UNO RULES AND IMPORTANT INFO
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Books must be more than 100 pages in length and Children's books, Graphic Novels, Manga, Cook Books, Plays and Poetry books can not be used unless by word count they can be verified as more than 25,000 words using arbookfind.com or more than 3 hours of audio using a reputable website (e.g. audible, overdrive)

For book titles starting with an article (A/An/The), the article can be ignored or used. So The Hiding Place, for example, could be used as title starting with T or H

Re-reads are ok provided it has been more than 6 months since last read

**Important note**
Some books on the color cover list may not seem like the color cover. This is because GR will show the default version. There may be a specific version that has been shelved that is the actual color. The version you read is what you should shelve, and is what counts, for UNO.

COUNTDOWN
Only books started after the challenge starts can count for this challenge.

Michelle (govmarley) | 584 comments Completion Post Format
If you are not able to use the spreadsheet, we will need to following information posted in our thread to be moved into the planning spreadsheet. You do not need to post a completion post in this thread if you are able to add to the spreadsheet on your own - this is only if you are not able to use the spreadsheet.
Our team sheet is located here:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...
Captains will be moving books around to fill holes, so please list all cards your book could work for.
Color cards should take priority. If you claim a color card, please try to finish that book quickly so we aren't left scrambling at the end of the month!

Michelle (govmarley) | 584 comments Books must be marked as "read" in Goodreads with the date AND shelved to your UNO shelf for the captain team to accurately track.
We will need to verify this to move it to the official sheet.

Also, please be sure you are posting in our team thread at least once a week, even if you haven't finished any books. We need to know you are still playing so we aren't scrambling at the end of the month.

Kadi P (kadi_p) | 655 comments Hi guys! I’m Kadi, I’m your co-captain and I’m super excited to get started!

I’ve taken part in the challenge twice before, I was a co-captain in 2017 and captain in 2018.

I’m not really competitive, I’m more excited to push myself to read more books as I didn’t read much last year and maybe broaden my reading horizon by seeing what cool books you all read!

I read predominantly middle grade and YA books. I host my own MG book group on goodreads if anyone is interested in MG books as well: https://www.goodreads.com/group/show/...

My fave genres are mystery and time travel. I also love genres like spy thrillers and royalty. I also like comics and manga although I’ll probably find it difficult to make any of them count for this challenge sadly.

Michelle (govmarley) | 584 comments We are so excited to play another round of Uno! While we wait for the fun to begin, let's get to know each other. Share as much about yourself as you'd like.
Name
Location
Favorite Genres/Authors/Series
Least Favorite Genres
Interesting hobbies/facts/whatever you want

I'm Michelle - this is one of my favorite annual challenges. I live outside of Crater Lake, Oregon, USA, and I'm the Executive Director for a young adult mental health residential program. I'm on the road a lot for work, and travel for pleasure when I can squeeze it in. I'm married and I have two grown kids, and we are all big readers.
Everyone always has a book going!

I will read absolutely anything for a challenge, but my favorite genres are mysteries, historicals of all kinds (mystery, romance, family drama), non-fiction, westerns, and fantasy. I don't read a ton of sci fi, horror, or contemporary romance but will read them sometimes, just not my go-to.

Favorite series - I love detectives and cops. Inspector Gamache, Harry Bosch, Leaphorn & Chee, Joe Pickett, Walt Longmire, Will Trent. Always looking for new favorite lawmen and crime fighters to add to my list, so send those recs my way! I also discovered Mercy Thompson last year and absolutely loving it.

When I'm not reading, I love to play outside. Hiking, riding my horse, snowshoeing, camping, running, exploring. Oftentimes I have an audiobook going when I'm doing these things. I love audio books.

Lots of familiar faces, and some new ones as well. Can't wait to find out all about this great new team and do some reading together.

Kadi P (kadi_p) | 655 comments I think I ticked most of the boxes for my into there except location! I’m currently in the UK (England specifically) and I also live in Dubai (UAE) which is why my profile location is set as UAE and I will be going back in April. I’m always between the two when work permits.

Speaking of work, I work in a law firm as a property paralegal.

And speaking of crime fighters, it’s awesome to see you like them too, Michelle! I recommend the Eddie Flynn series by Steve Cavanagh. He’s a fantastic character and the books are so great. And you can read them out of order. I read the first one years ago and the 4th one this time last year (time flies!) and it was amazing. Great plot, very thrilling and a fun court room drama type mystery. Highly recommend!

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) Hello, all! Nice to see some recognized faces but most of you are newer to me. I am a big challenge player for years, especially competitive team challenges, but surprisingly I have only played Uno once, I believe, and that was years ago. I will be a little awkward getting used to what is needed at first, but I especially enjoy team based and spreadsheet challenges, so should be fine

I have a grown son, and three furball cats who I spoil. I live in Central Florida and work as the intake coordinator for our clinical counseling program with a social services and child welfare agency. I read as my main hobby, but otherwise spend time with friends and family, walk, music, TV, bake randomly.

I love almost all genres but my favorites are Urban Fantasy, Paranormal anything, Mysteries - whether cozy, hardboiled, noir, psychological, Horror Books of all kinds, and Romance of most types.

I look forward to playing with you all.

And thanks, Michelle, for posting the recipe - I was wondering on it. Looks a little strong and overpowering to me

message 14: by Namita (last edited Jan 14, 2024 08:34PM) (new)

Namita (-namita) | 110 comments Hi everyone!! Checking in. I’m Namita from Vancouver, Canada. I’m a mom to a teenager and my fur baby. Niko, the Golden Doodle.

My fave genres are Steampunk, PNR, Thrillers and Urban Fantasy.

I enjoy watching Asian TV; ie; Chinese and Korean.

Looking forward to playing.

Jennifer Osting | 87 comments Hello! I’m Jennifer. This is my first book challenge on goodreads so I am still trying to review everything. Im super excited though.
I live in Colorado, USA. We are currently having some pretty low temperatures so I had a very relaxing weekend shut in. 🥰 I am married and have three boys and two dogs. Im homeschooling my youngest currently so I am hoping that I can count some of the books I read with him too. Im currently kicking myself because we just started Island of the Blue Dolphins. 😩
I have always loved most genres but have fallen in love with fantasy this last year. I tend to go through periods of genres. I love historical fiction, suspense, magical realism, thriller, chick lit… I love a great story but usually pass over the spicy bits.
I love audio books and that has increased my ability to read more which is a huge win. I also enjoy some gaming, currently playing beat saber on my sons VR. It’s a lot of fun. I can be crafty at times as well. I love hiking and getting out to enjoy nature as well.
I’m looking forward to meeting everyone!

nadine | 40 comments hi everyone! so excited to finally meet my team and jump into my second year of UNO! 😊 my name is Nadine and i live in London, UK. i read mostly YA fiction, especially fantasy/sci-fi/mystery but i will try reading a bit of anything. even when i say i don't like to read certain genres as much, such as romance or literary fiction, i'll still pick up those books and add them to my reading list from time to time (the last two books i read were both romance novels)!

outside of reading my big hobby is crocheting which i picked up early last year after discovering it through tiktok! at the minute i'm crocheting a sweater, a throw/blanket, and a storage basket for my mother 😊

message 17: by Kadi (new)

Kadi P (kadi_p) | 655 comments Hello Jennifer, Namita, Erin and Nadine! It’s so lovely to meet you all! It’s cool to see we cover a wide variety of genres between us all.

Has anyone got any books they’ve been dying to read and are waiting for the challenge to read them? I’ve been scouring my shelves for short reads in preparation!

message 18: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Osting | 87 comments Nadine, I do a bit of knitting sometimes. I have been thinking of picking it back up. How do you work on multiple projects? I feel like I would confuse the patterns.

message 19: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Osting | 87 comments Kadi-I haven’t really figured out strategy for this game quite yet. When considering joining I was wondering how the game would impact my reading. I usually only read what I can get at the library. I have books on hold, for sometimes a long time, and if they are available I will need to read them but worry that they won’t be the “right” book for the game. How do you deal with this?

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) Kadi wrote: "Has anyone got any books they’ve been dying to read and are waiting for the challenge to read them? I’ve been scouring my shelves for short reads in preparation!
"

I have a lot pre-planned for this year so not sure what I will be getting to in February because, while I'm great at making reading plans in general, I get distracted from them into other books randomly :)

message 21: by Grace (new)

Grace | 9 comments Hello everyone! I'm Grace. This is my first challenge on goodreads, so I'm still getting the hang of things, and I might also be a bit awkward at first, but I'm super excited to play with you guys!
I like all genres, though last year, I mostly only read romance and fantasy. I'm planning to read more mysteries/thrillers this year so I would love some recs!
Aside from reading, I love going on walks and knitting. I also like to bake occasionally.
Also, thanks for the recipe Michelle!😊

message 23: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (govmarley) | 584 comments I'm excited to have a more international team this year - makes it fun to pop on at any hour and see what you are all up to. We are still waiting on Samantha and Mimi to pop in and we will all be ready to go.

A few housekeeping items since we have a few of you who are new to Uno and GR challenges. Can you all access the spreadsheet?
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...
You can claim tasks so we know what is being planned and what needs to be completed. Please remember we can't start our books until the challenge kicks off on Feb 1. The countdown is here:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...

Let's talk strategy! The first books we will need to claim are the colored cards since they take some coordination - they must match color cover and the letter or number. We also need to start claiming Reverses (book previously read by a teammate), Draw 2s (these need to match 2 cards in the same hand covered by one book), and don't forget those Wild Draw 4s (duplicating a color card).
And if you have other things you must read for other challenges, let's get those claimed as well.

The key is to list everything it will also fit in the "other possible cards" column. I have listed one book to get us started on the "Skip Blue" card in hand 3 to show an example. Kadi and I will be moving books around to finish up hands, so don't stress if your book is moved from your original spot! We will find a place for it. The categories listed above should be our first priority, but also list where else it can work.

And don't forget that mid month we will have a mini challenge thrown our way, so some books could move from the main to the mini, opening up spots we hadn't completed.

It all seems complicated, but once we get rolling it all makes sense. Just ask any questions here and we will figure it out together. The color covers should be over 50%, so when in doubt, post it here and we will confer as a team.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) Some of it makes sense to me and some is confusing so far. I will look for some colored books I plan to read for some of the tasks adn reserve one when I get a chance. I just tested and it seems the spreadsheet works for me fine, so I do have access.

I am still figuring it out a bit for strategy but will see what everyone says/thinks.

Will also see if I am planning to read anything soon that one of you has read for the "read by other teammate" task

We do have to complete one hand before we can move on to the other, correct?

message 25: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (govmarley) | 584 comments Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* wrote: "We do have to complete one hand before we can move on to the other, correct?"

We only get points for the completed hands starting with hand one. If it looks like we won't finish at the end of the month (this has never happened in four years for me), we would move everything up to get as many points as possible, but I've never seen a month where the team can't finish by the deadline.

We can, and should, read in any order as our books fit, so the colored cards take top priority for us!

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) Okay, that does make it easier then.

message 27: by nadine (new)

nadine | 40 comments Jennifer wrote: "Nadine, I do a bit of knitting sometimes. I have been thinking of picking it back up. How do you work on multiple projects? I feel like I would confuse the patterns."

i have so many different projects that i want to try that i can't stop myself from starting a new thing before i'm done with another lol! i try and cap it off at 3 projects simultaneously to reduce the likelihood that i abandon a project. keeping a simple table of all my project helps me keep track of what i've done and what i'm doing. little things like using stitch markers that match the colour of my hooks to remind me which one i was using on a project also help!

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) I claimed a blue card of a book I was wanting to read soon, hope this helps.

message 29: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (govmarley) | 584 comments Perfect, Erin!

If anyone has problems with the spreadsheet, just post and let us know. It's sometimes tricky on mobile, so if you can't get a book logged, we can take care of it if you post the details here.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) I added a planned Reverse and Yellow Skip. I didn't want to hog more and will give some more a chance but all of those seemed to need planning, and the yellow skip I need to read for a yearly challenge anyway (not something I'd usually pick up, so hopefully I like it), and the Yellow Skip combination actually worked for that one pretty easily without extensive searching for that particular combo, thankfully! <3

message 31: by nadine (new)

nadine | 40 comments i've also popped in a book for 1 green, will be glad to get this read as it's been sat on my bookshelf for years 🫣

message 32: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (govmarley) | 584 comments Love it! There will be plenty of spaces for everyone to claim, so don't feel bad if you have a book that fits on your TBR. We will find some of the open spots to get more challenging once the mini challenge posts mid-month.

message 33: by MiMi (new)

MiMi | 67 comments Hi everyone,
I‘m Mimi and this is my third year playing uno. I‘m excited to choose my books for the challenge soon.
I live in Germany and like most genres, my fav would be fantasy and historical fiction. I read a fun middle grade as well. Least fav is non fiction and horror for me.
In my free time I also pick up a crochet hook sometimes. I’m a total beginner though.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) Michelle wrote: "Love it! There will be plenty of spaces for everyone to claim, so don't feel bad if you have a book that fits on your TBR. We will find some of the open spots to get more challenging once the mini ..."

Okay great, reserved two more colored cards that I wanted to read soon for other goals then, a Blue and a Red. Thanks!!

message 35: by Samantha (new)

Samantha | 30 comments Hi friends! Sorry I'm late to the party :)

I'm Sam, and this is my first time playing Uno! I've popped around GR reading challenge groups in the past but have taken a long hiatus away from them until now.

I live in Seattle, WA and work in corporate strategy at Starbucks (hi fellow PNW'er, Michelle!). I am a new parent (the little one is turning 1 at the end of this month). My favorite genres are fantasy/sci-fi, thriller, and general contemporary fiction (in that order).

Looking forward to reading with you all :) I won't reserve any spots as my reading is highly dependent upon my library holds so I won't know until I know!

I can see the spreadsheet and do read the messages but cannot reply until I can get to my desktop. The app seems much harder to navigate for these things. I like it better though for looking up books, which I guess is its original purpose. haha

I am slowly figuring out all the shorthand on the spreadsheet. :) For some reason I thought I would be assigned a card, so now I am looking through my books to see what I have that might work. My holds list is unpredictable but I will figure it out. Ill try to get some entered tonight.

You're amazing. I think I might pick that back up later this spring. I am a very slow knitter, and I am usually unhappy with my work if its not perfect so I pull them apart a lot. I probably need more consistency.

message 40: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (govmarley) | 584 comments Welcome, everyone! The whole team is checked in now. Let's start planning those first books so we are ready to start reading at the deadline.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) Today was tiring, so clocked out now and about to read some. I will know sooner what I will read as well besides all the planned I have slapped up on the spreadsheet. I'm sure February 1st will be here sooner than we all think!

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) And Michelle, I must say I am so happy you are letting us be part of the fun part of the planning and brainstorming before the challenge starts and gave us a spreadsheet and the hands to do so. That makes these kind of challenges much more interactive and exciting for me. Already I'm appreciating you as a captain and we haven't even started yet! :)

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) @Grace,

Will this be for your first read of your planned, One of Us Is Lying I absolutely loved this book. Not so much the sequel but I 5 starred the first.

Thanks, Erin! It is more fun when everyone jumps in and shares what books they are planning (and it always adds more to my TBR, too!).

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...

message 47: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (govmarley) | 584 comments Unfortunately that would be an M surname according to how Goodreads alphabetizes it. But yes to green! Hopefully a character or location will work for one of those green cards.

message 48: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Osting | 87 comments Thanks! I wasn’t sure how that would be classified as it seems like the last name would be hyphenated but I’ll keep looking!

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) Michelle wrote: "Thanks, Erin! It is more fun when everyone jumps in and shares what books they are planning (and it always adds more to my TBR, too!).

I agree completely. I get bored just logging books read in a post without any input as it kind of feels like jounaling or a general challenge instead of these massive competitive team challenges :)

And yes my TBR is constantly growing
