Thank you for the warm welcome !! I will focus on upgrading my magic staff for now and I won't go below 0 for my health points :) I saw some easy quests I could do for XP also !
Is there a topic anywhere for recommending books for certain tasks? Sometimes I have a really hard time with certain tasks (like, how am I supposed to know someone has a pet bunny without reading an entire book?), and it would be nice to have a place to ask for suggestions for those.
I think they are just scattered through this thread. People ask, people answer. Like for the bunny on the cover, a lot of us read Bunnicula and that has a couple sequels where the family still has a pet bunny. :)Another way is to look at other quester's threads. I wish I could say to search this thread, but I think the search function of GR forums is awful. :/

Sometimes the thread gets really busy with questions for the mods / about attacks / and recommendations. So many it's a good idea to start a separate thread?
RebeccaS wrote: "So many it's a good idea to start a separate thread?"I would like this. Other forums just don't understand when I need four books with a fish on the cover or a book with a chicken or duck in it.
eta: I would be willing to make a sharable Google spreadsheet for some of the more difficult to search for tasks, and update this in accordance with some thread. This would be easier to search than what would eventually become a multi-page thread, which would continue to have the original problem of "this is hard to search!"
eta 2: Or we can just make Goodreads lists and link them, I guess.
Bethany, I really like the idea of a spreadsheet for those hard to find books. I would definitely use and add to it.
Mods, am I allowed to just make a thread for this, or should I get Mod-approval or should a mod make it or is it a terrible idea that should not be implemented?
Megs wrote: "Bethany, I really like the idea of a spreadsheet for those hard to find books. I would definitely use and add to it."I would too!! I just dont have the spreadsheet skills to make it, but I would add to it.
Also would we have a place to still ask for recs? Or we can do here or in a new thread?
I can go make one for Book Recommendations.Any preference on the title?
If you want me to link in a spreadsheet just give me the link.

Just Book Recommendations or Recommendations for RPG Tasks would be fine.
link will be here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...
I'll probably make sheets by category (i.e., House quests, midas 1, midas 2, etc..) and only add columns once recommendations have been asked for/given. No reason to have a column that there's no data for, I figure.

Yay! Thanks for organizing! Sometimes I know there were recommendations for a certain category, but going through 154 pages is basically impossible.

You are more than welcome to look at my thread. Page 1 is ongoing active quests, pages 6,7, and 8 have completed quests. For the really weird stuff, we all look at what others have done.
I think we all read the same fish books. LOL.
If you can set up a spreadsheet that we can shelve books to when we post our finished books, then that's fine. I don't wish to do data entry.
Dont be shy to ask in the Tavern. People have often come up with interesting and varied suggestions. I've discovered some wonderful authors based upon others' suggestions. ;-)
True that. If we could search just within this thread or within the NRPG subforum, that would be great, but I don't think GR has that. If I'm wrong, please tell me how!RebeccaS wrote: "Yay! Hi, everyone! My name is Briane : ) I am about to enter this world of thrilling adventure. But before that, I just have a couple of questions.
1) I read a great mixture of fiction and non-fictions book. Does reading non-fiction books help with any quest or affect progress at all?
2) Can I use the books I have read throughout my life or is it limited to the ones I have read this year?
Sorry about the silly question.
Looking forward to this adventure

For the second question, that's answered in the Welcome Rules post. The Welcome Basket includes "up to 15 books read in the 12 months prior to starting."
I don't know how reading non-fiction affects the progress, as I don't read that much of it, but I'm sure that there are quite a few quests that will allow you to use those books (like the 5,000 Leagues Under the Sea quest).
At the very least, you can use them to level up your sword.
I'm pretty sure the only thing non fiction wouldn't work for would be your staff. All other quests it shouldn't matter if it fits the quest criteria
I've been a bit awol recently! So I've spent a few hours today (more than I thought I would need!) updating my tote and assigning stuff to quests to see where I am. I figured I may as well take a swipe at Eisdrake while I was at it and also took out the Great Yellow Dragon. I thought about having a go at the Great Novel Dragon but my max hp is still 27 and I couldn't get the numbers to work without wasting loads of healing potions so I think I'll level up before having another go at him!Now to decide where to go from here, as there's a lot of different directions to go in the game now. I think I'm going to finish training my puppy and obtaining some more essential items before I start looking into magic.
Loving the idea of a recommendation spreadsheet, I'll be happy to add to it wherever possible.
Hi Briane. Welcome to the game! I don't read a lot of non-fiction, but I have used a few. They work good for the "read a book with *blank* on cover" as well.
I found it!:"Jun 23, 2015 09:03AM

From the rules: "You cannot attack monster if your health is at 0.
Your health does not go below 0. (Example: Hero Health 1, Monster attacks for 5, Hero Health is 0)."
I'm going to interpret this to say you can drink a health potion at 0 health but you can't launch an attack at 0 health."
Because taking a potion doesn't count towards a turn and I'm pretty sure we could take potions at any time during a round
I would like to know what Kelly thinks about it.Taking Kelly's example. If I have 1 HP and monster attacks me let's say for 18 HP. I'm at zero HP. Then I drink a minor health potion and am at 5 HP. In the second round I attack, then the monster attacks for 18 HP. I end up with 0 again.
I don't like it. It's iffy. Unless you end up at a "fair zero". You have 18 HP, the monster attacks for 18 HP, you're at zero HP, drink a potion and attack in the following round. I know you were talking about this and it sounds fair-ish to me.
I joined quite a while ago but got overwhelmed and just lurked a bit. Do you recommend doing a spreadsheet to keep track of everything. And if so would somebody be willing to share it? Doing wobble has got me back to being interested in trying this again.
Joyce wrote: "I joined quite a while ago but got overwhelmed and just lurked a bit. Do you recommend doing a spreadsheet to keep track of everything. And if so would somebody be willing to share it? Doing wobble..."Mine is linked a few pages back. It's not publically editable, but I believe you can copy it. I'm still adding to it though. Not all of the quests are on it yet.
I don't think she would go back and change her mind after people have been fighting it this was thus far.You wouldn't drink a health potion if you weren't going to then launch another attack, so I'm not sure why else she would say you can do this.
Maybe it does have to be a "fair zero", but maybe if you have the extra health potions then by all means go ahead and keep going back to zero?
I think Ysmay works well. You could be knocked out and she automatically heals you and brings you back (as she is not knocked out)
Yea I dunno it's hard to say. Because she wrote the healing and going to 0 hp stuff long before she created something like lady ysmay, which changes the whole healing dynamic..
I read a fair amount of non-fiction and they can be used in a lot of quests. Some quests ask for something on the cover, or a word in the text, or the Spell-It-Out rules use author or title. Non-fiction books are quite useful! The only place where I think they *won't* work is for "a character who..." quests. Since the people in non-fiction books aren't "characters" because they are real people. :)No questions are silly! We are all confused a lot of the time, haha. This is a great place to ask for help. :) I've gotten tons of help here. Welcome.

The post above is #3033. Kelly further explains in this post, #3040. With this info, I've been doing my battles 'wrong' in that I've wasted potions/eggs. :/Kelly wrote: "Drat. People always coming up with loopholes.
The intent I had for the not going negative was that you couldn't keep attacking and get further and further into negative. I wasn't intending on people "dying" then reviving and continuing the attack.
How about we go with if you hit 0 HP you can heal and do another attack. Going below 0 HP would end the fight.
Unless anyone see's a problem with this, I'll update the rules tonight to reflect the clarification."
Alyssa wrote: "Perfect! Thanks for finding that again for us :) now we know lol"Ditto! So "fair zero" + healing does the job. ;)
I added this post to the FAQ:"Battles - Hitting zero HP in a fight
You cannot attack monster if your health is at 0. If you hit 0 HP you can heal and do another attack. Going below 0 HP would end the fight."
Is it o.k. or would you add anything else to the post?
Bethany wrote: "Joyce wrote: "I joined quite a while ago but got overwhelmed and just lurked a bit. Do you recommend doing a spreadsheet to keep track of everything. Alyssa wrote: "Maybe just add the word "if you hit the exactly zero" but I think it's great!"Added. Thanks, Alyssa.
I don't think you are allowed to go below 0 at all, except when fighting eisdragon, so it is misleading to say that it ends the fight.❀Tea❀ wrote: "Morgan wrote: "I think 0 just means you're knocked out and have to wait to attack anything else -- like with the dragon. That's special eisdragon thing. :)
@ Cathy. That's taken word from word from Kelly's post - it's a quote. And it actually makes sense. I remember one of the first fight in this game somebody miscalculated and ended bellow zero. We joked that she's dead. That's when Kelly came up with "nobody dies in this game" policy - if you accidentaly end up below zero - you lost the fight but your health is zero and you're not dead - you can heal from that using potions or other means. So going bellow zero HP means you lost the fight.
But the key word is "accidentally". You can't do it deliberately so I find it misleading to include in the directions. Just leave it at "you may not go below 0".
Question about the Runner Zombie (100 attack 500 HP) -- how can anyone survive even 1 hit from it without being in the 20s for Hero level?Shield potion cuts the atk down to 50. Can we use more than 1 shield potion in the same round? Can we use the shield potion and the Blue Gem in the same round (which would only help for 1 round anyway)? If no and no, I don't see how to kill this guy without 400+ nuts. :/
What am I missing? I do admit I'm a little exhausted / braindead still due to Halloween.
She said we'd be getting an update soon that coincides with her birthday- I figure that's gotta coming be any time now, so maybe that will help with it. We shall have to see

Ahh yeah, all the zombies weren't meant to be killed right away.
And yes, I've been slacking since I've been sick so everything else took longer :-/
I haven't forgotten about you guys.
Ok! I thought I just forgot about something, haha. :) I'm not up to the Runner yet anyway, but trying to plan ahead. Sorry you've been ill, Kelly. Hope you feel better soon. :)

I always assumed that once anybody whether monster or hero hits zero the battle ends. You don't get to start another round and the healing takes place at the beginning of the round.
Anyway would be great if it wasn't true. Will wait till Monday, Teresa. :)
Welcome to the game, Caroline. :)
