RRRC's 1st Reading Tournament: Introduction and Guidelines
Quick question about the title relay - it says similar words so can I go like death, dead, undead?Oh, and occasionally I have a reading day where I'll read two or three books and I'm terrible about updating my challenge lists so...can I just put (Jul 15-17) or (Jul 15) after each book? My books won't be overlapping as I'm a single book kinda gal.
Thanks!

Words that belong to the title only. Series name is not included.

I've edited the original post. It has to be the exact word, not a variation of it.
Also if you can't update your post before reading the book, that's fine, as long as your chain does not show any overlapping. Books started and finished within the same day is not considered overlapping.
Okay, everyone. Keep the questions coming, so we can avoid any confusing once the Tournament starts.. I'll see about summarizing the answers before the 15th and then you can check the first post for the final rules.
Thanks for all the input. Sounds like we are going to have some fun. : )
Oh, so overlapping would be book one (Jul 15), book two (July 16-19), book three (July 17-18) etc?Oh, and thanks for answering the other questions :)
Great Challenge Yz!! I think I will try it, but I don't know which track to do as of yet. Can't wait to put a list together!
Nairabell wrote: "Oh, so overlapping would be book one (Jul 15), book two (July 16-19), book three (July 17-18) etc?Oh, and thanks for answering the other questions :)"
Nope. Overlapping would be
Book one - Started July 15 - Finished July 18
Book two - Started July 16 - Finished July 19
That would be overlapping and is not allowed for this challenge.
I don't know if someone asked this earlier, but can we use books from other challenges if they fit into this challenge or is that a no-no? Thanks!
Hina wrote: "I don't know if someone asked this earlier, but can we use books from other challenges if they fit into this challenge or is that a no-no? Thanks!"Yes, you can.
I am going to need to adjust my chain if there is no plurals allowed. Oh well. I will have to take a look at my TBRs. :-P See I should read the directions better lol.

Ugh I should have packed all my books already. I didn't seal the boxes. But they're somewhat out of order. I can't decide what to start with. I have a couple of library books I need to read and return before I move. But I can't make a decent chain out of one of them. I have a library ebook that expires in 2 wks that I can make a good chain out of but all the books I need are packed. I could probably find them though. Then I really want to read Dead in the Family and I could make a good chain out of that but again all the books are packed.
Ack! I guess I do 2 tracks and make the 2nd one the # of words in the title one. That might be easier to work around while the books are packed. and then go back to whatever connected word chain I might have started.
Ok just thought of another question that I don't remember seeing. If we stop a connected word chain and start another one-is the 1st one dead to us or can we go back to it? Or if we go back does it just start over as a new change?
And I promise to stop asking so many questions once this starts. I probably wouldn't ask so many if I wasn't moving and didn't have to worry about which books are packed where and keeping some out for easy access.
LOL! I'm getting a kick of all the planning that you guys are doing. I only have my Track One defined, and it was a no-brainer since I'm going to use the same author (Agatha Christie) over and over again. As for Track Two, I'll just play as I go: if I happen to read a book that fits the challenge, I'll use it; if it doesn't fit, I'll just take a pause in the challenge. This is a loooong tournament and I'll need a break now and then. :)
I have my track 2 figured out...doing the copyright one...I have books from 2010 to 1978 with no breaks...

Thanks for pointing that out, Dee, I missed it. :)

And .... holy cow that's amazing! I'm scared of you now, gonna have to get my speed racer shoes on for track 2. LOL
I always do that when I start a challenge-I do all this planning and then I end up reading just what I feel like reading. I'm a pretty high volume reader so I usually do good anyway. But this is the first time I've done one like this where I have to connect one book to the other. Usually it's a generalized series challenge or something like that. I did a USA related challenge recently and by the end I was desperate for a Regency Romance or an off planet sci-fi romance.
What I like about this challenge is that if I start a chain with say the Ghost Walker books by Christine Feeha-I can read some other books in between them if I want and I either work them into a 2nd track theme or I just don't count them. It's not like I have to read 6 Ghostwalker books in a row.
Mary wrote: "What I like about this challenge is that if I start a chain with say the Ghost Walker books by Christine Feeha-I can read some other books in between them if I want and I either work them into a 2n..."Yup, I love that too. I'm too fickle and I wouldn't be able to have a monogamous relationship with this challenge for such a long time. :D

Dina wrote: "Yes, I do, southpaw. *hangs head in shame*"Lol...it's okay, Dina. I'll be doing the same. Please don't tell my other challenges.
OK. I plan to start on July 16; Track 1 - Author challenge.Lisa Shearin - Bewitched & Betrayed
Nalini Singh - Archangel's Kiss
I will post as I go along.
This will be great fun as well as a challenge to keep up! Great idea, Yz!
Another challenge slut here. I'm in 3 now. 4 if you count my PBS challenge to reduce my TBR by 100 books in 2010. (so far that hasn't happened but only because I can't stay out of the thrift stores)
Dina wrote: "I'm in, gasp, 9 challenges... What does that make me? Slut doesn't cut it, LOL."I'm in 15 that start in July and over 20 if you included ones that started before then. Luckily about 8 of them are monthly, so they will be over soon. Of course, I'll probably just pick them up again next month. I think I need an intervention...

I'm glad I can use the same book in more than one challenge sometimes. Otherwise, I would never make it. :)
i use the same books on a regular basis...i'm in probably 12-16 right now (including ones for other groups...) - I normally do the 4 monthly ones here (read the month; monthly, the pick-it for me and the FAC); the monthly and 2 pick it for mes on the M/M and then various quarterly challenges and yearly challenges
that's the only reason I signed up for so many: 1 is a challenge to read 1 1st in a series book per month for a year-easy one to do. One is just to keep track of the # of books I acquire and a list of the books I read or purge and attempt to end the year with 100 less. 1 is just to read books that fit into certain cover categories over a 6m period. The last is this one. None of them are really restrictive to genre or anything.
OK (yes annoying question lady again)-I'm still confused on 2 things. I thought I knew the answer to one but after rereading the posts-I'm still not sure. I posted some heavily posted books to my shelf on PBS that I haven't read yet and one was ordered which has thrown off my reading plan. I can fit it into a long chain but I had library books I wanted to finish that I can't connect to the word chain. 1: For those of us who normally have multiple books going at once time-can we count 2 books that overlapped but go on different tracks? Tomorrow can I start the 1st book for Track 1 and then the 1st book for Track 2?
2: If we abandon a word chain and start another one-can we go back to add on that first word chain or will it have to be started over?
Sorry for all the questions but I'm moving and have to decide which books to pack up and which to seperate out for a short term TBR.
1 - you can count two books if there are on separate tracks yes2 - I don't think Yz answered that one, but I would assume no...you'll have to wait on an answer from her though
thanksMy ex is taking out daugther to his parents house for a week. I should be able to get a good head start for this.
Hi I don't know if any one has asked, but do can we use the author's middle name or is it first and last name only? For example, Tracy Anne Warren.
Thanks.

Yes, you can used the last letter of the middle name.
I have a question. I'm doing the Author Relay and Copyright Year Relay and I've made my list of books I'm planning on reading. Do I have to go in order of the list or can I skip around?
