The Fools in Town Are on Our Side

Kelsey is bubbly when they move into their new (to them) house, but Lauren is freaking out about being watched from The Other Side of the Road. I enjoyed thriller writer Andrea Bartz's suspenseful story and the ending I didn't expect.

About to finish Inspector Imanishi Investigates by Seichō Matsumoto. Oh my, do the bodies ever pile up in this one!
It's a reread, but it's been so long the story is completely new to me.
Not quite sure what I'll be reading next.

Just finished reading this book by J. Anthony Sisto and it had me guessing on who the bad guy really was. Suspenseful and well developed characters throughout the book. There is a very eye opening element to trafficking and although it is fiction, we know there are evil people like this out in our world. Enjoyable read!
Now starting GANGLAND by Chuck Hogan, a stand alone crime novel that earned a 2023 Edgar Award nomination as Best Mystery Novel of the Year.
Georgia wrote: "The Black Ice by Michael Connelly📕🥸"I'm enjoying his books now, too. I liked The Black Ice very much, Georgia.
Michael Connelly's a favourite.
My review of The Black Ice
Ah - a couple of goodies from the #NeverTell short story collection. Both are about women in the desert in very different, life-threatening circumstances. Deserts lend themselves to mystery, I think. One woman is a crook, while one is a tattooist.
This one is the crook:
Scorpions by Rachel Howzell HallMy review of Scorpions

A Calamity of Souls

I've finished reading Inspector Imanishi Investigates and then sat down to watch the film based on the novel called The Castle of Sand (1974, directed by Yoshitaro Nomura). The book, which focuses on a string of deaths and the subsequent investigation, begins in the present and goes back into the past as the titular Inspector searches for the who and the why. The film streamlines the plot somewhat (although the movie itself is like 2 and a half hours long) but I have to say that I sat and cried throughout the last 45 minutes because it was absolutely heartbreaking. The way the director structured the film during that particular segment of time was pretty much genius. Both book and novel are pretty unconventional, taking a slow-burn approach to focus on finding the truth as the detective encounters a serious number of dead ends.
I read Bloodlands: Europe Between Hitler and Stalin by Timothy Snyder It is not a mystery but a history of the mass killings under Hitler and Stalin from 1932-19454. My 5 star review https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...I strongly recommend this book. The author speaks and reads 6 languages, and has consulted sources overlooked by most historians of this period.
I finished this novel about crack dealers in New Jersey housing projects
