Amy | 12932 comments Minor Announcement! I think we should wait until the end of December to start the Official Thread, to give more people time to join, construct their lists, and switch things around. When the Official Thread is posted, there will be the final and ongoing list of buddy reads, the wheel of monthly trim pickers, (the first 22 that sign up, and already we are up to like 18) and that will be the place the monthly number is announced.

But for this month only, Joanne, (who gets to pick twice) is going to randomly select our January number, and post it right here on this thread, so that those who are eager to get started with their planning or library ordering, do not have to wait for the official thread to begin. She can post it anytime after Anita posts the January tag. Thinking ahead, I will be on a plane tomorrow heading West, so I thought it was best to think this one through in advance. Hope everybody feels comfortable with that plan. Love to all, and Merry Christmas to those who celebrate. A beautiful Shabbat and Weekend for all.

Kelly, I'd like to have a buddy read of One of Us Is Lying with you. But I have another buddy read at number 2. Would you mind switching it to number 1 if you want to read this book together?:)

So everyone can plan (and we are a fastidious group of planners-LoL)

The 1st book for 2022 is #10

Happy Happy Holidays to one and all may 2022 be a very special reading year for you!

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 8424 comments Amy ... it would be helpful if you could create a direct link to each participant's posted list. Some of us are on page one, others on page 2 or page 3 of this thread.

Directions for creating a link are in the (some html is ok) menu, on the far right, just above the comment box where you type a new comment.

message 110: by Book Concierge (new)

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 8424 comments Oh, I'd even add a suggestion that you do this in the NEW thread, so we have a handy reference in the place we're supposed to be announcing the # of the month and posting our progress / reviews.

I add some books to do buddy reads with you...
1. Not a buddy read but I added Die Trying #2 in the series
11. All Adults Here
22. Firefly Lane

message 113: by Sue (new)

Sue | 2724 comments Yay for #10!

Artemis by Andy Weir - fits the monthly tag and we get to have an Andy Weir buddy read-a-thon!

I've already read The Martian, but may add Project Hail Mary to read as well.

message 114: by Joanne (new)

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12589 comments My #10 is The Last Collection: A Novel of Elsa Schiaparelli and Coco Chanel-hoping it is a light read as I have 3 chunksters going into January

message 115: by Theresa (last edited Dec 23, 2021 11:05AM) (new)

Theresa | 15568 comments Thank you, JoAnne! Gives me a science for monthly tag! My #10 is The Martian and yes, we have an Andy Weir buddy read! If I like The Martian I might add Project Hail Mary. I already read Artemis. I will open the buddy read thread.

message 116: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12932 comments I think I have all of those changes ready to upload. And I will do that when I get to my destination later since I’m now moved from plane to car.

But the important thing to note is for Kellie, who I might just message on one form or another. Because she has project Hail Mary on her list at 16, and should know there is this Project Hail Mary Trim thing happening at 10 this very month like right now!

I’m also going to join her for stranger in the lifeboat number three. The only thing left that was confusing is that if Diana has Kelly move One of Us is Lying to number one, then Charlotte and Kelly just need to figure out a different match up for Lee Child’s.

message 117: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12932 comments On the issue of creating links to our posts, it is absolutely not a close conversation by any means, but I’m inclined to wonder about the utility of that for this thread, as it will probably only be really in use for another week or so. Anyone creating or moving around their lists are either comparing it to their own, or to the buddy list in message one. Yes it might take a lot of work to re-read the thread and make sure you haven’t missed anything, but it’s a probably a lot more work for me to post up individual links peoples lists. Especially since I don’t know how. I’m willing to learn it for the official thread, but I’m also curious about the utility of that? I’d love to hear what you have in mind.

So for the official thread we will be using, let’s think about what kind of links might be useful. Message one will have the entire list of buddy reeds plus the wheel of rotating trim pickers. And we are now 19 out of 22 participants with Kelly. To be clear, if more than 22 people sign up, that’s not a problem in terms of participating, it just means that you didn’t sign up in time to get to be a trim picker. So I imagine the important pages of the official thread will be the very first message, and the last few of any month that will be the announcement of the number. I saw it less for reviews, and certainly no lists but more of a community building thread. What and which links were you hoping the official thread might post? I am curious to hear more.

message 118: by Jenni Elyse (new)

Jenni Elyse (jenni_elyse) My #10 is Anxious People. It’s a buddy read, I think. Cool.

message 121: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12932 comments You are more than on time! This is the kind of challenge folks can get in on whenever they please, but you are right at the start!

I only caught the buddy read with Joanne at 24, and I added myself for Lady Clementine with you at #1. Were there others I didn’t catch? Uploading the whole list in a few hours with yours, Charlotte, and Kelly…. Still in the car driving over a snowy mountain pass!

I’ve just quickly skimmed through all the lists, and I think there is also The Cactus at 6 with Kelly, and The Song of Achilles at 22 with Joanne.

Driving over a snowy mountain pass sounds amazing - I hope you stay safe and warm!

Hannah! Great will surely enjoy all three reads with you!

Amy | 12932 comments Came into Wi-Fi again, 47 minutes to home! Adding those two for the big upload later!

message 126: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12932 comments Those two are added in to the master list for the later upload. I just had a thought about the links again. Maybe it makes sense on our real next thread, right there in message one, to have a link to this thread, so anybody who either wants to reference back, or to join in and create a list of their own, and see if it matches up with anyone, or what have you. So you don’t have to go searching and footnotes for it, because this thread is going to become quite inactive.

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 8424 comments I participate in a LOT of challenges.

In virtually all of them, the basic rules / tasks / instructions for the challenge are outlined in thread # 1 (and sometimes # 2).

The next thread is reserved for a list of participants, typically listed in alphabetical order ... and the challenge coordinator creates a link for each participant so that they can go directly to their challenge posts without having to search through three or four pages of posts to find where they put their list and update it.

In our case ... having each participant's list as a created link in an early thread would allow any of us to check each other's lists that much more easily without worrying that we missed "Jughead's" post on page 4.

Here's a sample of what I mean For this particular challenge you can click on my name and see that it takes you to page 9, post # 436.

Heather Reads Books (gothicgunslinger) | 862 comments My #10 is either Imposter Syndrome by Kathy Wang or The Once and Future King by T.H. White. I thiiink I'm going to give The Once and Future King a shot, as I think it will be paired nicely with the beginning of our ASOIAF reread.

We'll see how ambitious I'm feeling after the holidays...

I have 3 choices The Last Ship, Extreme South or Atlantis Found They are all longish but I think I'll start with The Last Ship (I saw the TV series and liked that so we'll see if the book follows the usual rule of being better) which is the longest one.

Might do them all since it is the quiet month for work but will also still be finishing ATY due to having too many 700pg+ ones this year and not enough hours to read them all. 2021trim is the only unofficial one I did and the only challenge I might finish.

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11085 comments Amy, can you please add me to the Buddy read lists for:
#1- Apeirogon
#10- Weir book if I can get it in time
#21 The Forty Rules of Love
#21The Giver of Stars - I just read it, and I'd love to join the discussion.

I might also add to the discussions of 1-Lady Clementine, 2-Euphoria, 15- Klara and the sun, 24- Once there were wolves, and perhaps others.

Is anyone else planning to read Louise Erdrich books this year? If so I'd love to set up buddy reads. She's the author of the year in the diversity group, so I plan to read several:
The Round House
The Sentence - I just read it, and would love to discuss it. It's in the 2022 Book Tournament too.
The Night Watchman
Many of her earlier books too.

I don't have a formal list yet.
