Would multiple generations of a family be 2 or does it need to be more?

Do they need to be a traditional family (related by blood) for the family bond task, or can it be a found family?

Since "multiple generations" typically include grandparents, parents, children, and sometimes great-grandchildren, 2 is acceptable if you're referring to say Grandparents and their kids.

For example, a family gathering with individuals from ages 5 to 85 would represent multiple generations.

message 106: by Trisha (new)

Trisha | 798 comments Hello! checking to see if these books would work for a February task:

Task: Read a book about love between humans and animals.

Book possibilities:
A Sweet Sting of Salt by Rose Sutherland - synopsis says it's a "selkie wife" re-telling. If there is, in fact, a Selkie in the story that the MC loves, would this work?

or

Horse by Geraldine Brooks - about a racing horse. one storyline is about the one who raised from a foal into a racer

Just wanted to check! Thanks!

Would it count for the mini?

Iliana (icorrea23) | 27 comments Hey Ashley,
Can a book qualify for love across cultures if it is a book about a human and a hellhound. Im thinking of this book, On A Rift's Edge.

Iliana, let's not cross species for that task, cultures only. However, you could certainly use it next month for love between humans and animals, if indeed there is love ....

The book only has to be started after the beginning of the challenge.

If you started a book on Jan 8 and didn't finish until Mar 5, you would use the book in March.

🌟 March Book Quest: Secrets and Lies! 🌟

Welcome to March, adventurers! This month, we’re diving into the shadowy world of Secrets and Lies—where mysteries unravel, truths are hidden, and nothing is as it seems. Get ready for twists, turns, and thrilling revelations as we explore the darker side of storytelling.

📅 Monthly Theme: Secrets and Lies
This month, challenge yourself with books that keep you guessing. Here are your reading tasks:

📖 Read a book that involves a significant secret that changes the course of the story.
📖 Read a book with an unreliable narrator.
📖 Read a book where a character has a hidden identity.
📖 Read a book featuring government conspiracy.
📖 Read a book about keeping family secrets.
📖 Read a book where lies lead to major consequences.
📖 Read a book with plot twists and surprises.
📖 Read a book about uncovering historical secrets.
📖 Read a book featuring espionage or spies.
📖 Read a book where social media secrets are exposed.

🎯 Bonus Genre: Mystery/Thriller
To earn extra points, choose books from the bonus genre of Mystery/Thriller!

🌍 Themed Reading Week: Books Set in Different Countries
From March 19-25, embark on a literary journey around the world! Read books set in diverse locations to immerse yourself in different cultures and perspectives.

📌 How It Works:
> Read books that fit the Books Set in Different Countries theme.
> Earn 15 points for each book read during the themed week.

Important Announcement for Teams
As I was updating spreadsheets, I noticed a few teams have members who haven’t read anything this month. I’m happy to help find replacement players for missing members, but I can’t keep track of everyone on my own. If your team is missing a member and you’ve tried to contact them without success, please let me know ASAP so I can find you a replacement.

For teams that have a period of time where a replacement can’t be found, I’m allowing MOD books to keep the team afloat. This ensures your team stays active and competitive while we work on filling the gap.

Happy reading, adventurers! Let’s uncover the mysteries and lies hidden within the pages of our books this March. 📖✨

Jessica S | 619 comments Hi Ashley! For Week 3 bonus, you said 'Each book should represent a unique country'. Can we still use books where characters are travelling through multiple countries, none of them being our own?

message 143: by Ashley, The Tipsy Challenger (new)

Ashley Basile (smashreads) | 5625 comments Mod
Yes, that's fine, but you'll need to choose 1 country per book

Skye Blue ☆*~゚ლ(´ڡ`ლ)~*☆ (surendraskye) | 370 comments Just double checking.
It's okay if a significant amount of time is spent in a country, without it being over 50% of the book?

I have a couple that a big chunk of the book is set in a different country....but I haven't checked to see if it's more than 50%. I don't want to spoil the story while scanning to see the %.
btw, none of the book is set in my country.

I'm not going to put a number on the amount of time spent in a country. I would ask that you use your judgment. Obviously, the characters "flying over" or "passing through" a country, isn't really enough, but if they spend any amount of plot time there, you can use it.

message 147: by Shandrea (new)

Shandrea Freeman | 83 comments What is an 'unreliable narrator"?

message 148: by Ashley, The Tipsy Challenger (new)

Ashley Basile (smashreads) | 5625 comments Mod
An unreliable narrator is a storytelling device in which the narrator's credibility is compromised, either intentionally or unintentionally. This type of narrator may provide misleading, biased, or false information, leading readers or viewers to question the accuracy of the story being told. The unreliability can stem from various factors, such as:

☆ Personal Bias: The narrator may have a skewed perspective due to their beliefs, emotions, or experiences.
☆ Mental Instability: The narrator might be suffering from a psychological condition, such as delusions or memory loss, which distorts their perception of reality.
☆ Lack of Knowledge: The narrator may be ignorant or misinformed about certain events or details.
☆ Deception: The narrator could intentionally lie or withhold information to manipulate the audience or other characters.
☆ Immaturity or Naivety: A young or inexperienced narrator might misinterpret events due to their limited understanding of the world.

Here is a Goodreads list to get you started on ideas: Books with Unreliable Narrators
