It was certainly sappy, but Linger was WORSE. I felt like I was swimming in syrup!

I had never heard of this series until I joined this group. I saw everyone talking about them and thought I would give them a try. I am so happy I did, they are soo good! I have read them all and it is about to kill me waiting on the new one to come out!:-)

I just finished it tonight. I really liked it. The only thing I didn't like was what happened with Grace and Sam... that's all I'll say since I try not to spoil things for people. It just seemed, like overkill after the first book...

Brittany Leake (brittdragonlady) | 15 comments Of course Edward...I made fun of him for years, then when i actually read Twilight...how can you not be infatuated with him?! He's the man every girl dreams about!

Someone earlier said Nawat and Numair...I have to second that. They're the best!

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments You might not want to ask me that question because I couldn't stand him (or Twilight really, but he was a big part of why).

Haha it's ok. He actually got on my nerves sometimes when I reread the books recently, because I was able to look at him more objectively and see that he was sometimes pretty controlling. You should read Evermore if you haven't. The girl is really kick ass and totally doesn't depend on the guy for anything. I loved it.

I was trying really hard to let the Edward comment go, so glad someone beat me to the punch! If you want a brooding personality go for Mr. Darcy in Pride & Prejudice, he is much better than the angsty Edward!

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments I thought he was more that a little controlling and he used the same excuse every abuser does - that it was for her own good. I just worry about teenage girls who are so impressionable. Most will be fine but some are easily ifluences.

I haven't read Evermore and I'm not sure why. I'll see if the library has it. I prefer my female heroes a lot more like Tamora Pierce writes them.

The guys I listed are all actually with very strong female leads. Alanna, Katniss & Alexia (though Lord Maccon has his moments that I'd probably smack him. Fortunately Alexia has a parasol just for that purpose).

I liked Edward in book 1 and 2, in book 3 he started getting on my nerves and in book 4 I couldn't stand him! To be honest, I didn't like the fourth book at all...

message 171: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Jessica no need to feel bad being honest. Breaking Dawn was horrid.

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments I read the first 3 that's why I feel like I'm allowed to have a strong opinion...it's an educated opinion. But I couldn't make myself read the 4th.

I read all four of them for some reason!

Terry (Ter05 TwiMoms/ MundieMoms) (ter05) | 374 comments Funny, this morning I got an e-mail from a friend who is not a big reader and definitely not in the loop about Twilight discussions. She just finished the series at my suggestion and said Breaking Dawn is her favorite. Different strokes......

message 175: by [deleted user] (new)

For me Breaking Dawn was a huge dissapointment compared to the other three books. But the more books i read, the more i think that twilight wasnt that great afterall..

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments The twilight series is a bit like a sugar high. You may like it at first but afterwards you kinda get a headache and you consumed a lot of empty calories. I didn't really have a problem until I stopped and thought about the books afterwards. And even though I'd read them (and quickly) I realized that I really didn't like them.

[I know this isn't everyones experience]

message 177: by Jaimie (new)

Jaimie (jaimier) | 1275 comments It's funny because I loved all of the Twilight books - including Breaking Dawn - when I first read them and reread them before any of the movies came out. Now I think the movies have started to turn me against them a bit and especially Breaking Dawn. I just know it is going to be a horible movie and make me cringe the entire time. That is kind of why I don't want any more of my favorite books made to movies.

Terry (Ter05 TwiMoms/ MundieMoms) (ter05) | 374 comments I so agree with you, Jaimie. I read the books over and over (the first 3) in 2007 and devoured BD when it came out. I have enjoyed the movie experience because of the many great friends I have gotten totally through TwilightMoms, but I love my book Edward before I ever saw RP and before people started tearing apart everything he did or said. I am getting to the point where I would prefer my beloved books remain books only. I'll watch a MI movie only if Alex Pettyfer plays Jace and don't think would chance watching an Outlander movie because no one could play Jamie.

message 179: by [deleted user] (new)

Love the books, love the movies, love the whole Twilight experience. My girlfriends and I make a big night out when one of the movies is released. Twilight has been a really fun thing for me.

message 180: by Jaimie (new)

Jaimie (jaimier) | 1275 comments Shannen - are you not scared about how they are going to make BD? Reading about what happens and watching it on a the big screen are two very different things. I don't know maybe it wont be so bad. Eclipse was way better than the first two.

Terry (Ter05 TwiMoms/ MundieMoms) (ter05) | 374 comments With Twilight, one of the great things, as you say Shannen, is the whole experience of sharing something you love with so many people of a like mind. It also has been finding groups like this who love many of the same books, whether they like Twilight or not. I wouldn't be on here if not for Twilight, would not have met so many great people at TwiCon...just would not have as many friends who I share other things with. Twilight opened doors to so many other fun things and people - and gave my family a common fun thing to talk about and do. It's more than a book series.

message 182: by Becca (new)

Becca | 1608 comments Cassi, I loved that you compared it to a sugar high! lol! I think my opinion on Twilight is known, but just for conversation sake, I was never infatuated with either Edward or Jacob. I thought they were both controlling and downright idiots for liking (much less loving) someone like Bella. *shrug*

Jaimie wrote: "Shannen - are you not scared about how they are going to make BD? Reading about what happens and watching it on a the big screen are two very different things. I don't know maybe it wont be so bad...."

The thing I'm worried about most is how they are going to make it into two movies, especially when the ending wasn't very climactic. Movies are never as good as books so I never have high expectations. I always go into it with the thought that they can't fit everything in that I think is important and they might add stuff. I saw something last night online that they are trying "seal the deal" for an unknown girl to play Renesmee and it showed a picture of her. I guess we'll see what happens.

It's hilarious, everything you say fits how I feel. They are like fictional crack, you're addicted as you read them but when you're over your 'fix' you realize how awful they were.

I liked Edward but I could recognize how controling he was, but worse then that was watching Bella destroy herself for him. She didnt care about anyone else, or even herself, all she cared about was dying so she could be with him forever and be 'beautiful' enough for him. It was a terrible awful story for impressionistic young women.

Terry (Ter05 TwiMoms/ MundieMoms) (ter05) | 374 comments I think probably the majority of books are bad for impressionable young women. They aren't written for those who can't enjoy fiction for what it is and stay grounded in real life. My granddaughters are all very level headed, realize that Edward and Jacob too are totally make believe as well as all the other much crazier YA books they are reading. But they are aware that fiction is not real life and not to be treated as such.

I agree completely, I find that unhealthy relationships a lot in books. Something extra struck me in this series though, perhaps it was her wanting death that struck me hard.

My nieces tend to be level headed too, but they still swoon over Edward and think that Bella wanting to spend her life with him as a Vampire was 'romantic'. And even if they clearly understand that it's just fiction, I would still prefer them to read and swoon over strong characters (like Katniss) versus weak ones like Bella.

Though I'm absolutely against censorship, lol, so mostly it's just me waxing philosophical. I just use opportunities (since I relate to them with the YA Lit) I can find to press on them strong willed female characters and discuss books with them at every opportunity. In fact, my niece was at her first College Woman's studies class and they were discussing poor female role models in modern literature and the teacher brought up Bella, and she emailed me to tell me that she thought of me the whole time and how I told them to recognize Bella for what she was... I was thrilled that she heard a lecture on it that came from school and not from her 'nagging' Aunt.

See, I thought The Hunger Games was terrible for young impressionable kids to read. The whole concept of kids killing kids and having to have a deep realization that your friends and people you respected must die if you are to live was not a good concept for kids to be considering. Young impressionable kids DO kill kids in real life and the whole emotional ride of the story seemed a bit much for a kid who might be just a little so inclined.

For sure, but I guess that is another topic to me. I wouldn't say The Hunger Games (which I'm only reading now) or Gone would be a good series for readers younger then 17. They are exceptionally violent. I was just meaning in terms of strong female characters.

I don't like the two movie idea because the first half of BD was pretty uneventful. They get married, they have boring sex, and she lays on a couch while pregnant. Yes, the birth might be interesting, but if that's the only interesting scene in the movie before it cuts off...meh.

Terry (Ter05 TwiMoms/ MundieMoms) (ter05) | 374 comments The stuff with Jacob is kind of cool. I am sure the time on Esme Island will be all beautiful and stuff. The pregnancy is not beautiful or cool in the books but maybe they can use more of the Jacob/Rosalie interaction and such and gloss over Bella and Edward in that part...hopefully. Time will tell.

Actually it's not a new series. It's been out since 2007, I just didn't know until now. :) I'm slow on the uptake.

Brittany (finally graduated and can once again read for fun) | 1328 comments I know I'm late coming into this conversation, but whoever compared Twilight and sugar and crack I definitely agree with. Kuddos to you for putting it into words. Because try as I might, I can't put her put down, but afterwards all I can think is... why? I'll even admit to enjoying Bree Tanner and The Host. But I can't for the life of me figure out what it is that draws me in.
