Margaret Sharp (margaretlynettesharp) | 1215 comments Sorry to hear she's gone. They're such a big part of our lives.
When I met Ron, I had three dogs: a border collie cross named Bessie, and two Maltese, named Rosie and Trixie. Ron wasn't actually a great lover of dogs, but in time he came to realise...
Bessie and Trixie both celebrated their sixteenth birthdays, but four years apart; and Rosie saw her thirteenth.
Our new baby, ChickiRose, came from the RSPCA at thirteen months of age, and is now nineteen and a half months. Very lively and playful.
What is your current dog(s) name(s)?

message 5602: by [deleted user] (new)

Molly is our gorgeous labrador, and Locky is our border-collie/blue heeler/kelpie cross. Molly is two years old, and Locky is 1 1/2. Just delightful! When I write (usually sitting in bed with my laptop (Terry Pratchett is quite right about the dressing gowns :))) They like to curl up, and sleep on me. We're pack:)

message 5603: by [deleted user] (new)

I know Emily showed me how to do this, but I'm a little tired (released a book today, faced and conquered the dreaded 'meatgrinder'! Ahhh!), so I'll do it this way.

Be prepared to be wooed (WARNING, image may cause people to go out and seek Staffordshire Terriers, on mass!)

Wow Jessy! That is fantastic!! Really great result and awesome commitment :)

Margaret Sharp (margaretlynettesharp) | 1215 comments I like the names, Molly and Locky. Locky sounds to have the same pedigree as Bessie. :)
Our ChickiRose is a real snuggler, whenever and wherever. She's also found our bed to her taste....:)
Her favourite toy is a brown and cream knotted rope, and she loves to show it off to us between her teeth. It's also a security snuggler.
Chicki can't bear to have either Ron or me out of her sight when we go out together, the sole exception being when I go to the dressing sheds to change for swimming. She's picked up this as routine, and knows it's no cause for panic.

I've not long got home, and had an amazing day!! A very long one, but wow...met some wonderful authors, and listened to some very interesting and inspiring panels. I'll do a 'review' of it all, with some photos over the next couple of days:)

Congratulations Jessy, that is so absolutely awesome!! You are to be commended for the commitment you put in! Well done:)

Molly loves socks! Locky melts into cuddles. Freya was never parted from us. When I worked at the Art School (A.N.U Photomedia Workshop, as the technical officer) she came with me. They had a no dogs on campus, policy, but it didn't apply to Freya. She was 'Best Dog' at our wedding, and came with us on our honeymoon, too! :)

Pack is pack. :)

Margaret Sharp (margaretlynettesharp) | 1215 comments Looking forward to reading all about it, Brenda! (And seeing the photos, of course!)

message 5611: by [deleted user] (new)

Me too! :)

message 5612: by Margaret (new)

Margaret Sharp (margaretlynettesharp) | 1215 comments Georgina, Chicki is never parted from us, either, except for shopping and those things where dogs are absolutely forbidden. She's been to Christmas parties, an engagement party, swimming club parties, the beach...
She seems to accept our two pet budgies, and they don't seem to worry about her when she gets near.:)

Freya's face revealed her lovely nature, which surely gained her acceptance and privileges. You were all so lucky to have such a wonderful relationship.

message 5613: by [deleted user] (new)

I think they are amazing creatures. I'm trying to teach Locky that well-behaved dogs have immense privileges! He's learning--young, lovely and excitable. Molly's a truly gentle soul, but Freya was an old soul. I'm a bit of a recluse. I hang out in my valley, with my family and other animals. Hee hee :)

Your Chicki sounds adorable!

message 5614: by Margaret (new)

Margaret Sharp (margaretlynettesharp) | 1215 comments Locky's at a good age to learn. They are so intelligent and perceptive, often with strong individual traits that sometimes need to be overcome to accept training.
Chicki is lovely. At the moment, she is sitting on my chair, next to Ron. Normally she sits underneath me while I'm on the computer.
She had a rough start in life, with two owners by the age of twelve months followed by a month's stint in the RSPCA. However, she's come through it all, and is a fun-loving girl.

message 5615: by [deleted user] (new)

Yes, a perfect age, and he is very smart. He has a slight...problem, with chooks and ducks. A few little accidents as a pup. We keep a good eye on him, as he still finds them almost irresistible ;)

Two owners in 12mths? Poor Chicki! Glad she has found you (and you, her). Some people should think twice before accepting a dog into their homes--it is for life--in sickness and in health...

message 5616: by Margaret (last edited May 18, 2012 05:16PM) (new)

Margaret Sharp (margaretlynettesharp) | 1215 comments I agree about the lifetime commitment of adopting a dog; they get so attached to us, I'm sure, and I can see how sensitive Chicki is to change and stress. She doesn't cope well with loud noise and movement, and we were told this when we adopted her.
I hope Locky has learned to accept ducks and chooks as part of his life! We had a golden Cocker Spaniel cross when I was young, and she was very good with our chooks. She even took up collecting their eggs, and was so careful she never broke any!

nawww!
I love staffys! have always wanted one, but my current sook of a dog hates them...well not hate more like terrified, we have a couple in our street who belong to idiots and attacked her one three separate occasions so now she is a little scared of them, which depresses me greatly, one the other hand she loves Great Danes so here's hoping lol

message 5618: by [deleted user] (new)

I knew a young, alcoholic squatter in Nimbin, when I was a teenager, who tried to make his lovely dog aggressive. He wanted him to be a guard dog, and would get very angry with me when I showered him with love. Hah! The aggression didn't stick (I suspect it was because the guy's own, outer show of aggression, was faked too). Sad though. I suspect his dog outlived him. :(

Staffy's have gained a bad rap. But although they are incredibly friendly to humans, they sometimes don't take to other dogs(unless they are socialised young, as Freya was).

I have no time for people who are cruel to animals. I am a hippy (with Goth/punk sensibilities) vegetarian. This is my mantra: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tpjtk-...
(The early Melanie version is much, much better, but it's currently not available on youtube (http://www.google.com.au/url?sa=t&...)

But my children and husband do, (eat animals) and I have no problems with it! :)

message 5619: by [deleted user] (new)

My cousin has three staffs and they are soo loveable and great with other dogs, its just unfortunate my own dog is now scared. People make me rather angry lol...to be fair my dog is also a huge sook, I feel its my fault for spoiling her a little to much

message 5620: by [deleted user] (new)

No, not your fault! My Freya was a sook too, and so is our Molly girl. I have a BF who had a dachshund (another legend in his own time) called Kev (he was the SBS dog for a while, you know the add that swirls around the room and the gorgeous dachshund appears, and wags his tail?). Well Kev was attacked out of the blue, a horrible experience for him, and it left him shaken and scarred (literally).

Some people shouldn't have animals in their care (makes me grumpy too!) .

message 5621: by Margaret (new)

Margaret Sharp (margaretlynettesharp) | 1215 comments The day after we brought Chicki home, she was attacked in my arms by a dog that looked as though it had Staffy in him...but I have a friend with a lovely calm one. A lot, or should I say, MOST, depends on their environment, primarily upbringing.

This is just a thought! When I moved last time I decided to sell the books I did not want to keep and I gave the money to charity, it made me feel good in two main ways 1. Books were gone and to a good home.
2. I made a donation to a charity that meant something to me and my family.
Just food for thought.Faye

message 5635: by [deleted user] (new)

When we moved from the mainland to Tasmania, half the moving truck was filled with boxes of our books. Many, many second hand and tip rescued books, but once upon a time, we managed to buy Folio editions too (my dream is to one day be able to do that again!). :D
