Kari | 791 commentsHi Ashley,
For the task: 'Read a book about someone starting at a new school', can it be a teacher starting a job in a new school?
I don't see a thread for Q&A, should we ask our questions here or in our own thread? Thanks!
Answer:
I will accept your variation, as the "new" part applies and it's a school

Ashley,
For the task: Read a book set on New Year's Day. This is a pretty specific day. Can the book just be centered around that day? Like a person was born on the day and the whole book is centered around the bad luck of her birthday? However, the book spans more than that day.

Seconding this question and also adding to it a bit.... I have a book set around New Year's Eve, then I'm assuming the next day will happen in the book since it's a mystery. The whole "start" is a New year's eve party

I am curious about this too - looking at Rules of Civility which has a NYE start, then more.
Answer:
It definitely doesn't have to be set ONLY on that day. New Year's Day just needs to be included... maybe they attend a party, etc. All the above examples would count.

Would you accept Contemporary for Contemporary Fiction? Or if it says Contemporary Romance, etc, would that count? I have several saying contemporary but not all say contemporary fiction, but as long as it's a fiction book...?
Answer:
As long as Contemporary is part of the genre and a MAIN PAGE one, I'll accept it!

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 319 commentsAnd not to bombard with questions ,which I've been doing, but could we count it as Diversity if the novel setting is a country other than our own?
Answer:
Diversity only counts if it's a book by an author from an underrepresented group or a book translated from another language.

Refer to the Standard Challenge Requirements for re-reads:
❀ Re-reads are accepted if it has been six months since you have read the book

Geri wrote: "For page points, which edition do you want us to post in the spreadsheet?"
Always use the edition that you read.
Audiobooks are accepted using the default Goodreads edition page number unless it is a large print edition. In this case, use the next version in the list.
If there is no print book, you may use the book if your page count is 100pgs+ when using the following formula to figure page count:
minutes x 150 = words
words ÷ 250 = pages
(example: 4hr 15m = 255 minutes x 150 = 38,250 words ÷ 250 = 153pgs)

Yes, non fiction characters are fine, just make sure they are a substantial part of the narrative, not a random person that's mentioned.

On the 1st, but for subsequent months, they just need to be started on or after Jan 1st, not necessarily the month you're in

(I probably would have to take a vow of silence to read the whole thing, but it’s worth a try)

Will & Patrick Wake Up Married: Eps 1-3
Can we count that as 1 book, or would it be 3?
Sorry, new to the group and don't know if there is a standard rule for this.
"Underrepresented groups refer to communities or individuals who have limited representation and voice in society, education, politics, and decision-making bodies.
Underrepresentation often stems from historical discrimination or marginalization due to factors such as race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, disability status, language proficiency and religion."
"It can also refer to underrepresentation in media, such as when groups are underrepresented as protagonist in television shows and movies compared to the dominant group in society."
The page I found this helpful information on has a list of examples of different types of underrepresented groups, with explanations for each. I'll be using it as a reference for any diversity-related tasks. It helped me think beyond what I would normally consider diverse.

For the buddy reads bonus, is it strictly "formal buddy reads" or can we have threads created if a couple of us want to buddy read a book just for our team? (And I suppose any other teams who might want to join those buddy read discussions!)
Hey everyone! Work has been WILD with Christmas, so I'm sorry I haven't answered questions yet! I'm going to sit down tomorrow and answer everything!

No, for this challenge, a Buddy Read is a Buddy Read. You can start your own (it just needs to be within the official BR thread and a mod needs to start the thread for you.

Teresa answered this nicely!

For the Team Reading Bonus, everyone on the team must read the same book.

It will be something else (I'm going to try to get that posted today while I catch up).

The Bonus Genre is listed on your spreadsheet. I will also add it to everyone's threads when I post the quarterly bonus information. January's bonus genre is MPG Contemporary Fiction

For the 'Books Set in Different Countries' quarterlies task, does that mean any book set in a country not your own, or that you can only count any country once (including/excluding your own)?
Or even some convoluted "No books set in english-speaking countries, but no limits on how many times you use Korea" that my brain would totally try to make a thing 😂

The keyword is "different", so (and yes, now I see I should have been more specific here) what I meant was read books set in different countries than you live in and they can't repeat. So if you live in Scotland, you can read a book set in any other country, but not 3 books set in Korea - well you can, you can just only get a bonus for 1.

My brain always tries to make tasks as difficult as possible for me. But as I'm trying to simplify my life this coming year, that isn't working so well for me 😆

Good luck! I've never been successful with simplifying... I think I just need to accept it at this point... 😆

Thank you so much!
Strong female leads in books are characters who possess agency, complexity, and the ability to drive the narrative, regardless of their specific personality traits or roles within the story.

Kat, I haven't read any of these books, so I wouldn't know. It's up to you to decide if you consider any of the characters a strong female lead, and then make your argument/justification.

• Week 2 (February 12-18): Books About Friendship 🤝
Celebrate the bonds that matter! Choose books that explore the beauty and complexity of friendship, from childhood pals to lifelong companions.
Would a best friends to lovers story work for this or would it need to remain a friendship only to count?
I would consider that a romance, so let's stick to friendship. it's ok if there is romance in the book, but not the main focus, that should be friendship.
Pretty much! Book discussion can go in Buddy Reads! Obviously you can chat about things in your group thread, organize book team Reads, etc

Kat, I looked over your books to see if I could glean anything and what I found is that Jane is Trying has been reviewed as having a strong female lead.
The others possibly as well, but Jane in particular stood out to me. The rest of the books sound like some would fit the friendship quarterly, as well.
