I agree, I would have thought the same, so I shelved it to be certain. Silly missing hypen screws everything up!

i'm very much a perfectionist and honestly picking up crochet i've had to force myself to be comfortable with making mistakes. accidentally increased one row on the throw i'm working on and had to tell myself "it'll all work out in the end" instead of going back and frogging lol! i hope you get back into your knitting!

In past uno challenges I didn’t really have a strategy at the start because there are enough cards in the hands for everyone to read whatever book they like and their book will definitely fit somewhere. Once you’ve finished about half of the hands then you have to switch it up and read books specifically to fit cards.

Michelle has highlighted the cards that we should focus on completing because they are harder to fit books to in her comment above and that’s super helpful! And as you read you’ll find that a book you thought would only count towards one card can actually count in lots of ways. So when you fill in the spreadsheet or send a completion post for me and Michelle, giving us all the details of all the possible cards the book can fit is crucial and that way if we have to move books around it makes it easier.

So have fun with it! Read a mix of what you want to read in general in a book to specifically fit a card.
This also depends on how much you plan on reading, it works well if you’re going to read at least 5+ books per month. I tend to read between 7 and 10 depending on page length which is why I’m looking for shorter books so I can read more!

Kadi P (kadi_p) | 655 comments I am currently in the process of rabidly reading half finished books that have been on my currently reading shelf for months because I don’t like to DNF books if I can really help it. DNFing is a slippery slope for me that leads to reading slumps so I’m trying to avoid that.

And I’ve picked a couple of books out of my TBR!
Cinder
Skeleton Key
Heart Break Girl
The Rise of Renegade X

I’m not going to add them to the spreadsheet yet though because sometimes I get too hyped up and have high expectations for myself which also leads to a reading slump😃 I can’t wait to read them though

message 55: by Samantha (new)

Samantha | 30 comments That's so interesting Kadi! I'm actually trying to embrace the DNF more this year. I felt like previously I would force myself through a book and it would put me in a reading slump because I would want to do anything else but read that book.

Do partial books (started in jan, but will finish in feb) could towards any of our uno books? Is there any criteria (i.e. 50% read in Feb)?

Sadly they don’t, in answer to your question, it has to be started in or after February. That’s also why I’m trying to finish all my half read books this month because any book read during Feb that doesn’t count for the uno challenge feels like a waste!

And I totally get you on how forcing yourself to read is off putting. That’s actually caused a reading slump for me in the past as well so I started DNFing when I wasn’t feeling it. The problem with that is that if a book doesn’t immediately hook me like within the first few chapters I would DNF it and it created a spiral of me being unable to get past the first quarter of a book! From the outside I sound so crazy😂
Reading has become a very delicate balance for me but I’ve always been a mood reader

Thank you for the advice. I keep looking at my TBR list and I will find a book that fits and then i look at the word count and realize that is 450+ pages and that will not work at all :) I have several book on hold also that I am waiting on and I am like 80/172 and who knows when they will come through... or even if they will have anything that counts. I am sure im not the only person with this challenge. I generally read 5-6 books a month but some of those are for school with my son so they may not fit any category either but I will love that we have some flexibility. What can we expect with the mini challenges?

message 59: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (govmarley) | 584 comments I get to be a moody reader, too. Trying to wrap up my January books so I can hit the ground running on Feb 1!

I agree, I have been attempting to do the same. I feel like there are millions of books out there and I will never get through them all, so if I am not enjoying it I just want to move on. I definitely used to slog through everything. I still rarely quit a book but sometimes it just feels like relief. I think I only have like 10 on my DNF list so that's not too bad.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) Same here. I have so many random books going I would like to finish before February.

message 62: by Kadi (new)

Kadi P (kadi_p) | 655 comments I’ve got a potential green card read called Boy X. I can see all the green cards are taken except 7 Green so I’m hoping it can’t count towards that but from the synopsis I can’t see anything that fits the 7 criteria.

So I won’t add it to the spreadsheet yet, I’m just tentatively mentioning it in case someone else has something in mind for that card. But I think it’ll be my first read for the challenge

If you find it works for anything I reserved and want to read it next month, let me know and I can hold on one of my books for the next round.

message 64: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (govmarley) | 584 comments Same with me! I am a moody reader so happy to hold off on a colored cover until the next round. If you can fit it in Green 4, I will wait on mine. Just let us know where it could fit.

Don't forget, we also need to fill those Wild Draw 4 cards, so that can duplicate one of our colored cards. You can fill that in, too.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) I admit still trying to wrap my head a bit around the wild cards, I need to look at the rules again on those.

message 66: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (govmarley) | 584 comments Here's a quick recap of the Wilds!

Wild card means we can duplicate any card in that hand, so in our hand 4, we can duplicate 2, 7, 8, Reverse, 1 or 8 Blue. It has to be a card within that hand we are duplicating.

Wild Draw 4 is a bit more challenging because it needs to match one of our colored cards. We have 4 that we drew for this month, so we can duplicate any 4 of our colored cards on the sheet.

Hope that helps as we are planning our reading for the month.

message 67: by Kadi (new)

Kadi P (kadi_p) | 655 comments I completely forgot about our WD4 cards Michelle!

Tbh I feel like my book is not going to count for any of our green cards. I haven’t read it before so I can’t be sure but from the synopsis I can only make out it fitting cards 0, 5, 6 and 9 and our green cards are 1, 4 and 7.
I’ll just have to wait till I read it and you guys stick with your planned colour reads. Worst comes to worst I’ll put it down for a regular number card.
Thanks anyway guys😊

That makes a lot more sense, thank you for the explanation.

Jennifer Osting | 87 comments Also did anyone take a look at the list of colored books at the beginning in the all about uno chat? I have attempted to check those when looking for books, but I tend to get distracted. I thought I would let everyone know though in case you weren't aware.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) I noticed but did not look too deeply, I need to!

message 74: by Grace (new)

Grace | 9 comments If we're looking for 4 green, I'm planning to read Jade City by Fonda Lee
I couldn't find anything for 7 green and 9 yellow

message 75: by Kadi (new)

Kadi P (kadi_p) | 655 comments @Grace I think 7 Green is the one we have the opening for but you can use that one for one of our Wild Draw 4s so river way it fits in.

I’ve never read that book but it has such a pretty cover!

message 76: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (govmarley) | 584 comments Grace, let’s pencil that in for Green and I’ll shift mine to a draw 4 spot.

message 77: by Jennifer (last edited Jan 21, 2024 05:26PM) (new)

Jennifer Osting | 87 comments If anyone wants a book for 7 green, I highly recommend Weyward by Emilia Hart. There is V character (Violet). It was one of my favorite books last year. Historical fiction/fantasy/magic. I'm still looking for one for myself but I thought I would throw it out there.

I listened to it on audio and it was very good.

Kadi P (kadi_p) | 655 comments So one of my planned reads Skeleton Key fits 3 Blue because it is the 3rd book in the Alex River series and the cover of my edition is blue.

Our 3 Blue card is taken so I’m putting this down for one of our Wild Draw 4s, hope that’s ok guys! I’ve added it to the spreadsheet.

Jennifer Osting | 87 comments I am listening to an audio book that is sooo long. I had no idea when I started and Im really feeling behind on my January reads now. Hopefully I will get everything finished up for Feb.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) I had an audiobook that was long and boring for awhile but it's finally gotten interesting, trying to finish up both my audios before February starts

I just looked and its 576 pages. :) Which is totally fine but I don't want it to be the only think i read in the next 8 days.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) Only 7 days and 15 hours to go - woohoo! 🚩

I have 4-5 books planning to read before Uno starts for other challenges, the rest I have pre-planned I am saving until after February starts. Excited on some of the books - a few, not so much, but I picked some color books that work with Uno based on some books I need to read for other yearly challenges 🤷

Namita (-namita) | 110 comments I'm arranging my books for Feb, I will be adding them to the Spreadsheet as I go.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) Man, I really intended to go get new tires this week and oil changed, but work has been stressful and not sure if I'll be able to make myself do it this week, despite having to drive Saturday and Monday. Ah well, my anxiety knows no bounds.

Just clocked out after a long day --- since son has ended his vacation and back to work, I have the house to myself, so I'm going to take a nice long bath, open a new bottle of wine, and read some of these books I want to get to this week :)

This is my first challenge so I am excited to see how it goes. When I hear about everyone doing other challenges I wonder how ya'll get everything done. I am sitting here wondering if I should read, play a game or start a knitting project... So little time in the day to do the fun stuff! What other challenges are you in?

Too many probably!!

I have been on Goodreads in these challenges for years and it gets easier to get used to it as you move along. :) And I agree - we ALL need more fun time in the day to get all these hobbies done - and sleep, right?

I do challenges in FLOAB, AMMP, Game Night, Turn the Page, My Vampire Book Obsession, and Hooked on Books - as well as here for Uno, and I join Team Towers every year over at Nothing But Reading Challenges, so really too many challenges to name!

Jennifer Osting | 87 comments I am looking to read this with my son next month. It works for a 1 (first in a series), or 2 (CFN- Taran) But curious what you would all say for color as I think it might be red/green?

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) Hm I am not sure. Definitely not enough red. May be enough green but it's iffy. If you took the red away almost everything is greenish
