It's funny you write that Brenda! I've been completely unmotivated all day, but the moment the rain started this afternoon I was able to churn out an entire conclusion for one of my essays. The rain definitely has some kind of mystical power, even if it's just on my word-writing ability :P

Though it does get loud...

Our creek is rushing white water at the moment. Luckily we had the dams' overflows dug out last year. Water tanks are nice and full though:)

message 5709: by Margaret (new)

Margaret Sharp (margaretlynettesharp) | 1215 comments Our dams in N.S.W. are full, and the gardens are green. Some showers are forecast again over the next week.

message 5710: by [deleted user] (new)

Nice to be out of the drought years for a change. :)

message 5711: by Monica Lamperd (new)

Monica Lamperd | 51 comments We just recently hooked up our water tank for our shower to the roof so we're finally catching water! Needless to say.. good time to get it hooked up, it's completely full :) And our vegie garden is loving it too!

message 5712: by BlueSky (new)

BlueSky I don't understand why it's not mandatory for all houses to have a rainwater tank :) The best ever drinking water, and great back up. :)

And taking a side step ... Cold winter day + hot buttered crumpet with Vegemite = Heaven on a plate. Aaaahhh ...

message 5713: by Margaret (new)

Margaret Sharp (margaretlynettesharp) | 1215 comments Winter's great for tasty, warming meals. Soup and hot buttered toast, baked dinners, warm desserts...

message 5714: by [deleted user] (new)

Agreed, Vegemite on hot crumpets is pretty tasty indeed. I'm making pumpkin soup tonight. With fresh bread (from our friend at the markets). Oh, and warm desserts, lots of apples around at the moment, ideas, ideas...:)

Apple crumble - so easy and never disappoints. Has to be the recipe with brown sugar for topping tho :)

message 5716: by [deleted user] (new)

And whipped cream. Yum. :D

message 5717: by BlueSky (new)

BlueSky Amen!! lol

message 5718: by [deleted user] (new)

I make the pumpkin soup with oranges (juice only) added right at the end, so the taste doesn't cook out. And cream of course, and a dollop of tomatoe paste. Served with fresh bread and butter. Staves off the cold a treat. Eaten at the end of a Tassie winter day when the sun sets (abruptly) at 5pm.

message 5719: by [deleted user] (new)

Anyone have a good pumpkin scone recipe? We have a lot of pumpkins at the moment. :)

message 5720: by BlueSky (last edited May 26, 2012 08:39PM) (new)

BlueSky I lost my mum's recipe, so I use one from bestrecipes.com.au

I substitute spelt flour for normal flour and they turn out fine :)

Sorry bluesky but, I disagree about mandatory water tanks, firstly - I looked into this when we were building our house & found (like many) the cost was very prohibitive & then there was the pages of government regulations if you wanted to connect to taps inside the house.
Secondly - there is no need for water tanks in Cairns, unless one has the funds & wants to install a tank.

message 5722: by [deleted user] (new)

Bluesky, I'll look it up, I use their recipe for pikelets (every Sat morning, by the decree of my kids).

David, definitely necessary in VIC, A.C.T. N.S.W. S.A. W.A and TAS, though!!

message 5723: by [deleted user] (new)

But no, in Cairns your water tanketh runneth over :)

Don't get me wrong, I have lived at properties where
tanks are needed & a way of life, but they should be more affordable to those who need them.

Thanks Michael...Margaret, you just copy the link at the top of the page when you're in your group (or anywhere else you need to put a link in), then paste it into this 'comment' box...then post and it'll appear like when Michael did it above....

Tracey Alley (traceya) | 485 comments Hi all and thanks for the warm welcome back. I noticed you were talking about soups earlier - as it's coming on for winter now I usually cook up a huge batch of home made chicken soup - I use chicken thighs, potatos, turnips, parsnips, barley and a home made stock from cooking down the chicken thighs. Sometimes I might add some extra stock but usually the water from cooking the thighs is enough. I also make up a huge batch of chilli con carne - I cheat there and use mince and a pack of chilli con carne from Maggi's but it comes out beautifully. Then I bundle them all into containers with enough for two people, me and the hubby, and bingo you've got dinner taken care of for most of winter. My only other tip is have lots of
French loaves in the freezer as well to go with the soup or chilli and you're set.
