The Mistake
Read: 4/19/22
Rated: 4 stars
Review: It took me a couple of chapters to really get into the book, but I fell in love with the characters right away. From Grace's sweet but sarcastic commentary to Logan's stupid mistakes and eventual romantic gestures. I really like how the book spanned almost an entire year, where they developed their relationship, rather than a couple of months. I don't think it was as good as the first book in the series but it was nice to be able to see old characters as well as new ones.

Him (Him, #1) by Sarina Bowen by Sarina Bowen & Elle Kennedy

Finsihed on: 4/20
Rated: 4 stars

When I was first introduced to MM I knew I had found something I would NEVER be able to let go of. I am well and truly obsessed with the gay romance trope and I honestly have not read one MM book I did not enjoy, obviously some more than others to be fair. BUT I did not hop on the train and then fall for just one type of MM story. I love them all. And Him has so many of my boxes checked; Friends to lovers with a touch of rivalry, bi-awakening, sports romance. And I am a sucker for hockey so this just tops it all off. Our two hockey hotties are Jamie Canning and Ryan Wesley and I truly enjoyed them equally. This story takes us on the path of reconnection & love with memoires of childhood friendship thrown in which was so effectively sweet and added to Jamie and Ryan's love. The build up of their personalities and relationship was spot on. They had amazing and completely sexy chemistry. I was hooked. there was that plot arc where you wonder if it all comes together (while also knowing it will) they gives you some of that needed heartache for the MC's but then ending, well it was everything!

I’m sad as I write this because I think of this series fondly, but I absolutely hated this book. It all felt like filler to me, where while there was lots of action happening in this book, it seemed all so pointless and did not move the series forward at all. I was bored, and just wanted the book to be over.

I love the characters of Rule and Lily, who drive the heart of this series, but sometimes a series goes on for too long and an author doesn’t know how to wrap up the threads - and instead sometimes starts throwing in random characters and mini plots that don’t matter to the overall arc of the story. And that was very much the case here. I hated the new characters Demi and Weng, and felt like Demi dominated more of this book than the supposed MCs Rule and Lily. And this whole thing with Ruben’s “change” and now Rule is the #2 guy under Ruben at the Shadow Unit while he’s still the #2 guy at the Nokolai clan and from a couple books back also the #1 guy at Leidolf clan, etc. At some point it just all feels ridiculous and like the author has jumped the shark. Don’t think I’ll be continuing on.

Review: I really enjoyed the 1st book in the series - but LOVED this one. Khai’s mother meets Esme cleaning the toilets in Vietnam and decides she would be perfect for her odd youngest son back in the USA. Khai is on the Autistic spectrum but his family has just written him off as strange. Now they want him married. Esme has a few reasons for accepting, one of which is her toddler daughter and the other is finding her American father. Esme falls in love with Khai (has no understanding of Autism) but she gradually understands his vulnerability while bringing order to his rigid world. Having an Autistic grandson, I really related to Khai’s character (not that I’m trying to marry my grandson off) and think that everyone needs an Esme in their life. Didn’t know until the very end whether the two of them would get their HEA but certainly spent the whole book wanting them to make it.

Review:

I adore Eliot Grayson. I have come to expect nothing but short, steamy, well written MM romance from her. I always appreciate her wording, not too complex but with her personality clearly blending within. I have come to expect that I will always walk away loving the characters and how they fall in love. James and Leo are no different. This has a London setting with Rogues and Gentleman and Earls galore. There are horse drawn carriages, waistcoats and top hats, and there is love making by firelight. How could you not love? And one of the hero's is a writer while the other works for a small publishing house. I loved that aspect. There is a insta-love feel but also time in between said love and some enemy vibes before the declarations to make it believable. I found out this was her first ever book published so I have to say it is really good and still true to Grayson writing which I love.

I enjoyed revisiting with Cole & Jae (and the secondary characters as well) but the overall story/mystery was kind of boring. Also there was not enough Cole & Jae time for me. Overall tt wasn't terrible, and the narration was excellent, I will continue with another book in the series if one comes to pass but i am not anxiously awaiting it.

Review- I really liked this book. I loved the writing and the way the story was told. Easy to follow all the timelines. I loved the characters but there was cheating in this book and the thing is cheating happens BUT when you are dumb enough to bring your mistress around your children that is messed up. Mess up your own life but don't bring it around clueless smart kids. Lydia figured her dad out quick. It hurt her and she was angry at her dad and her mom. Kids need a place to lash out and her mother was faultless. Her mom wasn't a Saint but she didn't cheat! The ending will surprise you. It did me

The Accidental Countess by Emma Hart
Date Completed: 4/20/2022

I was pretty much thinking this read was in the bland but “not bad” territory until I hit the halfway point. Then we were introduced to the hero’s grandmother, Nan, who became obsessed in thinking that her new granddaughter-in-law of two weeks was pregnant, or maybe it was her twin, she couldn’t tell enough between their “auras”. So every scene with her became obnoxious and everyone would just shake their head and say “that’s just grandma” as she would continually say rude things and even sneak into the couple’s bedroom suite and steal a used pregnancy test from the bathroom trash to prove whether or not her new granddaughter-in-law was telling the truth in not being pregnant.

I know these kinds of characters are written by authors to try to be funny, but I absolutely hate the forced “quirky” character they often write with this type of effort and it ends up being instead not funny at all and off-putting. And I haven’t gotten into the non-stop PMS jokes that started creeping into the book about the halfway point as well. It’s like her editor or beta reader received the first half of the book manuscript and told the author to crank up the humor, and we got potty humor and a crass pregnancy obsessed grandma. How charming.

What an impressive debut novel! I very much enjoyed the story of Andrew & Jamie as the try to survive life after a deadly pandemic kills most of the population. They are both young and communication is hardly a strong point for either character but I enjoyed watching the relationship develop. Lots of action and and tense situations which is to be expected. I have seen the author on social media talking about a sequel and I would absolutely grab that as soon as it was available. I very much enjoyed this story, definitely recommend it.

Narration was good, I liked one narrator more than the other but neither were bad.

There is one task I cannot do (14) - but I won’t know if I need a pass until after it has been called.

The Rule on the Pass Option
* Each team can only have ONE member using their pass each week.
* Each member can only use that pass once each 5 weeks.
* This means that one or two team members (dependent upon the size of your team) will miss using a pass in each 5 week block.
* No-one can use the pass option in the last week of the challenge.
* In the final week Option 2 has altered and I will be allocating each team another team from which their book selection must be chosen :)

Forever, Con Amor (For Him, #4) by A.M. Johnson Forever, Con Amor by A.M. Johnson
326 Pages

My rating: 5 Stars
My Review:
OMG Forever, Con Amor Book 4 in the For Him series...absolutely AMAZING! Hands down my favorite, this couple was just E.V.E.R.Y.T.H.I.N.G. A.M. Johnson went out with a bang and I couldn't be happier I picked up this series. From the start all these characters have resonated with me in a lot of different ways but...Marcos and Chance have truly taken a piece of my heart for themselves. They were perfect together, they were wonderful characters on their own and they completely owned this series in my opinion.

Marcos. We met him in Dear, Mr. Brody as Parker's ride or die, loud and proud, fashionista best friend. He truly has a heart of gold and all the shine. I love him, I love him. I loved him as the BFF sidekick and I loved him even more as the star of this book. I love how he is unapologetically himself, as everyone should be, in his heels with his makeup and flashy wardrobe. I love his sass, his humor, his quick wit, and his soft spots, especially for the kids he is helping as a volunteer at Pride House and in the LGTBQ Community. I loved how Parker was still a big presence in Marcos's life even if he isn't on the pages, their friendship is important and never diminishes. I felt for Marcos when he lost not only his apartment to the fire but then his boutique job and then feels like the other shoe has to drop at any point. Bad things come in threes usually, but not in this case. In this case he has a certain big hearted giver named Chance who offers something he really can't refuse, a place to stay and a potential friend. Marcos has so many fun and snarky moments I lost count and most were directed at our hippy, "save the world", give-it-my all hero, Chance.

Chance. God did I love this man! When we met him in Not So Sincerely Yours, I suppose it wasn't the best introduction for him leaving Ethan to give himself to others in need rather than stay and love Ethan how he should have. Ethan got HEA and has his forever in Anders so I was so happy to see Chance get his. And the pairing?? Would you think these two would be soul mates? They have so little in common but they compliment each other beautifully. Chance is a sweet man with a heart that he gives to so many. He wants to help those in need and he has sacrificed his loved ones to do so most of his life. He lost Ethan, his only love and he barely sees his family. But now he is ready to stay in one place, still do good but lay down his roots and find his forever. That place is with Pride House as the Director. He has no idea what the forever looks like but when he meets the insanely magnetic Marcos with his sharp tongue and flirty eyes he is truly a goner. It does not take him long to crave Marcos and when the man needs somewhere to live you better believe Chance jumps at the opportunity to share walls with the flirt himself.

I had no idea I was going to love these two as much as I did. I am still gushing over them and their unlikely friendship that turns into more. I loved their dynamic, they both had so much fun with each other and I loved Koda the happy husky who completes their little family. Their build up was perfect. Their walks in the morning with Koda and their working together at Pride House and their nights together as roommates. Dear lord that yoga shesh...JUST PERFECT. I appreciated that they didn't just jump in and act on their attraction and I actually thought it was so cute how it all went down on Chances birthday with Marcos cooking him dinner. Their IG conversations where cute and a toned down version of the emails we have seen in the other books which I liked a lot. Their chemistry is intense and one I found myself thinking I needed more of no matter how long that made the book! Johnson really kicked up the heat in this one! I loved how they both found themselves attracted to things about each other they never found sexy before. Like Marcos being femme in a sexy lien but toned way and then with Chance being all hippy, cargo short, earth scented outdoors man, neither gravitated to that in the past. It was sweet to see it now. And I just loved how Marcos teases Chance with his bootie sleep shorts around the house and how when Chance got all dressed up he was too good to resist. I love when they speak Spanish together as well!

Stop me now because I could go on and on. What I wished we saw more of was Chance and his relationship with his sister. I thought we would get another Jay in that aspect and we really didn't and I was disappointed. I really appreciated how we got to see all the characters at one point in this last book. I was happy to see Anders and Chance mend their bridges and how Chance and Ethan found their closure. I loved all the Pride House characters and in the end we get a little note from Johnson that just brightened my day because it gave me hope we will see more of this world. For now I will say again that Marcos and Chance stole the show for me and honestly I am still obsessed and want back in on their love. I will miss them the most. Their ending...I dare you not to gush! This was a fantastic ending to this series and I am so glad to say I know I have found a forever author in A.M. Johnson. Her writing is beautiful, detailed, consuming, and smile inducing.

Beneath the Surface (The Emperor's Edge, #5.5) by Lindsay Buroker
Beneath the Surface by Lindsay Buroker

Rating: 4⭐️

I absolutely adore this series, and I already know am going to be sad once I finish up the series with the next two books. Amaranthe and Sicarius can just do no wrong as characters, and I love the eclectic gang she has put together to try to save the empire.

Although technically a novella, this felt more in depth, and I appreciated that in addition to Amaranthe’s point of view we also finally got to see things from Sergeant Yara’s perspective, and see the relationship between her and Maldynado develop. As always when Amaranthe’s around, a conspiracy is afoot and things tend to get blown up. And amidst all this, we finally start to see Sespian thaw a little in his intense hatred of Sicarius. So all in, I really enjoyed this novella and felt like it pushed the overall story forward in advance of the upcoming finale books.

Review: Cornwall at Christmas - what more could I ask for? A sweet romance that didn’t quite hit the spot but still kept me wanting to know what happens. Grace’s parents have moved to Conwenna Cove from Wales and Grace is helping them settle in. She is escaping after a broken relationship so not looking for a new man and certainly not the grumpy rude Oli that she meets in the Cafe. Oli is the local vet and recently widowed, bringing up two young children. Eventually, of course, the barriers start to come down but there are a few hiccups to overcome before their HEA.

Review:
I absolutely loved the relationship between Rhett and Grayson. It was real and heartbreaking. There were times during the book that reminded us the relationship was fictional and I felt like the author jumped around after their relationship got more serious. It was like one chapter they were graduating and then next chapter Grayson was going to college. The chapters were short which were nice to read but I also feel like there wasn't enough details.

I struggled with my rating here but eventually settled on 4 stars because it is terrible being a teenager. Randy/Del "reinvented" himself to attract Hudson at summer camp and I was so sad that he felt the need to do so. The book tackles some very important and difficult topics, stereotypes, toxic masculinity, parents who are not so supportive, etc. I found this book difficult to read, Randy feeling it was necessary to give up his preferred activities to be more "masculine", I hated that he lied to Hudson for more than half of the book and had others in on it with him and although they were not on page a lot I hated Hudson's parents. I know I am making this sound super heavy and while there are serious topics discussed/addressed it is a book about teens at a summer camp. Would recommend the audio as well, new to me narrator and I enjoyed the performance.
