Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments We all really should be cheerleading ;) No one is off the hook with that task I think :P

Cat herder really is an apt description of YLTO in general. Look at all those cat avatars...

message 52: by Tasha (new)

Tasha I can certainly give leadership a try but no, no big sticks here. ;)

Marie (UK) (mazza1) | 2277 comments Hello happy to be part of the team, have i missed what the date is?
I can commit to 3 books, the first toppled i read much more but am having a bit of trouble getting into my reading again after the festive season.

I don't mind being a deputy team leader as i am usually in a different time zone to others. However i have my grandchildren for the 13th and 14th so would only be around in the evenings

Glad to have you on our team Marie :) We are just waiting for Jmom to tell us what the tasks are going to be and then we can start planning and gophering our books.

message 61: by Casceil (new)

Casceil | 2728 comments Tasha, you will be a great team leader. And you don't really need a big stick (that's the mods). You just need to be the calm center, and I sense you will be good at that.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments Tasks are up people! Not sure how they will all work together yet, but at least we can start looking.

As always, I am flexible with my 20 billion books unread in my house.

message 78: by Lisa (last edited Jan 23, 2015 03:17PM) (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I am pretty flexible too, although I am not the biggest fan of sci-fi, dystopian and chick-lit. However, it sounds like this toppler is going to be a lot simpler than previous ones so there may not be a great deal of planning involved.

message 79: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I'm pretty flexible too. I prefer not to read horror or thriller or other scary stuff, but other than that most things should work.

I can't login too often until next Friday, so once we start planning feel free to suggest which task I should read and I'll have a quick look to see if I have a fitting book.

message 80: by Lara (new)

Lara | 1426 comments Urgh. I've started looking for books to read, and am having a hard time knowing where to start. So many options! I guess the real challenge will be in the scoring.

message 81: by Anne (Booklady) (last edited Jan 23, 2015 08:56PM) (new)

Anne (Booklady) Molinarolo (wwwgoodreadscomAnneMolinarolo) | 1282 comments Please no Sci-fi or horror for me. I can do chick lit since it doesn't bother me. And I love my thrillers. I don't mind other categories, maybe fantasy, either.
scairdy cat photo: cat 7_4a6439d7d9bd0.gif

Yep I don't do Sci-fi, horror, and fantasy well.

message 82: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59890 comments My usual strategy is to mix audiobooks with paperbacks or ebooks that are short.

At a quick glance:

John & Lorena Bobbitt (Horror) - Seed is 250 pages.

Gene Roddenberry and Majel Barrett (SciFi) - The Martian is 11 hours.

Collecting comic books – Read a book that’s part of a series - Wayward is 9 hours long.

There are lots of possibilities.

Bella and Edward are the Horror book. Get your mind off of Hadrian and Royce :)

I just started listening to The Martian at work tonight. Only on disc 1, but the narration is great!

Marie (UK) (mazza1) | 2277 comments i have a book with a human head on - Me & Emma Me & Emma by Elizabeth Flock
if no one has that covered. I can look more later but just making dinner at moment

message 85: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments SO I think the smart plan is to allocate books/tasks in the sections that get bonus points for completion. Then we can focus on reading whatever we want for the hell of it.

Plan?

message 86: by Rusalka, Moderator (last edited Jan 24, 2015 06:43AM) (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments They are:

What does your date look like? (For these books, the item must be on the cover.)
Read a book with a human head (or a human looking alien). Mostly the head, as little of the body as possible)
Read a book with a pair of eyes
Read a book with a torso, a frontal view
Read a book with a pair of legs
Read a book with a pair of shoes (you can tell a lot about a person by their shoes)

You never know where your Mystery Date might be from, your own neighborhood, across the country, or halfway around the world.
Read a book set in Africa
Read a book set in South America
Read a book set in Canada
Read a book set in an alien world or on some type of spaceship
Read a book set on an island

What are you date’s hobbies?
Collecting comic books – Read a book that’s part of a series
Shooting – Read a book with some serious gunplay, or some type of weapon being used
Reading – Read an author that’s new to you
Clubbing – Read a book from another participant’s tbr
Role Play Games – Read a book with a geek as a character, or where gaming takes place
Crafting – Read a book with a main character does some type of craft for a hobby

Tasha Sorry, had a busy day yesterday and am just seeing all the tasks and posts this morning. I have to run out shortly but will be back later this afternoon. I'll have more time to sit and let all this sink in and start figuring out my plan as well. Not a great leader so far, sorry!! Looks like Rusalka has stepped up..thanks...lol. :)

Sounds like a plan to me.

message 91: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59890 comments Thought I'd add the points thingy to help plan.

Points

Points are going to be easy to calculate.

10 points -> Each book read

Bonus:
25 points -> Complete all "What does your date look like" tasks
25 points -> Complete all tasks for "Where your date is from"
30 points -> Complete all tasks for "What are your date's hobbies?"

*Each section may be completed more than once, but bonus points will only be given once.

There are 25 secret bonus points that will be awarded to one team at the end.

message 92: by Tasha (new)

Tasha I agree, a good planning strategy.

message 93: by Janice, Moderator (last edited Jan 24, 2015 08:02AM) (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59890 comments Okay - I could read:

What your date looks like:
Torso - Moon Called Moon Called (Mercy Thompson, #1) by Patricia Briggs

Where does your date live:
Canada - Crow Lake

What is your date's hobby?
Collecting comic books - Wayward

message 94: by Lisa (last edited Jan 24, 2015 09:21AM) (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments Here are some books I could read. I can't commit to more than three for definite but they are all quite short so I may be able to squeeze another one in at the end:

What is your date's hobby?:

Toby's Room - Shooting
Strange Meeting - Shooting
The Daughter of Time - Reading
Glimpse - Reading (will also fit 'What does your date look like' as there is a girl's head on the cover)
Sherlock: The Sign of Four - Collecting Comic Books

These will all fit tasks in the 'Couples' category too.

Does this mean you want me to do the head (for what does your date look like) its just that that one is not on your list to complete

message 96: by Marie (UK) (last edited Jan 24, 2015 09:12AM) (new)

Marie (UK) (mazza1) | 2277 comments I also have Foxglove Summer on my reading list for hobbies - collecting it is number 4 in a series

i would be happy to read something form someone else's TBR as long as it is not science fiction / fantasy i do not read a huge amount of those

Also the UK is an island i have lots of books set in the UK does this count?

message 97: by Casceil (new)

Casceil | 2728 comments Looking through the book covers on my TBR list did not produce as many choices as I expected for "how your date looks", but there are a couple.
The Manual of Detection by Jedediah Berry and Murder on the Rocks (Gray Whale Inn Mystery, #1) by Karen MacInerney .

message 98: by Liz (new)

Liz (lizvegas) | 504 comments I have books that would fit each of "How your date looks" tasks. Do you want to start in that section, and assign/fill in team members to tasks?

Or maybe we should first try to assign tasks to team members that have books that would fit in the "Date's Hobbies" tasks, since that section yields the most bonus points.

There are 11 of us, and 16 tasks to be completed that would result in bonus points.. So if we get it worked out where each of us reads 1 or 2 from those tasks, we will achieve all the bonus. Then, for those who want to read more, any task can be chosen.

message 99: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I had a quick look, and I think I have books for all tasks of the location section, and almost all of the body parts (no eyes big on the cover I think. Lots of people on covers though, and they do all have eyes).

I'll check for hobbys later.

message 100: by Anne (Booklady) (new)

Anne (Booklady) Molinarolo (wwwgoodreadscomAnneMolinarolo) | 1282 comments I quickly gazed at the sections - I have books for all of them. I'll get back on here tonight and take a closer look - need to get off, now since I'm doing the National Readathon #timetoread.
