I agree with The Alchemist. I thought it was horrible!

message 104: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly Another bad one was The Awakening and The Struggle (The Vampire Diaries, #1-2) by L.J. Smith . So boring, horrible writing.

message 105: by Christine (new)

Christine | 16 comments I think The Shack was the worst thing I have ever suffered through. I'm not one to not finish books, but I just couldn't do it with this one.

message 106: by Barry (new)

Barry Eysman (barryedmund) | 13 comments THE BROTHERS KARAMAZOV was the strangest. The trial evolved into a comedy. I thought I had gotten a Monty Python translation, but am told that's a real translation. Unless I got one of the bad versions, JAMES JOYCE'S ULYSSES was so flat and tedious. Th

It is strictly morbid curiosity that has had me continue these books...

message 108: by Maggie (new)

Maggie I agree that The Shack was a major struggle, so was Catch-22, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, The Alchemist, Dewey: The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched the World, another book about a parrot who could talk, and anything by Ian McEwan.

message 109: by Debbie (new)

Debbie (debbie_smith) | 43 comments I don't remember the name of the worst book I ever bought but it is the only book I have ever thrown into the trash and wanted to burn. It was suppose to be a historic romance novel but wasn't that historic and had no romance. I was 16 so was reading it sometime in the seventies, the book was set in the sixties. Every other word in the book was a curse word and instead of romance it had rape, bullying, verbal abuse, emotional abuse, and much more. It also had no storyline, just one abuse after the other. All the scenes were very graphicly explained.
Guess my disgust erased the name and author but I'm certain if I ever pick it up again I will recognize it. Though I respect the author's right to write it I do wish it had been represented better so I would not have picked it up.

I love his stuff too. Well I've only read the one book The Terror by Dan Simmons . I was hoping that the one you mentioned would be just as good.

Kimberly I read Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro last year and I consider it a waste of $20.00 but that's just my opinion. I went in with high hopes for it. I was so excited when I bought it I started reading it right away.Unfortunately I realized within the first 50 pages that the book was dull, and poorly written. I only finished it because I was reading it for a buddy read but it took me a month to read it it gave me headaches everytime I picked it up.

Oh well...

message 118: by Alondra (new)

Alondra Miller yes..*tears up*... I just love him so much, but with most folks, it is either you love him or hate him. Love every opinion regardless of my heartache... hehehe

message 119: by Alondra (new)

Alondra Miller i hear you... some books are just like that... like throwing a book against a wall when it is just too stupid to bear, or kicking the computer because you just can't take the torture anymore!! ...okay, maybe that's just me... :D

LOL I just started this book yesterday. . .I'm only on maybe chapter three, but I'll have to admit that I'm not to thrilled with it so far.

Elise-Pinterest+Goodreads=The Perfect Book Boyfriend (eliselovesshinyandnew) | 15 comments Get Lucky! by Nona Wesley . I actually have a whole category for horrible books. This is just one.

Lorecca Fernandez (iamlorecca) I vote for Calling Romeo by Alexandra Potter and Beastly by Alex Flinn for the Worst Books Ever Award. Oh, and for the record, I'm no fan of The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger either. So there.

Nnnoooo.... I loved TLOTR!! So sorry you did not enjoy it. I can't get into the other JRR Tolkien books, like The children of hurin. I just couldn't get into the flow of it. Gonna try later though. :)

Huw Evans (dochuw) | 58 comments I bought the Duh Vinci Code - thought it truly awful, but so awful it was almost funny; at least the authour was honest enough to admit that he was going for the mass market
My worst purchase was An Equal Music; bears no resemblance to any musicians I have ever met. I'm not sure it bears any resemblance to any human beings I have ever met either.

message 126: by [deleted user] (new)

I bought some I guess non-fiction book about the knight templars, I believe I will stick with fiction. I didnt finish the book or donate it, I sent it with my paper to be recycled

message 127: by Alpha (new)

Alpha (janomega) | 20 comments Honestly, I haven't read a bad book since I lost the cancer-creating emotions that are associative to branding anything bad. Overall, despite what you may think, there will always be someone out there that loves what you may hate.

Now if you say, book that took longer than usual for me to finish because of flow, I am going to say A Lion Among Men (Wicked Years, #3) by Gregory Maguire . I like the Wicked Years Series but this book took longer than usual for me to finish.

message 128: by Huw (new)

Huw Evans (dochuw) | 58 comments One man's Picasso is another man's flying ducks, I guess. Not sure there is such a thing as a truly bad book, just ones where the reality fails to meet the expectation.

Janet (justjanet) | 25 comments Kaput wrote: "The Kite Runner - the worst fifty pence I've ever spent."

Omigosh, the Kite Runner may well be the best book I've ever read. I bought it and it lay around the house forever because I thought it was going to be a boring political story. When I finally picked it up I read straight through, stopping only for food, sleep and bathroom breaks. I found it mesmerizing.

message 138: by Marsha (new)

Marsha | 14 comments Oh, for me it was The Pillars of the Earth (The Pillars of the Earth, #1) by Ken Follett . I tried and tried to like this book - I even made it half way through before I finally gave up. And, if any of you have ever read it, you know that was quite a few pages given that the book is something like 500 pages (if it wasn't, it sure felt like it).

message 139: by [deleted user] (new)

I loved that book. I have read it several times. I just started to watch the mini series but I hate to see changes made to excellent books

message 140: by Huw (last edited Dec 08, 2011 02:53PM) (new)

Huw Evans (dochuw) | 58 comments Sorry Tammy, I have to agree with Marsha. I completed it tho' and have reviewed it, not terribly kindly. I am much more used to Follett as an excellent spy fiction writer so this was a completely retro book in my persepctive. I am delighted that you enjoyed it so much - probably enough for both of us. The history is excellent and accurate, however. Did you try the follow on? Do let me know what you thought.

I normally read historical fiction so thats probably why I liked it so much. I did read the seaquil it was good but not nearly as good as the first book.

Tracey (stewartry) Barry wrote: "anything by, whatever by means, Stephen King"

Is that the sort of "haven't-read-him-and-never-will" snobbery I used to suffer from, or have you read and hated King? I always thought of him as a completely schlocky pulp writer - till I read On Writing; that made me a fan. And then The Stand blew me away.

Rosalie Sambuco The worst book I bought was THE POSTMISTRESS. It had so much positive hype I just had to read it. Boy was I disappointed!!! I made myself finish the book thinking something would tie everything together. Wrong!!! The book was such a disappointment.

JC Finch (Finchopotamus) | 14 comments Moby Dick.

I don't care what ANYONE says I hated it so much.

It may be tied with Scarlet Letter though. Those two are worse than any indie book I've ever read... and I've read some pretty terrible indie (and mainstream) books.

Twilight would be on my list if I could get past the first page. The lack of artistic style makes my brain hurt.

JC, since you have read Moby Dick already, you might be interested in this new book that just came out,
Why Read Moby-Dick? by Nathaniel Philbrick. I enjoyed Moby Dick when I read it, but I must say reading this other book I learned some things about Moby Dick that got me to enjoy it a bit more. You might too, and it is a relatively quick read, also.

message 150: by Stefani (new)

Stefani Robinson (steffiebaby140) After reading this one... Flirt (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter #18) by Laurell K. Hamilton , I really wanted to give myself a lobotomy just to make the pain stop. I had been disenchanted with Hamilton for awhile but that was the single most asinine and ridiculous piece of fiction I have ever read. That book got her banned from my bookshelf forever.
