Oh Tracey...good luck! It's awful when you don't feel comfortable in your own home, and have to either be out, or pretend to be! So sad that she has to resort to that sort of thing...maybe that's why she doesn't have any other friends, she's driven them all away!

Tracey Alley (traceya) | 485 comments Thanks Margaret, Mark & Brenda - this is going to be a tough one for me because I tend to be very soft hearted and am a generally giving person anyway but there is a limit and unfortunately she's definitely crossed the line, over and over again. I'm going to try and be diplomatic about it but I'm just going to start saying 'no' and that 'I'm busy' and hopefully she'll get the message without their having to be a major confrontation. Wish me luck :)

Do you have to open the door Tracey? Maybe that would give her the message without the confrontation, if you did it often enough? But 'I'm busy, sorry you can't come in' might work...good luck!

Thats awful I know sometimes you just need time to your own family, it's hard to know which way to go. Maybe you just have to try the "Look sorry, can't talk now, have to go", but still try to stay pleasant. Just tell her you have a lot going on at the moment, family wise, and you need some space.
Good Luck.

Mark, France has a lot of telephone solicitors based in northern Africa, Marocco or Tunesia (part of what the French call 'le Magreb', which also includes Algeria). Sometimes I really wonder how some of them got recruited. Their French is so bad! I can just imagine the conversation between you (heavy US accent) and one of the guys from the Magreb!! Would probably not get too much info across!! LOL

But we don't get too many unsollicited calls as we are on the 'liste orange'; The phone company is not allowed to sell our number to 3rd parties.

BTW, do you speak German? Thought I saw part of a comment....
Tschüss :)

message 5959: by Mark (last edited Jun 12, 2012 06:40PM) (new)

Mark Salut, Brigitte!

I hope you didn't think that was an authentic phonetic representation of the way I usually speak! :) I can actually manage French without much of an accent, but it would have been immense fun to put on your telephone predators from "le Magreb!" Regrettably, I don't think I'll ever get to France again. :( As for German, though, I haven't used it on GR. Ich kann es ohne Schwierigkeiten lesen, aber habe nicht viel Gelegenheit gehabt, es zu sprechen. (For those living in the part of Australia that isn't in Germany :) :) , "I can read it, no problem, but haven't had much occasion to speak it.") If what you saw was something I'd posted recently, it might have been in Danish, but most likely it was somebody else's post. (I'm assuming you speak German, Brigitte? I actually scoped out German - Fantasie, but have no reason particularly to read or discuss books about vampires in German, and in any case, it's by invitation only, and I didn't want to bother with hurdles. I do belong to Francophonie, but it seems not to be terribly active. The groups in which I mostly hang out are this one, at night, and Bookish, more diurnally. :))

He's a funny man, is our Mark;P

I have to show you all a link to an article in our local newspaper. I was requested to give an interview for the National Year of Reading, which our local paper is backing fantastically. They are doing different articles every week, as well as giving away copies of new releases, one of which I was fortunate enough to win a few weeks ago.

This weeks article is about GR and the work we do to promote reading:)

Thanks, Brenda, but my keyboard isn't even as intelligent as my cat. (Nor am I, for that matter, and my cat passed away in 2008. So neither I nor the keyboard has been determined empirically to be half so intelligent as a zombie cat. Poor cat. :( )

I think "Salutary Brigitte" might be a nice name, with "Salutary" as some sort of honorific, like "sainted" or "Brigitte-san." We could adopt it to be used intramurally by all members of this thread. Are you with me, Salutary Mish?

Margaret Sharp (margaretlynettesharp) | 1215 comments What a lovely article, Brenda! I've been out most of the day, so I've only just found it.
Great to see your efforts are being acknowledged, in addition to the promotion of the National Year of Reading 2012.
My local paper, The St George and Sutherland Shire Leader, has published several articles about the National Year of Reading 2012, and several local libraries are displaying sculptures made from unwanted books. The Leader covered this story. Though I must say, I'd prefer to see the books being read than converted.:)

Ron and I did some shopping at Roselands, and bought Chicki Rose a soft bed for the living-room, which has cold, vinyl floors; and a new toy rope. When we gave her the toy, she ran off with it in her mouth, looking as pleased as a little child whom Santa had just visited! In due course, she tried out her new bed, still carrying the toy...:) She's a lovely little dog.:):)

message 5984: by Margaret (new)

Margaret Sharp (margaretlynettesharp) | 1215 comments Chicki Rose is a Maltese cross, probably 90% Maltese. She's 20 months old, and we adopted her early last November from the RSPCA shelter at Yagoona.
I saw her on the internet for a few days before Ron and I decided to ring there, but once we got into the car to go we were on tenterhooks lest she be 'spoken for'. He hurried me in while he parked the car. I located Chicki Rose and said we'd have her, subject to Ron's approval; but then I couldn't find him! It was a nightmare, although thankfully brief, and of course it had a very happy ending.:)

You do me (and my poor, dead, zombie cat) much too much honor. Out of curiosity, I just did a book comparison, and we have 24 in common (mostly Harry Potter and Charlaine Harris), but I note that you currently have a total of 666 of them. This is clearly a metaphysical danger to the balance of Australia, and may cause the earth to precess on its axis and go wonky. I think you should quickly read something else! :) :) :)

Having never flown, I can only go on reports of the misery of jet-lag, and thereby heartily commiserate.
Maybe you'll feel better, later on.
I'm not an early morning person any more, especially on these cold winter mornings. I rarely get up until Ron brings me in a cup of tea: before you all think I've got him well trained, I'll hasten to add that this is his main contribution in the food and drink department...:) Nonetheless, it's very much appreciated, and especially at a time when getting out of bed is itself a misery.

Ron's never-fail remedy for sleeplessness is three Weetbix with milk and sugar. Says it settles him down beautifully.

message 5999: by Mark (new)

Mark Yes, Margaret, but now I have actually to deal with this peculiar, bright gaseous disk rising on the horizon, and birds chirping and crickets stridulating and people outside being conscious, and it's really quite disconcerting. Also, there's the possibility of combustion if I open the shades. I know nothing of these "weetbix" whereof you speak :) (though I do think they were mentioned on an episode of Buffy). Probably, we don't have them on this side of the planet, and that accounts for our general unconsciousness, but anyway, there is now light outside the window, and I have to go crawl under something. :)

message 6000: by Margaret (last edited Jun 13, 2012 05:37AM) (new)

Margaret Sharp (margaretlynettesharp) | 1215 comments Hi Mark,

Ron feared that you'd know nothing of our Weetbix.
They're whole wheat, flaky breakfast cereal in the form of a large biscuit. Ron and I like to dress them up for breakfast with sultanas, sliced banana (or canned peach slices), brown sugar and, of course, milk.
They are very easy to prepare, inexpensive, and have been around for a very long time, here in Australia.

We often hear the birds early in the morning; the wild birds outside, and our two budgies inside. I don't much like the idea of caged birds, but since one of our pair, the first, was in the process of being attacked by wild birds in the park when I found it, I decided that these captive-bred ones can have no life outside this environment. So, we bought it a friend, and now they swing (and chirp) through life, seemingly content.

Oh well, it's past my bedtime, so, as you're about to face the day, I'm going off to sleep. See you tomorrow. Bye.:)
