Roseann | 59 comments A little moving as my assonance rhyme did not count and finished a couple more books…

3.10--THE RUNNING MAN by MICHAEL GERARD BAUER (294 pgs.)

Part magical realism, part horror this story tells of a boy who is haunted by nightmares of the titular character. When he is asked to draw a portrait of the elusive brother of his neighbor, he is forced to face his fear and ultimately understand them.

&

4.20--VAMPS by NANCY A COLLINS (235 pgs)

I'm a big fan of Collins' adult vampire novels and this one for the YA audience did not disappoint. The Old Bloods are unhappy when a new Young Blood enters their private school. I look forward to reading more in this series.

Along with…

TIGER EYES by Judy Blume (217 pgs.)

Another true to life story from Ms. Blume. Davey’s father is shot dead in a convenience store robbery and has to learn how to deal with the loss of someone near and dear. Her trip to Los Alamos with her mother and brother also open her eyes to prejudice and teenage drinking. I wish I had read Judy Blume when I was a teenager!

And finally,

1.15--THIRTEENTH CHILD by Patricia Wrede

Story set in an alternative United States where magic exists. Along with hocus pocus type magic comes that magic of numbers and being the 13th child is one of the worst things to be. Eff and her family move to the outskirts of civilization so that she will not be found out and the family shunned for her inevitable ruin as a 13th Child. In the outskirts Eff finds hope through the teachings of an understanding witch who helps her to believe that being 13th can also be a good thing.

This book was nominated, but not chosen, for the January read. I am torn as to far as recommendations are concerned as I thought the premise was very good, but the outcome left something to be desired. It seemed that too often plots were started, but never found fruition. I wish that Wrede had brought the Rationalist’s and their alternate village with no magic allowed into the book much sooner as I felt that is where the story really picked up, but I really had to fight to keep reading this one, So I'd say no to a group read.

Lydia (loverofinformation) | 596 comments 3.05 Becoming Me, 248 pgs.

I wish someone had recommended this book for the last reading challenge when I was looking for a Christian genre book (the only task I did not fulfill). This was much more readable. However, I still found something that just does not appeal to me in this genre.

Lydia (loverofinformation) | 596 comments Whoo-hoo! It's the day before Ground Hog's Day and just 2 weeks until we recognize the leader who will develop the 50-point task! If you are in the lead (ignore my name since I am not eligible for any award), it is time to start thinking about what you might pose as the final task. The preference is that your task embody the theme of the challenge and involve the reading of 3-4 books.

Today's Tally:

Roseann 180 points 4048 pages

Lydia 135 points 3195 pages
Diana 110 points 3206 pages
Angela Sunshine 105 points 2322 pages

Eve 60 points 1190 pages
Maria 50 points 1190 pages
Maria 50 points 1604 pages
Heather 50 points 1464 pages
Cathy 50 points 1336 pages
Valerie 45 points 1418 pages
