15 Point Tasks
15.2 - Stars And Stripes Forever
The Colorado Kid by Stephen King
AND
Hell Gate by Linda Fairstein (New York)
I love this author. This is # 12 in the Alex Cooper series. Each one of the 12 deserves ★★★★★'s.
15.5 - "The Great Authors Were Great Readers, And One Way To Understand Them Is To Read The Books They Read." — Mortimer J. Adler
My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult
AND
The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger
15.7 - "You Must Be The Change You Want To See In The World."
Life of Pi by Yann Martel
I didn't think this book deserved all the hype that it has gotten. Maybe I just didn't "get it"
One of the things I would like to see done in my area (and which I have participated in) is river cleanup. I live on the Mississippi River and it is totally disgusting the way people just dump their junk in the river. Every year there is an extreme cleanup weekend organized to help cleanup the river and the shores along the river. I hate litter! We have to appreciate and protect the earth we have because so quickly it can be taken away as the people in the oil spill area well know.
20 Point Tasks
20.4 - Always The Bridesmaid, Never The Bride - Shelley's Task - Anniversary Gift
This is my second challenge so my gift would be 2nd - Cotton or China
The Quilter's Apprentice by Jennifer Chiaverini
This task was WAY to EASY for me. As a quilter I use nothing but 100 % cotton fabric, batting and thread in my quilts. I have just recently finished 2 quilts as wedding presents.

These days, I bring something cool for the hot, hot, hot summer! I love sangria! (this is a good thing to bring when I do NOT have to drive home!) If I do, I indulge my flirtation with veganism and bring quinoa with basil, olive oil and roasted pine nuts, thanks to Alicia Silverstone and the Kind Diet (which I read for the previous challenge!)
B I read Lunch in Paris

and D Women, Food and God

I am a #1. Elizabeth Moon is also a 1 so I read The Speed of Dark
The characteristics of #1 are: Initiating action, pioneering, leading, independent, attaining, individual. For this part I read The God Engines by John Scalzi. He is a Goodreads author.
Captain Tephe has these same qualities as the captain of his vessel and also being a spiritual leader (of sorts). Yet he is also independent in his view of the the events going on. He initiates action frequently during the book. I think he fits this description perfectly.

For me, I don't know if I'd put this book on a "must read" list...maybe a "really should read" list. It's a story about a double murder committed by two fundamentalist Mormons. The book mixes the story of the crime with a pretty detailed history of Mormonism. It's a very interesting and compelling story, and Kraukauer paints a vivid picture of how fundamentalist beliefs contributed to the crime. So maybe it's a must read for anyone who is interested in true crime/history/religion combinations.

Rebecca is one of my all time favorite books. I read this for the first time at probably 12 years old and have re-read it at least twice since. Definitely a ★★★★★ book.
For New and Borrowed I read The Summer Hideaway (Lakeshore Chronicles, # 7) by Susan Wiggs Goodreads author
This was a nice 2010 romance and reconciliation novel that I borrowed from the library (as I do all my books). I had not read any Susan Wiggs before but will seek out more books by this author.

Miss Read books are so entertaining and nice reads.

I liked this book a lot! I actually liked the whole series but this book in particular. All teh more obvious conflicts are concluded by the time this book starts and in this book the anlikely characters become antagonists and that keeps readers on their toes! Plus a hot boy! It did start of kind of repetitive and slow, but then picks up in the second half and is great from then on!
This book is also over 750 pages.

For my must read book, I chose The Hobbit: or There and Back Again by J.R.R. Tolkien. Why I chose a fantasy classic relates to a conversation I had with my 19 year old son this weekend about classics and genre fiction that transcends its genre. I was trying to explain my passion for many of the ‘classics’ and why I loved them. To me, a classic is not some book that scholarly, old, white men decided upon but rather a book that captures its audience. So many of the great classics are fantastic stories with real people, whose emotions, loves, dreams, fears and family relationships might reflect their culture and time period but are also above it and can easily relate to a modern reader. One of my most beloved books which I have both read and listened to 3 times is The Iliad, and my favorite scene in that story, and perhaps in all literature, is when Andromache was tearfully pleading with her husband Hector to not go fight and make a widow of her. After defending his actions he reached out to hold his baby son who cowered, fearful of his father. Both parents laughed and Hector then took off his huge helmet which was the cause of his son’s fear and the baby then went welcomingly to his father who “took up his son and kissed him, dandled him in his arms.” Though written almost three thousand years ago, how can anyone not relate to the emotions of these characters? We read of Elizabeth Bennet’s embarrassment of her mother’s actions, Jane Eyre’s heartbreak on her wedding day, Dr. Frankenstein’s fear and horror of his creation and even the greed of power from Orwell’s pigs. These stories are classics because they are stories, wonderful stories that are interesting, exciting and full of characters that are timeless. This is why they remain in publication and popularity after many years. Not every ‘classic’ will appeal to every person, and many are unreadable tomes, but so many more endure and this is why I believe in the reading and exploration of these stories and this is what I wanted to try to teach my son.
Next we were talking about genre literature but with both books and movies that transcends their particular genre. This whole conversation about books began in the car when I was going to listen to another one of my favorite novels, The Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad. I was trying to introduce the story to my son who had heard of the book but never read it. He also, as I found out, had never seen Apocalypse Now although he has always wanted to and was intrigued to find out that it was based on a book set in an entirely different time period. Some genre books and movies transcend their genre and create a crossover that lets someone who might avoid horror actually enjoy reading say Frankenstein or watching The Shining. I am not an expert in genre fiction. I tend to read just about anything well written. I also avoid following trends. This is why I did not read Tolkien or other authors like Douglas Adams, Anne Rice until I was an adult, far later than any of my peers and friends were reading them. I am still the same way. I will never buy a new hardback, not necessarily because of the price and not because I am not looking forward to the book, but I guess it is more of an independence and desire to read, watch and do things on my own time, not some marketer’s schedule. There is nothing that can turn me off a desire to read a book now then it being on the bestseller list. To complicate or simplify this feeling (not sure which), I majored in marketing and work in that field! But, I come to many of those books, shows, movies, etc. later once the hype is mostly passed and sometimes find the hype was justified, and that is ok. But, by this time, I can judge how much I enjoyed or disliked the book, show, movie, etc. on my own terms without some of the pressure.
So, I first read and listened to Tolkien about 10-12 years ago, before the movies came out and found I loved the books for the stories and the characters. I read some fantasy when younger, particularly loving the Xanth series by Piers Anthony, but not much for some time other then the books I read to my son when he was younger. The Hobbit, as everyone probably knows, would I guess be described as the prequel to the Lord of the Rings trilogy. It is a charming story, comedic, sometimes dark, and full of fascinating creatures and characters. I am not a great reviewer and do not feel I can do justice to a book that many will already be familiar with. But, I would put this on any must read list even if you abhor fantasy. This is a fantasy classic, but completely transcends any attempt to classify it solely in the fantasy genre. I am also looking forward to when the 2 movies based on the book come out in the next 2-3 years!
Sorry for the length of this post!

My review
And here's a shorter version in case the link doesn't work:
It's a light-hearted Georgian romp about a very immature young lady who convinces a very rich Earl that he should offer for her instead of for her beautiful older sister; she's actually doing this out of love of her sister, who loves an army captain but was going to Sacrifice herself in a Marriage of Convenience to get the family out of the mess their brother created with his gambling.

I read The Girl Who Chased the Moon , which I thoroughly enjoyed. Sarah Addison Allen is a Goodreads author, so I'd like to claim a ticket.
10.6 Read a book in which someone faces discrimination.
I read Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix , which I also thoroughly enjoyed--for the fifth time or so. =) This book is over 750 pages, so I'd like to claim a big books ticket.
15.3 Read a book that has been featured on your favorite blog and post a review.
I read The Dogs of Babel , which was reviewed here on literatehousewife.com.
I selected this book for my book club discussion earlier this month, and all of us were pretty disappointed. The Dogs of Babel is about a man whose wife has died after a fall from an apple tree in their yard. The police say she fell on accident, but her husband wonders if she actually committed suicide. You see, he's finding some inconsistencies around the house that suggest she knew what was going to happen to her that day. The husband, as narrator, takes us through his life since he met Lexy, his wife. She's the epitome of manic-depressive, at times so utterly full of life that no one can keep up with her, and at other times so down in the dumps that you wonder how she managed to make it this long without committing suicide.
While trying to puzzle out what he comes to see as Lexy's "clues" for him, Paul looks to their dog, Lorelei, the only witness to Lexy's fall. The book takes a strange turn when Paul becomes determined to teach Lorelai how to speak so that she can tell him what happened that day. Paul falls in with a really wrong gang of rebels who do unspeakable things to dogs in an effort to make them speak; this part of the story alone made me wish I had never picked up this book. Anyway, the novel's characters aren't very relatable, and everything is quite high drama. I wasn't impressed.

20.7 Villain's point of view: I read Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay. Actually, I listened to the audiobook version. Very well done, but I can't say that I liked the ending much.
20.9 Independant Spirit: I read Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins and watched (500) Days of Summer. Loved the book - the movie gave me a headache... but was interesting in an experimental film sort of way.

15.7 Honoring Ghandi's first act of civil disobedience
The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy
Like Linda, I'd like to see more listening in political discussions with less hate and prejudice. I vote for people who listen and care about people plus I try to understand other people's views and positions.
