A Very English Murder is the first in the light-hearted, historical mystery series by Verity Bright, a husband and wife team. Lady Swift is young, adventurous, and good fun.

Finished The Last Time I Lied by Riley Sager, short review here: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I'm just finishing Ghosts of the Orphanage: A Story of Mysterious Deaths, a Conspiracy of Silence, and a Search for Justice by Christine Kenneally. I had preordered it way back when, and I'd started reading it just as I was finishing up listening to a great podcast about the Kuper Island School (CBC):
https://www.cbc.ca/listen/cbc-podcast...
Although Kenneally's book is amazing, dealing with all manner of personal issues suffered over time from adults who spent their childhoods at a particular orphange here in the US and another in Montreal, Canada. I was and am appalled because it seems that the same exact kind of horrors happened at many different places that were controlled by religious institutions.

Swann's Last Song
by Charles SalzbergHenry Swann is a down-at-the-heals skip tracer in New York who is hired by the beautiful widow of recently-murdered Harry Janus to find his killer. Nevertheless, the story doesn't take place in 1948. The book seems to be rather a modern-day reinterpretation of those older PI tropes we know and love. Lots of plot jammed into 227 pages and our hero stumbles around in New York, L.A., Acapulco, and Germany . And then the story just sort of ends. Interesting treatment but I can't give more than 3 stars.
The Detective Up Late
was the perfect end to the series. My four star review:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
The Lies She Told: A chilling crime thriller that will keep you guessing by Lynda Renham ⭐⭐⭐.7https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
North of Nowhere
is that rare bird - a believable thriller. My four star review:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Just finished a nice cozy mystery set in Charleston SC Gunpowder Green # 2 in the mystery Tea Shop series by Laura Childs.
Finishing up Phoebe Atwood Taylor’s The Cape Cod Mystery (1931), the first in her Asey Mayo series. I would call this cozy, but what really attracts me is the regionality. I LOVE Cape Cod, and highly specific regional settings for any type of crime fiction work like a charm for me - I’m big on the sense of place.

I agree with you about sense of place. For me, if it's really strong, it adds more to the story itself.

Murder Your Employer
by Rupert HolmerThis book follows the adventures of 3 students of the McMasters University of Murder as we learn their backstories as they learn how to commit murder and not get caught. Very very cute with page after page of adorable wordplay, jokes, puns, etc. told in rather a fey English style. Book is universally loved by everyone but me. All the cute wordplay is just not enough to carry almost 400 pages. I skimmed the last 100 pages -- a generous 3 stars.
Flags on the Bayou
by James Lee BurkeThis standalone novel by Burke is about the Civil War, and addresses the malevolence in humanity, exacerbated by the institute of slavery. The story revolves around Confederate and Union soldiers, plantation owners, slaves, abolitionists, etc.
Well-written and compelling. 4 stars

The Killer Angels: The Classic Novel of the Civil War by Michael Shaara
^ Loved The Power and the Glory. The Lawless Roads, although rudely perceptive about Mexico, is a very sour travel book; GG couldn’t wait to leave the country behind. Riding burros over mountains did not agree with him, and his empathy is at low ebb throughout. You can easily tell that his personality could be unattractive, even if it wasn’t always so.

I do love some of those older PI tropes. 🙂
Reading The Devil's Flute Murders by Seishi Yokomizo -- another in the Kosuke Kindaichi series. So far so good, and when I'm finished, I have the Japanese film to look forward to.
Just started The Between by Tananarive Due for another group's group read. I found her The Good House good and her Ghost Summer even better, so I'm looking forward to this, her first novel.
I read Season of the Gods by Robert Matzen It is an excellent reconstruction of the making of Casablanca. Highly recommended to movie buffs. My 4 star review https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I couldn't believe it was her first novel! She has another one coming later this year called The Reformatory based on the Dozier School in FL. It seems that she had some family members who were at the school in its horrific heydays.

I can't recommend Ghost Summer highly enough, especially the title novella. If I were editing an anthology of contemporary ghost stories, I'd want to include it.

Just finished Hugh Munro’s Who Told Clutha (1958), the first in his series about a Glasgow shipyard detective. From “Glasgow” and “shipyard”, you know it will be flavorful, and it is! I look forward to spending more time with Clutha, who is tough-savvy.Hugh Munro is not to be confused with Hector Hugh Munro (Saki) or Neil Munro (author of the Para Handy tales). Garry Disher is a favourite Aussie author whose offbeat Wyatt series features the crook. In Deathdeal, while avoiding his main enemies in Melbourne and Sydney, Wyatt is summoned to Queensland to pull off a job. I reckon you could read these out of order.
My review of Deathdeal
Saboteur is a very short story about a man who is arrested for no good reason and finds an unexpected way to deal with it. Great little read!

I read Spoils of the Dead by Dana Stabenow It is book 6 in the Liam Campbell Alaska State Trooper series. I recommend it to Alaska crime fans. My 4 star review https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I recently finished
Redemption Point by Candice Fox, the second book in the Crimson Lake series and another crazy thrill-ride in and around Cairns in Australia's Far North Queensland. My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
How It Unfolds by James S.A. Corey is the first quirky sci-fi story in The Far Reaches collection. How many lives can you live in how many different places?

Agatha Raisin and the Quiche of Death
by M.C. BeatonIn this first book in the long-running Agatha Raisin series, Agatha enters a 'ringer' in a quiche contest and the judge gets poisoned and dies.
Good introduction to the series. 3.5 stars

McMansion
by Justin ScottBen Abbott #4, OK to read as a stand-alone. A rich greedy developer has been killed and Ben is hired by his lawyer to help prove that the accused young man is not guilty. This is another very fine easy-going mystery with a delightful cast of characters and a plot that defies the reader's efforts to solve. I liked it a lot -- 4 stars.
