When You’re Not Reading a Cozy
I just picked up Three Women by Lisa Taddeo again - started it in the summer and lost interest about halfway through...But I want to finish it, especially since it's going to be a TV series. Hopefully I enjoy more this time around.
My review for
The Last House on the Street by Diane Chamberlainhttps://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I finished reading a memoir by a remarkable woman. Raising the Bar: A Lawyer's Memoir
by Ruth Rymer.My 4 star review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Finished reading:
My Grandmother Sends Her Regards and Apologises by Fredrik Backman
A fantasy book ⭐⭐⭐

Brenna wrote: "Karen M wrote: "Just started reading an ARC of The Paris Apartment by Lucy Foley. Just like The Guest List multiple POVs which I am sorting out afte..."This one is so good. The author at the beginning gives you what you think is so much and then leads you through a maze that you keep questioning what's going on, love it!
Spent the bulk of the day reading Austenland by Shannon Hale. Fun read! It has me wanting to watch — not Pride and Prejudice, but Lost in Austen — although the first wouldn’t be so bad, either. (And for the record, I prefer the Kiera Knightly/Matthew McFadyen movie time the BBC series, though I have both).
Finished Dark Tales by Shirley Jackson, a collection of short stories that I alternately read and listened to. Definitely recommend if you like short stories that are a bit dark and creepy (but not scary).
Abandoned by Allison Brennan 5-StarsMax finally learns the why of her mother's disappearance.
My Review
Reading The Paid Bridesmaid now - found it on Kindle Unlimited so thought why not - it's a pretty basic, predictable romance
I started reading A God Against the Gods by Allen Drury. This book and the sequel, Return to Thebes have been sitting in one bookcase or another for years (since 1984 I think). Don't know if I'll read the sequel anytime soon but it will be one less book I never got around to reading!!
I finished Wards of Faerie
by Terry Brooks. It's the first book in the Dark Legacy of Shannara series and a good start to the series. After reading several books that I felt "meh" about, it is nice to have one I really enjoyed.
I finished The Scarlet Forest: A Tale of Robin Hood
by A.E. Chandler. My 4 star review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I had to read The Sword of Shannara in an honors English class in high school as and in comparison to J.R.R. Tolkien's The Fellowship of the Ring in the genre of fantasy-writing. I purchased the entire trilogy (at the time) thinking I'd read it all. However, I just could not get into the story. I don't know why. I purchased a few others as the series expanded thinking I'd start again and read the series. Still could not get into it.
There was a "Shannara" TV series released within the past few years. I was going to try to watch it thinking it could kick me back to the books, but got a few episodes behind and just couldn't garner enough interest to binge it.
I guess Shannara is dead to me at this point.
For something completely different, I am finishing up the week with a devotional:
Singing in the Dark by Ginny Owens https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Finished two more non-cozies today: an older romance unearthed from Mount TBR, Once Upon a Valentine's by Holly Jacobs and a reread of the play Cyrano de Bergerac by Edmond Rostand. The latter was one of the February selections for a classics group, and now has me wanting to (re)watch a couple of different movie versions, including the modern retelling, “Roxanne.”
Enjoyed a middle grade mystery -
Forbidden City by James Ponti https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I watched the first episode of the Shannara series. It was so different than the book it was supposed to be based on that I didn't like it. I don't even think I finished the first episode.
My 4 star review of Tough Justice
by Tee O'Fallon:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Romantic suspense.
I finished An Atlas of Extinct Countries
by Gideon Defoe.My 2 star review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Juggling two really good books, one I started and then realized I also had one I needed for my FTF BC.The Lions of Fifth Avenue by Fiona Davis and The Orphan Master's Son by Adam Johnson
My review for
Summer at Kangaroo Ridge by Nicole Hurley-Moorehttps://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Leona wrote: "Dracula by Bram Stoker"I read this for the first time a couple of years ago and really enjoyed it. It did creep me out a little though. Of course reading it during a storm where the wind was scratching the branches against the windows probably didn't help. LOL!
Teresa — That would definitely heighten the suspense and atmosphere, lol.
My last two books were non-cozies on my Nook:
Journaling Basics - Journal Writing for Beginners by Lisa Shea — not that I need instruction on this front, but it was free and it’s always interesting to see what others have to say on the subject.
Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit by Jeanette Winterson, an LGBTQ fiction. Not a book I would normally pick up, but it fit a Popsugar Challenge prompt of a “sapphic” book without being too graphic and was a short, quick read. I could have easily read it in one day, had I started in the morning instead of the evening. It was a bit weird and imaginative — the way the story is told made me think of magical realism — but though the writing is good, I doubt I would seek out more by this author.
On to a couple of cozies next...

Currently reading In the Dream House by Carmen Maria Machado & The Rules of Magic by Alice Hoffman as my non-cozies. Almost done with Rules of Magic & loving it. In the Dream House I'm still early on, but I really like the style. I've been wanting to read since I read the author's short story collection, Her Body and Other Parties: Stories.
Was able to finally finish up this poetry collection this morning - it was just what I was in the mood for!Poet in Spain

Can't wait to hear what you think of it when you finish! I'm so excited for it to come out. I loved The Guest List, it pulled me out of my reading slump back in 2020!
