Joanne Moyer (catwoman56) | 81 comments I know I've said it 1000 times by now but Boy's Life is and always will be one of my all time favorite books. I also really liked Goin' South and pretty much anything else Mr McCammon has written including his Halloween treat for all his fans, the short story Strange Candy which I really enjoyed.

Char | 17469 comments Wasn't it good, Joanne? I'm not ashamed to admit that I was crying like a baby at the end.

I didn't actually cry but I found it really moving ~~ I think we all could use some 'strange candy'

Christopher Cooper | 45 comments The Five (his newest) was pretty good too. Maybe not as good as some of his other stuff, but def worth reading.

message 355: by Char (new)

Char | 17469 comments I enjoyed The Five a lot. I very much enjoyed the list of bands and songs at the end, as well. : )

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments FYI: The ebook of Robert McCammon’s novel of zombie Nazis, The Night Boat, is now available. There will be a Signed, Limited Edition available down the road, but for now, if you’re eager to give this classic a read, you can do so at a mass market paperback price.

Alissa (alissamerritt) | 141 comments Thanks to this group, I have picked up my first McCammon book, Boy's Life. I have been tearing through it, and find myself wanting to just read it until it's finished. Life gets in the way, but I should be finishing it this weekend. I'm absolutely in love with it, and will definitely be reading more of his books.

message 358: by Char (new)

Char | 17469 comments I'm so glad you're enjoying it, Alissa. : )

message 359: by Eileen (new)

Eileen I'm a new fan of Robert McCammon's books. I recently finished both Wolf's Hour and Swan Song and both were excellent reads. I'm hoping to read Boy's Life really soon, I've heard such great things about it.

message 360: by Char (new)

Char | 17469 comments You may even find Boy's Life to be the best of the three...but it's really hard to say since all three are great, IMO. : )

message 361: by Addy (new)

Addy | 5112 comments Yes, it is very good. Im really liking the main character and seeing things thru his life. Im so mad that his father wont go see The Lady and I really want to know more about the murder!

Char | 17469 comments Yeah, Corey is a memorable kid that's for sure.

Joanne Moyer (catwoman56) | 81 comments Eileen~though I haven't read one I didn't like, I would have to say those 3 are my favorites with Boys Life being in my top 10 all time favorite books

jzhunagev wrote: "Mine has the most creepy first chapters EVER!!

Just read the first chapter of that book and that'll be enough to get you hooked...

I'm having a hard time finding a copy of Swan Song"

I'm jealous of anybody who hasn't read this book and is reading for the first time. It's an excellent story.

Usher's Passing by Robert R. McCammon
Boy's Life by Robert R. McCammon
The Wolf's Hour by Robert R. McCammon
Mine by Robert R. McCammon
They Thirst by Robert R. McCammon

message 373: by Eileen (new)

Eileen I've read Wolf's Hour and reading now, Boys Life. Which of the books you posted, that I haven't read would you suggest I read next?

message 374: by Jon Recluse (new)

Jon Recluse | 12043 comments Mod
Depends on what you're in the mood for.

USHER'S PASSING is Southern Gothic
MINE is a psycho thriller, like MISERY
THEY THIRST is a vampire apocalypse book

message 375: by Eileen (new)

Eileen Thanks, Jon!

Anytime, Eileen! ;)

message 377: by Bill (new)

Bill | 0 comments The Matthew Corbett series starting with Speaks the Nightbird, is awesome!

message 378: by Jo (new)

Jo (asenath61) | 16 comments I loved Usher's Passing! I read it in my high school days and I was much more naive about my horror then, so I didn't see the plot twist coming. If I read it again at 52, it unfortunately wouldn't have the same impact.

message 379: by Hunter (new)

Hunter (goathunter) | 75 comments Swan Song is the Kindle Daily Deal today: only $1.99. That sale price is also good for NOOK, SONY, and iTunes!

Also, Boy's Life is on sale for the Kindle for only $3.79.

Amazing writer. Boy's Life and Gone South are sublime.

TJ (coachtim30) | 41 comments Caleb wrote: "Just starting Mine. Really looking forward to it."

I hope you enjoy it, Caleb. "Mine" has a great and evil antagonist. It's one of my favorites.

message 383: by Todd (new)

Todd Russell (toddrussell) | 118 comments I loved the opening in MINE. An amazing, terrifying antagonist portrait right out of the gate.

message 384: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments Yeah, that's a cringe-inducing opening for sure.

message 385: by Char (new)

Char | 17469 comments I remember loving Mine. I need to re-read that one, I think.

Got that one waiting in the wings.

message 387: by Caleb (new)

Caleb Blake (caleb72) | 43 comments I feel like I'm embarking on a group read. Thanks for the encouragement.

I only read one of his books a year as I like to prolong the pleasure. Mine is this year's read.

message 388: by Todd (last edited Feb 27, 2013 07:55PM) (new)

Todd Russell (toddrussell) | 118 comments Caleb - nice plan :) Of course given enough time, re-reads can be fun. I've been listening to the unabridged Swan Song audiobook for awhile now. Good audio narrator and a fun new way of sorts to revisit the story.

message 389: by Carl (new)

Carl Alves (carlalves) | 56 comments I haven't gotten a chance to read Mine, but it certainly sounds interesting. Anyone gotten a chance to read Stinger. Absolutely the best I've read from McCammon.

message 390: by Caleb (new)

Caleb Blake (caleb72) | 43 comments I loved Stinger. It was so long ago that I read it though. I don't think I could discuss it very intelligently.

message 391: by Char (new)

Char | 17469 comments I've slowly been re-reading a bunch of McCammon's. I lately picked up Stinger, Usher's Passing and The Night Boat. I'm going to savor them, and then perhaps, re-read Mine.

message 392: by Jason (new)

Jason (darkfiction) | 3233 comments Stinger is a favorite of mine. I read that one a few times when I was younger.

message 393: by Todd (last edited Feb 28, 2013 08:18AM) (new)

Todd Russell (toddrussell) | 118 comments Carl wrote: "Anyone gotten a chance to read Stinger. Absolutely the best I've read from McCammon."

I've read everything by McCammon (and some titles more than once) except for the Matthew Corbett series. There are supposed to be 10 of those and I might wait for all to be finished before starting them, just like I've waited to read The Dark Tower series by Stephen King (although I think King is done with that one).

Stinger reminded me of some of the 50s and 60s monster movies, only with more A- and less B-quality. McCammon is so good at making readers care about characters it's scary. He also has mad description and imagery skills, perhaps due to one of his major influences, Ray Bradbury.

McCammon said something about working on another sci-fi/horror monster book some time ago. I hope he finishes that!

message 394: by Char (last edited Feb 28, 2013 08:29AM) (new)

Char | 17469 comments Yes Todd! It's supposed to be an epic horror novel! I'm so excited about that one. :)
Then he has I Travel by Night coming out soon, I think, which is a novella.

I know! I saw that!

message 398: by Jason (new)

Jason (darkfiction) | 3233 comments I want to read only McCammon for the rest of the year. lol I'm really digging my reread of Boy's Life. I can't even say why I didn't like it all those years ago. I think maybe I was expecting something else. Or I just wasn't ready for it.

message 399: by Char (new)

Char | 17469 comments I'm glad that you're enjoying it more this time around, Jason. That's what friends are for. :)
