely" feel that made me think of this book. I lack malicious highrises in my area...just have a few angry Maltese dogs in the neighbourhood. :)

message 5791: by Mark (new)

Mark Vixen - Heh. Yes, Koontz -- evoking unspeakable horrors -- would definitely make one think of Texas. Well, at least they're dogs, and not falcons. :)
