Here's my review for
Do No Harm by Christina McDonald, where a doctor decides to sell prescriptions for opiates to pay for her son's cancer treatment. I found it really hard to review as I struggled to understand how easily she made that decision (and others down the line) but it has heaps of 5 star reviews, so don't let me put you off!https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Here is my 5 star review of The Queen's Gambit by Walter Tevis.
The Queen's Gambit by Walter TevisMy rating: 5 of 5 stars
The Queen's Gambit by Walter Tevis is a beautifully paced novel exploring the passion and dedication of a child prodigy turned chess master. I received this book as a gift from my father after I had watched the Netflix series and began reading it out of a sense of obligation.
The five star rating reflects how surprised I was by my enjoyment of the book. I usually don't like the 'tortured genius', nor the 'special orphan' stereotype. However, the pace of the novel ensures that you never feel bogged down in endless and unnecessary detail. The masterstroke of this book is its ability to paint a vidid picture of the world of chess amid the tension of the Cold War.
Even if you have watched the TV series, I would highly recommend the book. I found it to be superior.

Hi Lucy.
Sooo are you really new here...? Can I feedback...? I am not trying to be mean you see.
The link at the top of the post does not take me to your review, it takes me to the generic description of the book.
If your review is the bit you wrote here, that is fine but it does mean I can't 'like' your review specifically.
The 'read all my reviews' link at the bottom of your post also does not seem to have a review on there for this book specifically.

Hi Deborah, Lucy made a link out of her "5 of 5 stars" and that goes to her review. I must admit, I found it confusing, too. I know I've missed other people's reviews for similar reasons.
Some people make arrangements for their own, inevitable Exit from life, but things don't go to plan in this mystery by Belinda Bauer. I loved its warmth and humour.

I really enjoyed Max Porter's unique young character, Lanny, in this unusual, fascinating mix of contemporary family story and ancient spirits. So good! (Made the Booker longlist)

My review for
A Million Things by Emily Spurr, a lovely book about a young girl and an older woman, both struggling with grief.https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
While Alexander McCall Smith's von Igelfeld series is not my favourite, and I know it doesn't appeal to everyone, if you bear in mind that the author is writing this with tongue firmly in cheek, then you find a very entertaining read. #5 in the series, Your Inner Hedgehog is another 5★ read for me.https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Those who have access to Audible might want to grab hold of a copy of Derek B. Miller's latest stand-alone, Quiet Time. It's a look at today's world but with Miller's trademark humour and excellent characters. Enjoyable and thought-provoking.5★s

Just finished Espresso Tales by Alexander McCall Smith. This is a re-read for me, and I don't allow myself many re-reads these days, but a bit of gentle whimsy is a good antidote for the world at the moment, and I felt the need.
Any recommendations for more pieces of whimsy welcome!

Just because it's aimed at Young Adult, doesn't mean an Old Adult like me can't enjoy it! I left too long between the first two books in Leonie Rogers's Frontier series. I won't leave it so long to read #3. Meanwhile, Frontier Resistance is an addictive fantasy/sci-fi read.4.5★s
