Did I mention my one and only fantasy book, 3037? I was calling it a science fiction fantasy, but people who like science fiction hated it and people who hate science fiction love it. I know it is metaphysical in a way because it is filled with metaphors, which I did on purpose. If you read it, please let me know which category it should go in.

Peter (74765525) | 16 comments Fantasy Writers: I have some questions that perhaps some of you can answer:

1) What's the size of the fantasy audience in English? in other languages? (Another way of putting that question is how many fantasy books (print and digital) sold in 2008, 2009, 2010 &/or 2011?)

2) How many new fantasy titles have been published each year on average for the past 5 years?

3) What percentage of fantasy titles were self-published during the past 5 years?

4) What's your best definition of "fantasy," or other than how the publisher labels a book, how can you tell if it's a fantasy title?

5) How do you break down fantasy in terms of sub-genres? Example: young adult fantasy, vampire fantasy, fairie (fairy) fantasy?

Looking forward to responses.

message 409: by Stephen (new)

Stephen Pearl (stephenp11) | 272 comments Hi Peter,

I can’t help much with the hard stats but the definition is an interesting question. To answer it you almost have to break fantasy down into its sub Generas. At a go I’d say “Literature of the fantastic where technical explanation is secondary to effect within the fictional world.” It’s not a perfect explanation as there are many examples of modern fantasy where an explanation for how magic works is given. My own Modern Fantasy detective story Nukekubi being a case in point but even there the fact that the spell works is dramatically more important than how it works.
As to the numbers for self publishing. Just from going to the SFcons and being in the community I think there has been a massive upswing in the numbers of self published books across all generas and fantasy is no exception. Fantasy does seem to be taking more of the spotlight lately. Frankly it is getting harder and harder to write science fiction because it keeps turning into science fact.

Hey Peter, Like Stephen I can't be of any use to you facts wise. Although, for me, an avid fantasy reader, I know it's a fantasy novel by it's cover. The titles usually arn't very clicky so I don't know it's Fantasy from the title. Although if I look at the cover I usually can tell it's a fantasy novel.

Tanya (tkgough) | 16 comments Peter,

You can find some data on the scifi and fantasy market here http://www.simbainformation.com/about...

They're saying that scifi/fantasy represents 6% of the total market, or $578.6 million in sales.

See the article for more details. All figures are for the US market.

message 413: by Peter (new)

Peter (74765525) | 16 comments Tanya: Thank you. Although a year old that report indicates fantasy is growing with more titles coming out each year. Although there's no breakdown between self-published and traditionally published, I suspect a considerable number of new titles are self-published. So, my next question is if you are a fantasy fiction writer, how do you propose to succeed in a highly competitive market?

message 414: by Tanya (new)

Tanya (tkgough) | 16 comments That's easy, Peter. Write a brilliant fantasy novel, publish it, mobilize my extensive army of faeries, elves and sprites to blanket the earth and whisper desire for it into people's ears as they sleep.

Isn't that how everyone does it?

Darius Jones Hi, All.

My name is Darius Jones and I have just published my first novel. It is The Library of Lost Books.

It's kind of a mash up of fantasy fiction and literary fiction. If you love stories with ancient tomes and lost manuscripts, it's for you.

It's about a library in which all the great lost books (think Babylonian tablets, Love's Labor Won, etc.) are gathered. In the tale, Darius is sucked into the world and soon realizes he--along with some librarians he meets--is responsible for saving the world.

I hope you read it, give it a review and friend me.

Thank You and Happy Reading,

Darius

Angel’s Kiss is the story of Alexandria Hayes-Lewis. Lexie, as she likes to be called, is blessed with the perfect life. By day she manages her family’s detective agency in Seravan, the beautiful beach town where she was born and raised. By night she makes certain her devilishly handsome husband knows just how much she loves him.

Lexie never knew she’d been marked at birth by an Angel's Kiss—until one ordinary case turned deadly.

A brutal attack awakens a deeply hidden family legacy: a superhuman strength and vitality. Not only is she stronger—her gift can intensify the strength and power of immortal beings. With the secrets of her heritage unlocked, and her legacy revealed, Lexie becomes the prey.

Terrified by changes she doesn’t understand and sensual nightmares she can’t control, Lexie desperately searches for ways to harness the power flowing through her veins. But when people die and her family is threatened, she takes the ultimate step against those who want to shield her, those who want to possess her, and those who want to kill her. In a frantic bid for freedom, she enlists the help of an unusual guardian and an ancient weapon.

David Katzman (daviddavid) Hello all,

I'm listing my book here because Fantasy is the closest genre I can use to describe my new novel; however, A Greater Monster does not fit neatly into any genre. It is not Fantasy in any typical sense, although it does feature numerous mythologically inspired characters. It is closer to a fantastical fairytale than the fantasy genre. How would you categorize Alice in Wonderland?

I'm also an experimental writer and enjoying pushing the boundaries of what has been done in fiction. A Greater Monster features graphic design and 65 full-page illustrations along with other unusual elements woven into the story.

GR Giveaway until August 16 here: http://www.goodreads.com/giveaway/sho...

The narrative follows a nihilistic advertising executive who takes a psychedelic drug that shatters his mind and breaks him through into an alternate reality where genetic material blows like pollen in the wind and humans and animals are constantly hybridizing into unusual and ambiguous forms.

I do not recommend this book to those who prefer straightforward narratives. Also: Rated NC-17.

I was fortunate in that A Greater Monster won a literary award this year: A Gold Medal as "Outstanding Book of the Year" in the 2012 Independent Publisher Book Awards. Please take a look at the reviews on my Goodread's page or Amazon page and see if it's for you.

Erin Zarro | 3 comments Wow, lots of interesting books here!

My first novel, Fey Touched, released on 8/1 through Turtleduck Press. Here's the blurb:

Two sisters.

Asha is the Queen of the Fey, genetically engineered immortal humans who feed on human souls to survive. But she's running from her people. When she is found by her enemy, one of the Hunters of the Fey, she expects to die. Yet he's oddly intrigued by her, and Asha finds herself falling in love with him, hoping she can find safety and the home she's been seeking. Then she's kidnapped, and everything changes.

Fallon is a Hunter. She's looking for her long-lost sister, using an addictive drug to search through the stream of time. Her addiction leaves her dangerously exposed to her enemies but, consumed by her search, she doesn't care...until her fellow Hunters start dying from a mysterious illness. She is torn between duty and desire, and must find an answer before they all die.

What Fallon doesn't know is that Asha might just be the key to saving them all, if only she can find her.

And time is running out.

PLEASE NOTE that this book contains explicit language, explicit sex, and graphic violence and is not suitable for those under 18.

I wanted to combine sci-fi with fantasy, magic with science -- genetic engineering, time travel, etc. There's some romance in it, and some elements of horror as well. I'm so excited to have my book out there, not just in my head anymore. ;)

David Nova (davidnova) Season of the Serpent

Hello. My name is David Nova and I'd like to tell you about my fantasy novel, "Season of the Serpent." It's a hybrid of Harry Potter and The X-Files with UFOs, multi-dimensional beings, and a few government conspiracies, a kind of metaphysical Wizard of Oz ... the Garden of Eden story retold in a smart and satirical, contemporary fantasy.

A reviewer writes: "Intelligently written and expertly paced ... a true multidisciplinary feat." Another adds, "His writing style of very high quality that kept me engaged throughout the whole story, as I wanted to keep reading more and more."

In 1982, Paul Venturi is just an average, socially awkward college freshman hiding his extra-terrestrial genesis in the closet, hoping to start a brand new life on campus. Unfortunately, his reemerging telepathy and the shadow of covert government surveillance make fitting in a daunting task. But when an enigmatic Serpent in the guise of a college stoner pressures him to smoke the forbidden weed, Paul is thrust into a mind-bending world of government coverups, esoteric knowledge, and dark conspiracies.

Catapulted over the rainbow, Paul lands in the Astral realm of Yin'Dru where competing factions of immortals are locked in a bitter, cosmic stalemate waging a secret Cold War over the destiny of the human race. A reluctant Paul is cast in the starring role of Adam - a higher sentient human groomed to become their celebrity-messiah. However a sinister faction sees him as the perfect pawn to steer the United States and Soviet Union toward a nuclear Apocalypse.

message 433: by James (new)

James Hampton (jameshampton) | 8 comments Hello! I'm James Hampton and I write mainly contemporary fantasy and science fiction; however, I enjoy all kinds of fiction. Growing up in the 1980s, I was a big fan of anthology shows like Amazing Stories, The Twilight Zone (both original and 80's-era), Tales from the Darkside, Monsters, and similarly formatted programs in which every new episode brought some kind of extaordinary, and quite often otherworldly, surprise. Maybe that surprise was fantastic in nature, or maybe it was delightfully scary or grotesque...it didn't matter either way. What mattered was that the viewer, as a reward for seeing the story all the way through, got a nice jolt at the end.

I like this sort of thing. I like it so much, in fact, that I've tried to engineer a few jolts into my own work, a great deal of which is available for free at the following location: http://www.smashwords.com/profile/vie....
There I'll introduce you to a country pond harboring a deadly secret; to four clocks with the ability to transport their owners to worlds that once were but could never be again; to a thunderstorm feeding on human sadness and the former children's show host who alone holds the key to its defeat; and to a panther that stalks the dark streets of a small town and the still darker avenues of the subconscious mind.

I hope you can stop by.

Cindy Lyle (cindylyle) Hi everyone my name is Cindy Lyle and I would like to promote my novel The Dragon Within. It is a fantasy and suitable for YA.I would love to get some reviews and I can offer free PDF ebooks for who ever would be interested. Here is the overview:

Deep within the mortal world of Eiddoril, war rages and the blood of innocents flows freely. Once ruled by the four elements—Earth, Fire, Water and Air—Eiddoril was a peaceful, beautiful land. Now, after three hundred years of being ravaged by an evil lord and abandoned by their true gods, the people and land of Eiddoril are dying.

In the kingdom of Gareth, an orphan girl is raised as one of the royal family. But when she begins to have vivid nightmares of a past that is not hers, she cannot help but wonder if she is somehow a part of that past. But how? Her questions lead her to Fitch, an old magic user, who helps her discover a shocking truth. Karah is not human, but instead part of a long-forgotten race charged with the responsibility of saving her realm. Armed with a desire to seek the truth, Karah sets out on a dangerous quest to defeat a deadly enemy.

In this fantasy tale, Karah must somehow find the strength to fulfill a destiny that has the potential to forever silence the dragon within. She cannot fail. The future of the world depends on her.

Robert Larrison | 3 comments Long ago and in a land far far away (Dallas, TX) a middle aged writer went to sleep listening to Michael Martin Murphy's "Wildfire." The resulting dream inspired the middle grade books, "Emily's Unicorn" and "Emily's Dragon" by Robert Larrison. His students greeted the stories with wonder, an upsurge of creative writing ensued at the school and all were happy. This old writer has moved on now, concentrating his prose in speculative fiction and contemporary fantasy, longing to find and read stories from authors of like mind. In other words, recommendations would be welcomed from readers on this forum.

Judy Goodwin | 136 comments I have been writing for a long time, although most of my work has been in technical and education writing. I've had short stories published in various magazines and now am working to publish my first novel, which will be coming out in November.

You can find the following short stories and short story collections on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and Smashwords:

Eight Minutes Until the End of the World
It's never a good thing when an alien utters that fateful exclamation, "Oops!" A humorous tale of the end of things. And strawberries. Bonus short story included: The Emergence, a story of a sentient ship who will do anything to protect her beloved captain. Even if it means working with an alien threat.

A Troll Under Golden Gate Bridge
Who knew that deforestation would open up doorways to the realm of the Faerie? And even more so, that fairy-tale monsters would start plaguing America's most prized landmarks? In the humorous short story, "A Troll Under Golden Gate Bridge," special police officer Cathy and her partner Robert have to tackle a super-sized bit of trouble.

Purple Irises
A dream is a powerful thing, Rhona discovers, when her dreams set her on a mission to find a cure for the ailing Thane. She must travel to an ancient ruin to find the 'irises of purple hue.' Worse, she must bring the Thane's young daughter Alura, as the child is intricately tied in with the prophecy. In a land infested with evil spirits set to destroy them, Rhona will need every ounce of her skill as Lightseer to succeed.
