I really like what you wrote and totally agree. If you look at a lot of books from this genre the second guy never gets the girl. Edward got Bella (Jacob was the second guy), Peeta got Katniss (Gale always felt that Peeta was better than he was) Jace got Clary (Simon was "inferior"). Day got June (Anden was less of a hero) I understand that Cal is the heroic brother, but I really want something that's less predictable to read.

You took the words right out ofmy mind!!!

I was always on Team Cal and love it. When i read that Mare would be marrying Maven I LITERALLY shouted my fucking lungs out, because Mare and Cal obviously like each other and need to be together. Plus, Maven is a stupid BASTERS with a BITCH for a mother who made his brother KILL HIS FATHER!!! Can you say cruel?! I mean like come on Cal is so awesome and talented and funny and cute and they are PERFECT for each other. If ther is anyone that feels the same pleas tell me because in my country the book isn't really "big". Yet. And none of my friends have read it and I need someone by my side.

I agree. I think it would be so different from what we usually read in YA. It would be an epic twist and something very unpredictable. For once just because a guy was the first love interest it should not be written in stone for him to get the girl. I hope Victoria goes along this direction. A recent series I read did go like this and I was pleased...

I used to be on Maven's side, but I find Maven to be too suspicious. His relationship with his mother just hits me in the wrong way... (And I read that one reader believes it to be an Oedipus Complex, and I'm slightly leaning that way, too. But it will be RQ3 that will reveal all.) Still, he is undeniably intriguing with his shifty and dark ways, but his actions in Glass Sword completely disgust me. (Then again, Cal could swing the same, dark way, albeit he'll probably do it with a little more consideration. Cal is more of a guy who does whatever is necessary to get the job done, and I have a feeling that he might even be one of those "Sacrifice lives of the few to save the many.")
But Maven... Maven has a ridiculously long list of crimes against him. Killing children, destroying anyone as long as he can get to Maven, wiping out families, sending off children to war, and being absolutely ruthless when it comes to his very brother. (At least, Cal cares about him.)
(And Mare probably can join him on the dark side, but that's a conversation for another time. You're welcome to have that conversation with me. She is more of a soldier/commander in Glass Sword, and she plows down anyone between her and her goal.)
Cal, on the other hand, is someone I'm actually warming up to. Intelligent, not as princely as he was, changing... I'm looking forward to his moments, to be truthful. At the end of Red Queen, I was more of a Team Maven girl, but now, I think Cal is a far better choice. Voice of reason (though he is only human, of course), and with experience and time and understanding (from him to those around him), I'm sure that he won't be a bad choice at all.

*GS spoilers*
Totally agree!
I feel like the book might be going in the direction with Mare and Maven too. In Glass Sword, we see Mare get darker and more ruthless (though, she kind of has to be) and people compare her as bad as Maven and such. She does have a sort of redemption moment though when she realises this and promises not to be so like that. But at the same time, she is probably going to try and take down Maven or escape in the next book. What I'm really looking forward to in the third book is getting to know Maven more and his 'transformation' into an evil character because we don't get much in Glass Sword.
I really did warm to Maven in Red Queen before you-know-what happens. It's very complicated now for there to be a romantic relationship I think, because everyone's at war now and Maven really has done a lot of bad things. In my opinion, I feel his character is almost at the point past redemption - which I feel many people are hoping for.
I always liked Cal, but I'll say it again. Something less predictable would be if Mare ends up with no one. It would be realistic too, because it is hard to have that sort of relationship when war is going on and you don't know what is going to happen next.
I hope Mare doesn't go all dark with Maven or end up with him - unless he has some serious redemption. Because then, it kind of means she is sort of dismissing his past actions and is almost as bad as him. If she joins with Maven (when he's still the bad guy), it will make her a very un-likable character.
I do understand though, why she thinks a lot about Maven in GS. I do think she is still getting over how Maven isn't who she thought he was. They did grow close, and tbh I didn't see it coming either.

Hmm... Maybe the author would leave the end of the series open. But the Maven x Mare ship has gone past dark and into the dangerous forest with wild beasts.
Does Glass Sword sort of remind you of The Rose Society (Marie Lu)? I felt it did. Except for the fact that Mare hasn't gone as far as the narrator from The Rose Society.

True. But that hungry for power thing is just... Hmm... I think Maven himself has gone pretty far.

I am blinded by love because you're right, Maven is pretty far from redemption. I saw what you posted above about the Glass Sword reminding you of The Rose Society. We have Mare trying to figure out her powers as well, which path she will take? Who knows especially with Aveyard.

Exactly. I think it's safe to say that Maven has fallen farther than Warner (Shatter Me).

Amen to that. Like, sure, he might have some good deep deep down in his soul, but if he doesn't finally redeem himself... He's just gone too far.

This made me laugh so hard. Thank you for making my day. :p
I like Maven a lot but not as the boyfriend, hahaha

I definitely think Maven has a chance to redeem himself. There are still two more books and I believe ( and desperately hope) that Mare will use this time to figure out what is going on and try to fix him. I still know that deep down he still loves her and he was hurt in book 1 when he realised that she had feelings for Cal.

Definitely agree about the whole Maven and his mom thing. Most people are like; "Yeah, Maven and Mare are meant for each other." Are you serious? Like, no joke, are you serious? Maven is a complete jerk... Cal is the right one, I believe. C'mon people. GET WITH THE PROGRAM!

YESSSSSSSSSS!!!!!

He is so much better than Maven, who treats her like crap all the time. I don't see how Mare can ever end up with Maven!!

I hope not, honestly.

I HOPE SOOOOO!!

But that's just my opinion :)

But she also loved the boy in the shadow. Maven is cruel. No doubt about that but so is cal. Cal could be like maven also. If he hadn't met Mare in the beginning of RQ. I think she'll end up with Cal, However Many will disagree with me on this. Mare is still reeling from the betrayal Maven I think really captured her heart. I n my opinion Maven may not be good he is cruel but I think his character can be far more realistic than Cal. I believe Cal to be the ideal. Maven is the reality. I believe the love Mare and possibly Maven was real. The both fell for eachother slowly with Cal it was instantaneous Cal may be endgame but Maven is one interesting character.

That's EXACTLY how I feel!!

I don't know. I'm completely dumbfounded over all of this. However, I would ultimately say that Cal is the best match for Mare. Not that Kilorn and Maven are stupid, harsh, or plain old evil (they're pretty amazing too, you don't need to be crown prince to win a person's heart) .
Here's why I think Cal would be Mare's knight in shining armor (now that I look at it this way, I see my OTPs are completely falling apart xD) :
Cal and Mare were actually (to me) closer than any of the other pairings. Cal was also more loyal to her, and seemed, as #herondale_rysand mentioned, 'attracted' to her.
Maven, on the other hand, seemed to make a show of how dumb Mare and Cal were to trust him and was completely ready to murder both of them (then proceed to take over the kingdom) .
And Kilorn... Oh Kilorn. He's officially been friend-zoned (as other people have mentioned), and it seems as if Mare already has enough to handle, then Kilorn's there, just tagging along. His character also just annoys me, and I'm honestly not sure why Aveyard included him in the book. Perhaps he'll play a bigger role later (sorry Kilorn+Mare shippers...).
So, even though I don't exactly love any of these pairs, Cal and Mare would probably be the best.
