My favorite is The Boy Next Door The Boy Next Door (Boy, #1) by Meg Cabot because it was just funny and entertaining all the way through. It was written as emails only. I also enjoyed The Queen of Babble books.

I definitely need a comfort read to bring me out of a sad mood. I'm off to shuffle through the suggestions.

So what's everyone up to today? Any recent aquisitions you'd like to share?

message 356: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Hi Lee. Hope Maggie is better!

I had to use some expiring miles I cannot use and was able to get a $50 B & N gift card, so I'm waiting for The Vegan Table: 200 Unforgettable Recipes for Entertaining Every Guest for Every Occasion, Vegan Soul Kitchen: Fresh, Healthy, and Creative African-American Cuisine, which might end up being comfort books; I'll have to wait until I read the to see, and 3 other books that may or may not be comfort books. I'll post after I've read them if they are.

I know. I was thrilled. It's the only way I would shop right now, and I love book shopping!!!

Well, I was just going through my husband's junk drawer trying to find something and discovered an unused Amazon giftcard for $35. He said that I could have it to use for my Kindle. Yay!

What a score!!! I hope you find something to lift your mood Christine. Wooohoooo!

Paula | 184 comments My latest box of books arrived a few days ago:

Whose Body?
The Strangely Beautiful Tale of Miss Percy Parker
I Capture the Castle
North and South
Soulless
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

Not sure which of these will end up as 'comfort reads' but there are certainly some 'guilty pleasures' in there!

Soulless and The Strangely Beautiful Tale... were both acquired because Boof secured interviews with the authors, and their talks made me very interested in buying the books. The interviews are posted on the Victorians group site in case anyone is interested.

Hope you find something for the Kindle that helps your mood, Christine!! If nothing else, at least it's free! :)

Oooh, what a lovely bundle of books Paula. You are in for a treat! I just finished Soulless this morning and North and South is going to be my next Victorian read.

I'm saving it to order the new Harlan Coben book when it comes out. I started reading this memoir, and it is definitely a "cheer you up" read. All the Fishes Come Home to Roost: An American Misfit in India All the Fishes Come Home to Roost An American Misfit in India by Rachel Manija Brown

I can't believe it's Sunday! Where did Saturday go? I'm waiting for the grocery guy to come, and then I have laundry, I have to go to the gym (promised hubby I'd go with him, now I'm kicking myself), I have to try and help Dixie pick out a scary dog nickname to intimidate the new neighbor's dog, and Emma has swim team practice. I'm going to try to squeeze reading into all of those activities somehow.

Aren't you smart having your groceries delivered. Do you like the service? I've always wondered about that. It seems to take up the entire afternoon when we do the shopping on a Saturday.

message 366: by Mary (new)

I actually do it now because it keeps me on my budget. The quality is very good, and I can watch exactly how much I am spending as I add to my cart. They take coupons and they give a lot of incentives too. The other good thing is that I can change what is on my order until about 12 hours beforehand.

Do you buy produce from them as well? Do they offer organic items? It is probably a very good way to keep you from picking up those in-store random grabs I always waste money on.

message 372: by [deleted user] (new)

Yes, and they'll refund my money if I'm not happy with something (like if the bananas are too ripe, whatever). I can get organics. The only time that I go to the store now is if I decide that I want to make something last minute and have to have it before my delivery day. I was the WORST impulse shopper so this saves me about $40 a trip.

message 373: by Paula (new)

Paula | 184 comments I would love to do grocery delivery, but fiance seems to consider grocery shopping as one of his favorite entertainments. We go up and down every aisle, and I consider it a small victory when we successfully avoid an aisle. I mean really, why do we need to go down the greeting card aisle? :)

message 374: by Lee, Mod Mama (new)

Lee (leekat) | 3959 comments Mod
Paula, he probably hates the thought of missing something if he doesn't check every aisle. I like grocery shopping when I'm alone but doing it with the family is kind of stressful. Maybe you should send him to do the shopping by himself and then you can sneak in some reading time alone too! That way, you both get to enjoy what you like. :-)

message 375: by Paula (new)

Paula | 184 comments I've thought of that, but cringe at what he would come back with :) He also doesn't like to go alone for the larger trips. Besides, those moments when he asks if he can get something (as he is not sure if it is too fattening) and I say 'yes' or 'no' are kind of funny for us. Might be the only thing for which we ask each other 'permission.' :)

Didn't mean for my earlier statement to sound like a complaint, more a random commentary.

message 376: by Lee, Mod Mama (new)

Lee (leekat) | 3959 comments Mod
Oh no, you didn't sound like you were complaining. I thought it was funny. No worries Paula. :-)
The grocery store (and the bookstore!) seems to bring out the naughty side of my nature. I'm always wanting treats too. It's very hard to resist.

message 377: by [deleted user] (new)

My husband is the worst impulse shopper in the grocery store! He always finds some new treat or insists that we are out of something!

I shop at my local natural foods co-op, and I admit that I go for the socialization. I would miss talking to the people at the store. I don't think I would enjoy online shopping as much, even though it would save me money.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 529 comments I really think the only place where I am more dangerous than a yarn shop (I knit) is the bookstore.

I think I may be able to one-up you here. My husband is even a dangerous impulse shopper when I order online. I don't want him walking in when I am ordering because he'll start using the "browse the aisles" feature..the next thing I know my virtual cart is full of impulse buys.

Thought I'd update you on my checklist here (I can tell that you are all holding your breath with excitement)...
The grocery guy came (check), I did three loads of laundry (check), and I went to the gym (check)...now I have to read and work on Dixie's nickname before swim team.

Paula | 184 comments I have to admit, I signed up for Facebook but have seriously dropped my participation once I joined GR. I don't really need the drama on FB and never thought myself much of a social network-er. Now, I can't stop myself from checking GR throughout the day but find it much more enjoyable than FB!!! It's just nice to find people who I can relate to better.

Has anyone else given up or seriously reduced activity on another "social network" site?

P.S. - For you knitters out there, I covet your skill. I've tried a few times but never get the knack of it. Some day, I will complete a knitting project with the end result being an identifiable object! :)

I cut way back on FB, just relations and a few friends (21 total) because I was online too much. Now I am on GR all the time, just like you are. I enjoy this a lot more than than invites to Farmville!

message 390: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) I'm on facebook but rarely do anything with it. I have 27 friends, I think, including a few people I stay in contact with because of it. But, I spend 90% of my online time on Goodreads.

message 391: by Darkpool (new)

Darkpool | 222 comments I'm still addicted to facebook, I admit. It's actually the only way to keep up with what some of my friends are doing! It serves quite a different function to goodreads for me.

For me too Darkpool... it's the place where all of the people I know are in one place, not just the "Bookies". It's one-stop and I can check in on everyone. I'm more 'hit-and-run', really. I send a few messges and make a few comments, then I'm back here.

Since discovering Goodreads a couple of years ago, my facebook time has dropped to checking in about once every two weeks if that. I just don't find it interesting anymore. Goodreads has everything I love and I've made such good friends HERE who share my passion for reading that I wouldn't care if facebook disappeared forever.

message 394: by [deleted user] (new)

I do like using Facebook for sharing photos. It's nice to get instant Christmas and wedding photos from the family.

But, I like my GR friends very much. :)

Hi Christine! I saw your note and thought maybe the book I am currently reading might help lift your spirits. It is called "A Guide to the Birds of East Africa" by Nicholas Drayson. It is a delightful light-weight but very engaging book about a middle aged man in Kenya who is sickly in love with the lady who leads his birdwatching group and how he and another 'interloper' vie for the right to invite her to the local ball by engaging in a bird-sighting competition. It is very fun and interesting and is teaching me a great deal about Kenya and the unexpected pleasure of bird watching. Perhaps you would find it engaging as well. In any event, I hope you find something to give you a boost! Sandy Thomson

Hey Lee, How are you? It seems like ages since I've sent you a note although I see all your nice communications here in CR. I'm en route to Miami for a few weeks. Getting out of that chilly Northeast.... as I'm sure you've noted either through experiencing it or seeing it on the news..... don't know how far north the chill has settled in.... Anyway, I have acquired and been given TONS of new books and am plowing my way slowly through them. A friend of mine works for Algonquin Press in N.C. and so she sent me on my way with a half dozen or so interesting new titles. That visit was preceded by several afternoons in 'Politics and Prose' a fantastic bookstore in D.C. where I spent way too much and not enough money on a scad of 'remainder shelf' books (and a few not 'remainder' titles....). So, I'm set for the next twenty years from the look of my car.... probably using more gas as a result! goodness, the hidden expenses of my obsession mount! Anyway, I hope you and maggie and your guy are really well and happy and not suffering the vagaries of winter too much! Lots of love, Sandy

Sandy, the chill has definitely made it up here. After an unseasonably mild December and half of January we are now experiencing the payback!
I'm glad to hear you have received a carload of new books to enjoy. As always I look forward to your comments. We are all pretty well, my little one is suffering from some sort of intestinal problem which I thought was over and has reappeared. I won't go into detail here because it's kind of gross - LOL!
I hope you have a great time in Miami. I'm jealous.....
