Theresa | 15499 comments PFFT. Spinner is NOT HELPING!

Will give this some thought before deciding what to do. I do have free passes to use and might just do that.

Theresa | 15499 comments OK, Spinner is off my Christmas gift list - heading South is practically useless to me from New Orleans, given my limited time to read and pile of must reads, and nearly impossible. I'm using one of my free passes to go NE - heading to Nova Scotia.

If Spinner doesn't shape up, it will be stricken from my Christmas card list too!

I hope you have a lot of other far north books, because odds are good that you’ll be there a while. And you won’t be able to blame the spinner for putting you there. I’m speaking from experience. 🥶
You could always wait a week, or go just a little north.

Oh, no!

message 564: by Theresa (new)

Theresa | 15499 comments Put me on the Wednesday July 30th list for a spin!

Fran - I noted in my review and tracking - I ended up not using a free pass, but sticking to the spinner direction given of South thanks to Sue reminding me of a cozy mystery set in the Yucatan in a series I have been reading off and on.

Now, I am expecting a helpful spin this week in exchange, one that fits one of the pile of books on the nightstand. Plus I'm have a tough work week...

Oh spinner, please please be kind.

message 565: by Ellen (new)

Ellen | 3507 comments May I have my next spin this Wednesday, please? Thanks!

message 566: by Theresa (new)

Theresa | 15499 comments Just came over to check I am on the list for tomorrow and to have a quiet chat with the Spinner. I am having a very hard week with long work days, and Spinner, I could really use a direction that works for the books piled on my nightstand - East, North East, West particularly, but Northwest would be great too. I'll restore you to the Christmas Card List too ....

message 569: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12909 comments Honestly, this time around, I don’t have a wish for the compass….. because I have so much to choose from. I guess I’m gonna say I hope it’s not east or North. Because all I ever get is east with a prickling of north. Honestly, of my 12 spins, I think eight of them have been east. One of them was north east and the other was southeast and one was Southwest. I’ve literally circled the globe twice now just by heading east. So something interesting would be of help. Currently in Cyprus, Greece. Monaco would be lovely just saying. So would New Zealand. Again, just saying. Landing in the US would be fine too. But of course, we shall see. Now that I have over 12 books for play harder, and one of them is set in China, and to Israel, so I guess if it’s east, I’ll live. But now that there’s so many books, there’s also so many places. Not to mention family drama. But today’s spin decides what I’m going to start third, I imagine somewhere around August 9 or 10th.

message 570: by Holly R W (new)

Holly R W | 3104 comments I've spent more time traveling to states in the U.S. than I imagined when we first started playing Compass. My travels have not been so far-flung. That's due to the directions I've received and the timing of my holds coming due in the public library. Right now, I'm in California, despite having read a book set in Italy at around the same time. The spinner did not give me the right direction for Italy.

I'll be interested to see the direction I'm given today.

Up until your spin and Joanne's it was heading south.

Amy wrote: "We shall see! What is south of Greece?"

Were you in Greece or Cyprus? Israel is south of Cyprus. Africa is south of both.

message 578: by NancyJ (last edited Jul 30, 2025 02:52PM) (new)

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11060 comments I’m on week four of my dance along the southern coasts of the world. Unless I’m overlooking some islands, it looks like my options west of Melbourne are South Africa or Perth Australia. Perth is probably a good place to find family drama, and I haven't been there in a long time.

Cloudstreet by Tim Winton is the book I had in mind, if I can get it.

Or maybe Rio

message 579: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12909 comments OK, Israel it is!!! I have so much for Israel. But I have one that has stripes on the cover!!!! Play harder here I come!!!

message 580: by Theresa (new)

Theresa | 15499 comments Of course it was headed south, which would have been very bad for me. Spinner fortunately switched it up. Or just wanted back on my Christmas Card list.

I don't have anything, but I do have a question. If I go to Antarctica, read & review a book set there, what happens on the next spin?

Keep your fingers crossed for something northward.

Booknblues | 12045 comments Dogs, we love them and guess what? August is National Dog Month.

You know what that means, a free ticket if you read a book with a dog in the title, on the cover, has 5 dog tags, is in the author's name or you can prove that it significantly involves a dog.

Hmm - maybe I'll read the one set in London and we can go to high tea at Brown's Hotel. Or someplace equally sublime.

message 587: by Joy D (new)

Joy D | 10068 comments BnB, I am going to use a free pass to go West instead of South. I will note this change on my tracking and reporting.

Thinking of the song, "Matchmaker" from Fiddler on the Roof.

I'll bring the book.
You find the place
To make my heart race... "

Amy | 12909 comments That was fun Holly... Can I join in on the next verse? I could also use a new direction tomorrow. I am struggling.

For Sparkle - make her a journey, For Ease, let her fly as she Please,
For Me, Well, I would be happy if family drama could land in the waters of the glorious Southeast.

Can you hear it musically?
