One example I can think of: in the grandmother's generation. One of the women is ostracized from her family due to an incident that she had not control over. She then has to choose to accept a role that I think everyone would agree is uncomfortable (not trying to spoil anything or say anything triggering) in order to ensure that she and her daughter can survive.

It's been a long time since I read the book but I believe all the older generation survived bad situations in China. I guess its a matter of interpretation of the word "survival"
