MountainKat | 31598 comments Here is your next task!

Task 23 - 98. Read 8, 7 6 books with fewer than 10 letters in the title.

The books selected for this task need to have 9 or fewer letters in the title. Do not count punctuation or spaces, ampersands count as 1 letter.

MountainKat | 31598 comments I am so sorry for the delay! I was rushing and it just got missed, no excuses for that.

Because of the delay, I altered the task slightly - so you only need to read 6 books, not 7 as you would have if I hadn't messed up this morning.

Again, my apologies.

Review: ⭐⭐⭐.5 Written a few years after Twilight, this book has many similarities..a teen human girl (17), moves to a very small town in a heavily wooded area, meets non-human boy (17) who is very close to beautiful siblings. This time the boy is an alien. Boy and girl get together in a literally star crossed love affair, with woodsy dates, after he saves her from a deadly vehicle accident, while hordes of evil beings hunt them. See? Similar to Twilight.

Book/Author: Julie by Jean Craighead George
Pages: 244
How book qualified: 5 letters in title
Date Completed: 5-24
Rating/Review: ⭐⭐⭐⭐.25. I am doing an Alaskan cruise next week, so this is cruise/trip prep, since it is book 2 in the Julie series, following the life of a young Inuit woman living close to nature in Alaska. With many awards, I had put off doing this book because of the harshness of nature and animals dieing. If you ever need a book for a competition-here are some of its qualifying characteristics; set in Alaska, POC author-Native American, award winning.

Lea...you are an awesome teammate. But with work being busy, if you need a pass on this task, Jean and I have it covered. You may have to do the same for me next week. 🚢🛫🧳

Task 24 - 94. Read 6 5 books published in sequential years, teams decide years.

Books for this task need to be initially published in sequential years, for example 2010-2011-2012-2013-2014-2015. Teams decide which years to use. Please include the selected years in your completion posts along with which year your book was published. Remember to use the initial publication date. If there is a date listed at the top of the editions page use it, otherwise I will be looking for the earliest dated English language edition regardless of format for the qualification.

Qualification: published, April 14, 2020, team 5 year window 2023-2019, see link above
Pages: 400
Date: May 25, 2023
Review: ⭐⭐⭐⭐.5 A young bereaved woman falls in love with a stray dog, only to have its owner surface and pursue them both. A nice take on a romance involving a star singer, which doesn't involve gang sex or drugs. Abby Jimenez only has 5 books published, all in the last five years. All are written with a multi-layered style and cleverly crafted contemporary characters. All 5 of her books have become best sellers and run long wait lists at the public libraries.

Review: ⭐⭐⭐⭐.5 This is Food Network host Abby Jimenez's, award nominated, debut, best selling novel. It is book 1 in a 3 book series. I liked #s 2 and 3 so much, I broke a personal rule and bought this book so I could finish the series. (I have a rule that I do not buy books for challenges, but use library resources, ScribD, etc.) The series is only loosely linked, with just a common these of the female characters facing serious medical challnges.

The book is an efficient introduction to the characters that are instrumental to this vampire series. Just FYI - this book is from a spin off series, not the original BDB series. I am going to allow it, but technically to use a book like this there would need to be an overall 'world' series page listed on GR, not separate links.

Book/cover link: Secretly Yours by Tessa Bailey
Pages: 380
How book qualified: published February 7, 2023
Date Completed: 6-3
Rating/Review: ⭐️⭐️⭐️.5. I do not think Bailey's last two books have been as funny as her previous works. This one is a steamy story of an top R1 Univ. prof and his girly giggly gardening neighbor. FYI..having taught at Yale...the pressure to publish is extreme, so a bit unrealistic, certainly more demanding than the MC's faculty 30 minutes a day writing schedule could suffice. However, maladjusted men of that age being faculty, is very realistic. The early sections of the audiobook were burdened by a narrator with hissing "s" pronunciations. Also, the author is obviously NOT an avid gardner. A gardener "plants" perennial bulbs, they do not "bury" them; if they want them to bloom. So a technical editor would have enhanced the book.

Rating/Review: 🛳🛳🛳🛳..I give this cozy murder mystery of Southern Sisters visiting Destin FL 4 or 4.6 stars, because I loved the setting and I, like the main character, own vacation property in that area. The lightly bickering sisters are funny, in a Southern women over 40, realistic way. Besides, these mature women are on a close to water pleasure trip....females only....and so am I! The enjoyment of this series for me comes from the quipping sisters, not the murder mystery.
