MARTINA'S LIST - SEPTEMBER CHALLENGE - 8/10

I just finished The Gargoyle by Andrew Davidson (★★★★★). This book was the read of the month in my neighborhood book club, and it was just my luck that it happened to be listed in the PNR "library" so I could use it for this challenge.

This book is amazing and disturbing. It's a horror and a love story. It's both a historical novel and a contemporary one. It's fabulous!

It's a first person story of a man (a porn star, even) who is horribly, horribly burned in a car accident. Everyone he knew abandons him and all his possessions are eaten away by the hospital bills. As he contemplates planning his own suicide, an amazing woman - a sculptor named Marianne Engel - walks into his room and begins telling him a story. This story is of their (supposed) past together and it spans not only hundreds of years, but continents and cultures, too.

The Gargoyle is an amazing story. A bit graphic in some areas, especially the vivid description of the accident and subsequent treatments in the hospital, so be forewarned should you decide to read it. The worst is in the first few chapters. Get past that and you'll probably be just fine reading the rest.

MARTINA'S LIST - SEPTEMBER CHALLENGE - 9/10

In the wee hours of this morning I finished Mockingjay (Hunger Games, #3) by Suzanne Collins (★★★★★). The Hunger Games trilogy is technically, YA, but it's the type of YA that's best for late teens and adults due to some pretty graphic content. It's a futuristic, dystopian society. Think The Running Man (only worse) with teenagers.

If you haven't heard of this series then you've been living in a cave. If you aren't reading it, then add it to your TBR shelf immediately, cause you are missing out.

Because it's the third, and final, book in the series, it's hard to give a synopsis review without any spoilers, so I'm going to skip that except to say that Katniss (our 17-year old protagonist) once again finds herself in the middle of all the action, only this time, she's The Mockingjay, the face of a revolution and must struggle to do what's right and stay true to herself at the same time.

Fans of the Ugly series will definitely love this series and vice versa.
