I'm just about to finish THE VIRGINIAN by Owen Wister. Considered the 'first' western by many and the one that brought us the wonderful line, "Smile when you call me that." It seems cliche in parts until you realize that Wister was creating many of those in this book. Why? Simply because I love westerns and have never read it before.

I found STIFF utterly fascinating and certainly made me reconsider my own plans to donate my body to science. I still might, but perhaps with some limits.

I also love westerns- The Virginian was made into a film several times- I prefer the 1946 version, myself - I enjoy Max Brand quite a bit too

I just downloaded some Zane Gray novels for my nook. Looking forward to reading some of those and finishing off several Louis L'Amour paperbacks I picked up at a Library bookstore sale.

Talking of westerns a while ago I watched an old B/W one I'd not seen before, the Gunslinger with Gregory Peck-superb film!
Larry, did you mean THE GUNFIGHTER (1950), with Karl Marlden? If that's the one you are thinking of I agree.

Yea you're right Steve, the Gunfighter. Loved it. The scene where the two guys are fighting in the dirt is so funny
Just started THE FALL by Hogan & del Toro at lunch. Picks up pretty much where the first left off, after the battle with The Master. The authors fill in any new reader on much of what has gone before. I appreciate with the writer(s) of a series take the time to do this.
I am still plugging away at The Likeness by Tana French. I feel like I have been reaidng this forever, and at over two weeks now, I practically have!
Right now I'm reading Wuthering Heights. I've been on a mission to read all of the classics that I didn't read while studying English, so this is the one I'm trekking through at the moment. I'm really liking it so far.

I love Wuthering Heights. I have taught both Wuthering Heights and Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre. I find that most of my students prefer Jane Eyre. I have to say that although I love Wuthering Heights, I much prefer Jane Eyre.

Rose wrote: "It's pretty good so far. About 100 pages in and it's really starting to roll."I read they are making a movie, although personally I think I'd prefer a tv series as there is more flexibility.
Hello there, I'm new, currently reading The King of Kahel by Tierno Monénembo for Amazon Vine and Middlesex, Jeffrey Eugenides, because so many of my friends have given it sterling reviews - have to say I'm not exactly blown away with it so far, I'm finding it rather over-written for my taste but it's early days yet.

I am reading SOLOMON'S OAK by Jo-Ann Mapson. It is good...a cozy read...life situations and a great story. Why am I reading it, because I won it on LibrayThing and also on Bookbrowse...not sure how that happened, but I can always use the second one for a gift.
I just finished...well...tried to finish GREAT HOUSE by Nicole Krauss....ok....don't throw anything at me, but I just couldn't connect with it. I know others are raving about it.
Stop by my blog for great reviews and photos of Portree, Scotland, and the Isle of Skye.

Thanks for stopping by.
I just finished the new Robin Cook book- Cure- It was reliably good and fast moving even though the characters talk as is they are auditioning for a finishing school-
I am now read Strip by Thomas Perry

Myself When Young: The Shaping of a Writer by Daphne du Maurier. This is a memoir that she fashioned from diaries she kept from 1920 thru 1932. The book is novelistic in format and reads like a dream. It's full of wit and insight, and is hugely entertaining. I'm about half way through and can not recommend it enough.
The White Company, as in Conan Doyle? Never read it myself but my brother is a Conan Doyle collector
Taking a break from the Likeness and reading a cozy mystery, Grace Under Pressure by Julie Hyzy. It's doing the job of being a faster paced, quicker read that makes me feel like I am at least making progress with something. Will go back to the Likeness when I finish this one.
I am reading 'A Walk to the West Isles' by Frank Delaney. This book follows the path of Samuel Johnson and James Boswell's tour of the Hebrides. I'm about half way through. I got it out of the library because it looking interesting (history, literature AND travel in one go). The author chose to walk a journey that Johnson made by horse and carriage, meaning his progress is slow and interspersed with sudden bus trips to make up time (I would have taken a car).
Another problem is that many of the landmarks visited by Johnson seem to have been shut when Delaney arrived. This makes for a book that feels a little short of local colour and a bit heavy on general descriptions of landscape and the relationship between Johnson and Boswell.
The author genuinely knows and understands his literature, and is a very erudite writer, but it is all a bit unloveable. I do not feel I know, understand or care for Johnson any more than I did before, and I believe that should be the point.
Larry wrote: "The White Company, as in Conan Doyle? Never read it myself but my brother is a Conan Doyle collector"Yes, that White Company. It's a bit of a plod, but I'm sticking with it. And finding it more interesting as I get into it.
