Is I Travel By Night a stand alone story? Or does it continue one of his other books? Should I read a certain book before reading it?
I haven't read anything by this author yet - though I have a few.

Hunter (goathunter) | 75 comments Hi, Traci. I Travel by Night is a standalone story. Mr. McCammon plans a couple more stories in the future, but there's nothing else you need to read first.

message 507: by Char (new)

Char | 17469 comments It's a perfect time of year for that book too. Coming of age combined with the coming of spring and summer. It's a wonderful story. :)

Bob (ilovepie) | 158 comments Yeah, I agree Boy's Life is the one you should read first. If you liked it then I recommend reading Swan Song as your second by him.

Lexa Cain (lexa_cain) | 21 comments I agree with Boy's Life and Swan Song.
I also like Wolf's Hour and Stinger.

message 511: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm going to start Boy's Life this weekend.
(Damn peer pressure, gets me every time. Lol.)

message 512: by Char (new)

Char | 17469 comments Yeah, everything that Lexi said plus Usher's Passing, The Five and all of the Matthew Corbett books. :)

Just had a Meg Ryan cafe scene go through my head when I saw that.

Apologies if I offended.

Char | 17469 comments Blue World is on sale today at Amazon, if anyone is interested. I'm reading it right now and the first 4-5 stories were excellent.

I'm not a "short story guy", but for McCammon and "Blue World", I made an exception. It's an outstanding collection of tales!!

I'm about half way done with Boy's Life and I'm very impressed by the writing. He hits the notes of nostalgia perfectly. Another author I can't believe I'd never heard of. And another one I'll be reading more of. I have Swan's Song so it'll probably be that one.

Traci, I read BOY'S LIFE for the first time just months ago! I couldn't believe it took me that long to get to it. "wow" pretty much sums it up... And yes, he is that good, consistently. :)

message 528: by [deleted user] (new)

I picked up Blue World when it was on sale before...

Good to hear Boy's Life isn't a one book wonder. I am looking forward to reading Swan's Life now. I hear it is similar to The Stand. One of my favorite books. And I love end of the world stories. I usually wait between larger books but I probably won't here.

message 529: by Maxine Marsh (new)

Maxine Marsh | 737 comments Traci, I read Boy's Life this year and just recently read Swan Song, and I was not disappointed. A 1000 page book that kept me intrigued the whole way through!

@Charlene - Thanks for the link to Blue World on sale. I went to buy more McCammon the other day and didn't because they are so pricey.

You guys are seriously wetting my appetite for Boys's Life! The only other book which I read that sounds similarish is Dan Simmons's Summer of Night ... And that was magnificent!

message 531: by Kate (new)

Kate | 3525 comments I think I might start Boy's Life in the next couple of weeks. I'm getting jealous of everyone else reading and discussing it. :)

message 532: by Bill (new)

Bill | 0 comments Enjoy "Boy's Life", my favorite book. Then get ready for McCammon's Matthew Corbett series, starting with "Speaks the Nightbird". The first five books of the series have been outstanding! They should keep you busy for awhile.

I'll be happier when Speaks the Nightbird is available as an ebook. I've almost repurchased all the paperbacks as ebooks, but not this one :(

That's OK. I've actually got at least 3 of McCammon's books to read before that one anyway. I'm just having a whinge.

Char | 17469 comments Traci L. wrote: "Some readers have never had a bike I guess... Or have forgotten what it feels like to be a kid."

Which is funny, because that is partly what the book is about..how we have forgotten. There's a couple of paragraphs in the book about magic and how we lose it. I'm guessing those reviewers lost it in a big way, and didn't even realize the way back to it was right in their very hands.
It's too bad.

I can't stand snarky reviews.
