Upton | 916 comments @Ashley - Happy New Year!

It looks like when I added my book to January, it gave me points for the month of January and February. Could you please take a look at our spreadsheet? Fo the Narrative Nomads. Thank you!

message 53: by Geri (new)

Geri | 260 comments Ashley, for the diversity bonus and quarterly mini challenge, do we need to justify the checkmark anywhere on the spreadsheet? Or just mark it? For example, the author of one of my books fits the diversity category because he is gay. I learned that through reading the book. Not through the description. Do I need to put this information anywhere?

Thank you!

It's the honor system for the Diversity Bonus, you can add it as a note in the cell if you'd like, but unless you are unsure and want to discuss whether it is or isn't a valid bonus book, then I will take you at your word.

these are the dates the book needs to be finished. it's ok if you start it before, like if you start a book with a strong female lead on Jan 2, as long as you finished between Jan 8-14, you can count it

Are you doing it on mobile or on the computer? If on mobile, maybe you need to kind of move around and tap the area until it ticks. You could always ask a teammate to tick the box for you, if yours just wants to be stubborn.

Mobile, and iPad tried both won’t work. Tried moving around this is why I don’t like spreadsheets as it prefers computers

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 908 comments This and Solar are Spreadsheet challenges as announced with the challenge information when people sign up.

I have found when I do have to use the Google Sheets app on the phone temporarily, that to click certain things I sometimes have to zoom in on the phone screen to help select. It does click on the phone/tablet as well on Google sheets.

I do agree Goodreads in general and a lot of spreadsheet on mobile and tablets isn't nearly as suitable and easy as on a computer - I try to use the GR app on the phone (for anything!) as little as possible as it's so glitchy and limited.

You get an additional 5 points if the task is completed with a book from the monthly bonus genre. Your sheet isn't showing the bonus because it doesn't recognize your date (6.1.25) as a date.

I have changed it, and your book points are calculating correctly now (you got 18pts), but you need to add your justification.

Kat wrote: "Oh? I didn’t think I’d have to put us date ? I did add justification so don’t know why it’s not showing"

The history on the sheet doesn't show anything ever being typed in the cell for justification (G29), so just add that in before the end of the month (or have a teammate do it).

You definitely have to put in the date you finished reading the book, or it will not calculate your points.

Again, if you are having trouble with the sheet, you are more than welcome to do a completion post in your Team thread and have a teammate transfer it to the sheet for you.

Diversity only counts if it's a book by an author from an underrepresented group or a book translated from another language."

Can you clarify an underrepresented group? I am careful on marking mine such as with different racial, country, transgender, gay, etc, but some people are taking it much broader so wasn't sure, such as marking every woman writer as diversity bonus.

message 85: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 3761 comments There are more women authors than male these days, so I definitely wouldn't count that as underrespresented!

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 908 comments Sammy wrote: "There are more women authors than male these days, so I definitely wouldn't count that as underrespresented!"

Yeah, historically it was so, but now females are the majority of writers in almost all genres, so was just double checking - I don't want to lose out on points in case.

message 87: by Kat (new)

Kat (bookworm2017) | 1442 comments So based on this would males be underrepresented?

message 88: by Ashley, The Tipsy Challenger (new)

Ashley Basile (smashreads) | 5625 comments Mod
Underrepresented groups in literature typically refer to authors whose voices and experiences have been historically marginalized or underrepresented in mainstream publishing. While the definition can vary, for this challenge these groups are considered underrepresented:
1. Racial and ethnic minorities (e.g., Black, Indigenous, Asian, Latino/Hispanic authors)
2. LGBTQIA+ authors
3. Authors with disabilities
4. Authors from religious minorities
5. Authors from developing countries or non-Western cultures

Trisha | 798 comments I'm looking for an exception the this rule:

"4. Reviews and Summaries
5 points for each book review or summary submitted
Reviews must be at least 200 words to qualify"

I love writing reviews but I'm struggling to write a 200 word review on a 1 star review.

I don't think it's fair to the author or myself to write 200 words bashing the book. It's pretty easy to say I don't like it, why it didn't work for me. I even did a buddy read and detailed all the things I didn't like about it.

I just find it . . .I don't know, distasteful to really bash an author and their book in a review and go on and on about it.

Review in question: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

My whole team read the book and it was one that had a really difficult requirement (new year's resolutions - don't have many left on my TBR!), otherwise I'd switch it out.

If I can't have the exception, does it mean I can still use the book, I just lose the 5 bonus points for the review?

Trisha, your review (as posted) is perfectly acceptable for the bonus points. Yes, I realize it's only 100 words, but if you hated it and don't want to bash an author, I think that's fine. In this instance there is no need to be long winded. You can claim the bonus.
