When You’re Not Reading a Cozy
Finished reading
One Day in December by Josie SilverA cozy romance⭐⭐⭐
My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I've read (and am reading) a slew of non-cozies this week.
The Elusive Mrs. Pollifax (borderline cozy) was very good, as usual.
A Man Called Ove = excellent!
The Death of Lucy Kyte - very good but very heartbreaking
The Love Hypothesis - a really good romance with a science theme, which in itself was refreshing
Vanderbilt - now reading
I finished reading Inherent Truth
by Alicia Anthony. Supernatural romantic suspense or psychic romantic suspense. Overall, this novel had exciting scenes, compelling, but flawed characters, and some heartrending moments. My 3.5 star rounded up to 4 stars review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Finished three non-cozies in the past week.
* The Betrayal of Anne Frank: A Cold Case Investigation by Rosemary Sullivan. I found this book interesting, and despite recent criticism, found nothing wrong with the methodology or conclusion. I learned a lot about life in the Netherlands before, during and after WWII. Completely plausible suspect, and as the project director said, “circumstantial evidence is still evidence.” People have been convicted on less. Used for the Popsugar Challenge (book published this year).
* Military Grade Mistletoe by Julie Miller, older rom-suspense. Used for my “holiday” book, here and for the Popsugar Challenge.
* Persuasion by Jane Austen. A reread for me, and one I thoroughly enjoyed. Classic group read, but also ticked off a Popsugar prompt (book becoming a movie this year).

(aka
)I usually am hitting romance when not reading cozies. I just finished rereading Wild Devotion (aka March Wind) by Mari Carr -- AGAIN. It's one of my favorite stories.
I'm actually working my way through both "Irish" series, Wild Irish and Wilder Irish, again. They tell the stories of the Collins family, the children and grandchildren, respectively, of patriarch Patrick Collins.
Every so often a line or scene from one of these books pops into my head. I grab the book intending to just reread the scene or whatever, but wind up reading the entire book. That pretty much leads to reading the two series again -- as if I don't have more than enough new reads awaiting me.
If you haven't read them, I highly recommend both series. While there are some stories I love more than others, I enjoy reading all of them. They're go-to, feel-good stories I revisit often.
Ms. Carr is working on another series, Italian Stallions, that comprises stories of an Italian family who appear in -- and are related to characters from -- the Wilder Irish stories. There is only one book in the series (to date), with another due in June. Though it can be read as a standalone series, I'd recommend reading the two "Irish" series first.
My Original Review of Wild Devotion/March Wind
Currently reading The Maidens by Alex Michaelides which I feel is not as good as his first book, The Silent Patient. Next up is a syfy book, Middlegame by Seanan McGuire. Love the cover.

Here is my review of A Blizzard of Polar Bears
by Alice Henderson. Alice Henderson has become my favorite author that emphasizes facets of nature in a crime thriller. Overall, this combined mystery, nature, the environment, action adventure, and survival into one fantastic crime novel. My 5 star review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Finished reading
Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia OwensA fiction novel ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Once Upon Another Time by James Riley https://www.goodreads.com/review/show... It's a fun middle grade fantasy book.

Mark wrote: "And now for something completely different...."I thought this would be followed up by something by Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, or Michael Palin. :o)
Or at least Who Murdered Chaucer?: A Medieval Mystery (by Jones, and not a cozy!)...

I’ve only read five or six of his books (so far), but have liked those read. He’s not always an easy read, and some of his books are quite long, but I like him.

Finishing out the week with
Around the World in 80 Days by Jules Verne https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Mark, I read that at the end of last year and loved it!
I listened to another non-cozy this week, the YA fantasy novel A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula K. Le Guin. This was a free audiobook I found on YouTube, and I enjoyed listening to it in between reading two other books.

Enola Holmes and the Elegant Escapade
by Nancy Springer is the 8th book in the Enola Holmes series. This series brings together Sherlock Holmes and his much younger sister Enola in a teen / young adult historical mystery set in and around London in late 1889. The author blends suspense, a bold protagonist, and humor in this latest case for Enola. My 4 star review:

Read two children’s classics this week by Maud Hart Lovelace. First up was Betsy-Tacy,, as it has a birthday party in it. And then, because you can’t read the first without wanting to read the second, Betsy-Tacy and Tib. Both were fun reads, but the second especially had a couple chapters that had me both horrified and LMAO.
And then I went in a completely different direction and listened to/read The Art of War by Sun Tzu while working. This wasn’t for any challenges, but it is frequently mentioned in literature and pop culture, and it’s one of the books from the Classics group’s bookshelf I had not read.
