I'm just finishing Ghosts of the Orphanage: A Story of Mysterious Deaths, a Conspiracy of Silence, and a Search for Justice by Christine Kenneally. I had preordered it way back when, and I'd started reading it just as I was finishing up listening to a great podcast about the Kuper Island School (CBC):

https://www.cbc.ca/listen/cbc-podcast...

Although Kenneally's book is amazing, dealing with all manner of personal issues suffered over time from adults who spent their childhoods at a particular orphange here in the US and another in Montreal, Canada. I was and am appalled because it seems that the same exact kind of horrors happened at many different places that were controlled by religious institutions.

Araych | 677 comments Swann's Last Song Swann's Last Song (Henry Swann #1) by Charles Salzberg by Charles Salzberg

Henry Swann is a down-at-the-heals skip tracer in New York who is hired by the beautiful widow of recently-murdered Harry Janus to find his killer. Nevertheless, the story doesn't take place in 1948. The book seems to be rather a modern-day reinterpretation of those older PI tropes we know and love. Lots of plot jammed into 227 pages and our hero stumbles around in New York, L.A., Acapulco, and Germany . And then the story just sort of ends. Interesting treatment but I can't give more than 3 stars.

Patrick Finishing up Phoebe Atwood Taylor’s The Cape Cod Mystery (1931), the first in her Asey Mayo series. I would call this cozy, but what really attracts me is the regionality. I LOVE Cape Cod, and highly specific regional settings for any type of crime fiction work like a charm for me - I’m big on the sense of place.

I agree with you about sense of place. For me, if it's really strong, it adds more to the story itself.

Araych | 677 comments Murder Your Employer Murder Your Employer The McMasters Guide to Homicide by Rupert Holmes by Rupert Holmer

This book follows the adventures of 3 students of the McMasters University of Murder as we learn their backstories as they learn how to commit murder and not get caught. Very very cute with page after page of adorable wordplay, jokes, puns, etc. told in rather a fey English style. Book is universally loved by everyone but me. All the cute wordplay is just not enough to carry almost 400 pages. I skimmed the last 100 pages -- a generous 3 stars.

Barbara (cinnabarb) | 9974 comments Flags on the Bayou Flags on the Bayou by James Lee Burke by James Lee Burke

This standalone novel by Burke is about the Civil War, and addresses the malevolence in humanity, exacerbated by the institute of slavery. The story revolves around Confederate and Union soldiers, plantation owners, slaves, abolitionists, etc.

Well-written and compelling. 4 stars

Patrick ^ Loved The Power and the Glory. The Lawless Roads, although rudely perceptive about Mexico, is a very sour travel book; GG couldn’t wait to leave the country behind. Riding burros over mountains did not agree with him, and his empathy is at low ebb throughout. You can easily tell that his personality could be unattractive, even if it wasn’t always so.

I couldn't believe it was her first novel! She has another one coming later this year called The Reformatory based on the Dozier School in FL. It seems that she had some family members who were at the school in its horrific heydays.

Patrick Just finished Hugh Munro’s Who Told Clutha (1958), the first in his series about a Glasgow shipyard detective. From “Glasgow” and “shipyard”, you know it will be flavorful, and it is! I look forward to spending more time with Clutha, who is tough-savvy.

Hugh Munro is not to be confused with Hector Hugh Munro (Saki) or Neil Munro (author of the Para Handy tales). More info here: https://bearalley.blogspot.com/2010/1...

Ben Abbott #4, OK to read as a stand-alone. A rich greedy developer has been killed and Ben is hired by his lawyer to help prove that the accused young man is not guilty. This is another very fine easy-going mystery with a delightful cast of characters and a plot that defies the reader's efforts to solve. I liked it a lot -- 4 stars.
