February Subdue the Shelf Roll Requests

At least Olivermagnus is getting a break. Seems to me she had all the derailments ( OM's term) in her Clerk round

That sounds marvelous. If you add dancing and a piano bar with oldies (or show tunes), you have my idea of heaven.

I finally just posted the review for my book in position at #44. I rolled a 10 to reach #44 and got the following special move:
***Special Roll 10: you may leapfrog the three people immediately in front of you AFTER you move your 10 spaces and read the book there. ***
Currently the three people in front of me AFTER I moved 10 spaces and read the book are: #48 Chilli, #49 Tien and #54 BNB (not including a name in parentheses). So does that land me on #55, the leapfrog being one space after the 3 people ahead of me?
If so, now I rolled a 9 as my next roll thinking it would be #55 + the role which lands me at #64? Does that make sense or was the intention for me to read #55 after the leapfrog and then I can move forward with the roll?
Thanks for the guidance!!!
Or is Tien really at #61 and not #49 which would make the third person Nicole D at #56? Then same question with numbers revised accordingly.

2-2"
Thanks, Anita! I know - easy to miss (especially when I add extra "commentary")!

Hi Jen!
You've got it right when you said:
If so, now I rolled a 9 as my next roll thinking it would be #55 + the role which lands me at #64?
So you read your book. Now you leapfrog three people and add your next roll to that.
I will take a look at the master chart and report back on where I think you should leapfrog too before taking the next roll.
You do NOT need to read the book where you land on the leap.
UPDATE: Yes, #55 is where you leap to, and you don't need to read that. Take your next roll from there. So you have a 6-3 from 2/16, and you should take that move from the #55. So you are on and reading #64.

Thanks Anita!! Thought it would be best to walk through the thinking on that one.

Private Parlor and Royal Coach only have those amenities as rewards for making it so far down your boards.
However you can op out whenever we pass some of the resorts on the route and take a spa day.
As for Gnarly...it is well known fact that cats form strong attachments to those who like them least or have allergies. Never saw it fail. Example: my father had 2 cats, always off ignoring the humans, often outdoors (living on a farm they roamed). However when my nephew-in-law visited, who was severely allergic, Mickey would stay near him all the time - sit under or next to his chair. It was hilarious.
The opposite is true as well - they ignore those who most want to pet and cuddle them.

I have not seen a spa around, but we have only begun to discover the magical properties of the train. The cat found the secret tunnel from The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet. Gnarly has settled in for a nap and a bath.

Gnarly deserves it after proving what a clever and educated cat he is.
With so much rush to read and move on, many many features, secrets, and comforts of the StS Express have yet to be discovered. Even various deliveries have yet to arrive given the journey high speed and book distractions of those providing them.
To find the spa, you have to find yourself on The Third Level from Jack Finney's short story set in Grand Central Terminal.

Weird set of random rolls today, lol.

Oooh .... I actually have that book right here in the pile next to the computer desk!
Of course, I haven't even requested my # 38 yet because I have a couple of books for F2F book clubs to get through first. But Williams' book is something to look forward to!

Anita, this is a long one. I’ll send you the links I found to verify the length.

Yes, and very unfortunately, Joy is in the lead, so she sadly moved herself back three spaces. So sorry Joy!!!

We have Ellen about to leave Clerk for Porter after a turn in Locomotive.
And we have KateNZ, JoyD, and Hannah being fitted for their new uniforms as they approach Engineer level.
I expect there to be rowdy reunion in the Caboose soon.

Thanks Sue

Yep, it's nice to be able to read long books again. It's been awhile.

Example (for Porter level and above):
I roll a 2 for reading a book under 500 pages,
I roll three dice (5,4,3) for reading a longer book.
I assume, for game purposes I have rolled a (2,5) and a (4,3)
Is this correct or do we only count the first die for each roll request? If only the first, I have rolled a (2,5) and the others are superfluous.
ETA - Since I am on Pacific time and already started, I am going to read both the one I landed on and the one 3 spaces back.
ETAA - See Anita's clarification below.

The following rule was specified in my post Subdue the Shelf: What's Next:
You will still be eligible for special rolls, however a special roll will be designated by two adjacent rolls of the die
This rule needs some clarification beyond what was stated, but if you read it literally, you'll have it right. Here are the specifics, and I will provide an example below.
- Basically any two adjacent single die rolls may count as a special roll.
- If you roll two dice at a time due to reading a longer book, that would count as a standalone roll as before (clerk level).
- More than two dice don't count toward a special roll.
- If you roll a single die, and then roll more than a single die, the next roll of one die is not adjacent to the one you rolled before the multi-dice roll.
Example 1:
Person A rolls the following sequence
6
5
4
1
1
For special roll purposes, we would consider
6-5 (yes, special)
5-4 (not special)
4-1 (not special)
1-1 (special)
Example 2:
Person B rolls
6
5
4-4-1
1
For purposes of special rolls, we would consider
6-5 (special)
4-4-1 (not special)
and that's it. The 5 and 1 are NOT adjacent. More than two dice will not count as a special roll or in any way toward a special roll.
If the 4-4-1 was instead a two dice roll of 4-4, that would be considered a special roll.
Questions are welcomed!

Going forward I'm going to put the number of dice being rolled in parentheses to help avoid errors. As more people switch to higher levels, I think this will keep things going more smoothly.

More than two dice don’t count… good, I think that could get too complicated.

Here's the link for verification. This roll will take me off the end of the current board.

Awesome! Congrats on being the first Engineer. So impressive!!!
Just know that once you roll off officially, you will need a new roll to kick off your movement on that board.
You restart with 2 swaps, and retain any special awards you received from earlier boards that you haven't yet used.
p.s. How did you like the Auster book? I read it when it was nominated for the Booker prize. I thought it was a very interesting structure.

I really enjoyed the Auster book - gave it 4 stars! I need to read more of his catalogue - this was my first:

I did too! Sadly I lost my review of it (it was on a blog), but it stuck with me. I haven't tried any more from him, but agree that's a worthy goal!
