Thanks Patty! A lot of extra work but a way of doing it until it's fixed. Here's my last response - it's now got a ticket and will be dealt with accordingly :)

Thanks for taking the time to write in about this and for providing the required information. I have escalated this to our developers and they are aware of the issue. I've added your report to the developer ticket and I'll let you know once it's been resolved.

We are sorry for the inconvenience and we appreciate your understanding and patience as we work toward a resolution.

I had the same issues yesterday with dates, shelves etc. I was using a Mac, OS 14.5 with Safari 17.5, so it clearly isn't device/OS or browser specific.

Just letting everyone know we now have to tick the new box at the bottom of each thread which says "notify me when people comment". No longer will it be automatic when we comment, to follow the thread!

message 904: by PattyMacDotComma (new)

PattyMacDotComma | 3299 comments I just saw that on a review and have now ticked it here. My sister always says "change is war!"

message 905: by Brenda, Aussie Authors Queen (new)

Brenda | 79989 comments Mod
It's a nuisance, especially for mods who follow most if not all threads!

message 906: by PattyMacDotComma (new)

PattyMacDotComma | 3299 comments Does this mean they're eliminating most of the email traffic?

I forgot to tick the Notify Me box at the bottom of a recent review, so I got no emails regarding comments. But I did get a notification in the long list of notifications about everything else on the webpage.

Now I've ticked the Notify Me box at the bottom of the review, so I'll see if GR is still sending emails about comments or not.

No emails except the Updates at 11am every day Patty. I'm now using the Notifications icon, plus the Discussions link. I find those who've "liked" my reviews on the notification button, the comments in threads through the discussions link. And still I'm missing things :(

message 908: by PattyMacDotComma (new)

PattyMacDotComma | 3299 comments How would you find a comment from someone who isn't in any of the discussions we're in? I get comments from people who may be a fan of the book (or who have a bone to pick about it) but who aren't in any groups I'm in.

I'm also trying to remember to tick the box under, say, your reviews, so I can see your replies. Sometimes these turn into mini-conversations, eh?

Sigh... it's a First World Problem, really.

The notification icon, top right corner, one away from your PM messages icon, shows comments on reviews from random people, as well as review likes.

message 910: by Krystal (new)

Krystal (krystallee6363) | 2304 comments Not a fan of this at all! I liked it better when I get automatically notified and can opt out any time. This is going to mean I miss a lot of comments I think!

I've never noticed there was a 'Notify Me' box. I just check in on the reviews now and again for comments, so generally miss any made after a few weeks. People probably think I'm really lazy in not replying!

The notify me box has only appeared in the last couple of days. All this change is very new.

Oh well, I don't feel such a duffer in that case! It would be good if GR let us know when they make important changes!

100% agree!! But we all know they never do!!!

Carolyn | 9837 comments Has anyone else had book covers disappearing from their annual challenge page?

I've had a few change to just a blank box with a question mark in the middle and when I've clicked on it the edition (kindle in all cases so far) has disappeared from the list of editions. I've replaced them with the paperback versions, but why would someone have removed the kindle versions? Weird!

Yes! Its kindle versions for me too. But when I look at the list of editions there'll be other kindle versions that still have their cover

I checked again and its not only kindle, some ebooks & a paperback too.

This title I read a while back https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/5...

It's on some of my shelves with the date I read it, but my review now says I shelved it this month.

message 922: by PattyMacDotComma (new)

PattyMacDotComma | 3299 comments In the account settings, there used to be many pages listing all the threads and notifications we'd ever ticked to follow, and we could change how we wanted to be notified. We had to delete them manually, if we didn't want to follow something.

It was very cumbersome, but at least we could see which topics in which groups we had chosen.

Rowan MacDonald | 404 comments So, I’m not getting email notifications from Goodreads whatsoever anymore. But now, they seem to be attacking the functionality of our shelves.

“Reordering is currently disabled for larger shelves. Sorry for the inconvenience!”

So, my want-to-read list is currently in disarray, as I can’t view it by “order” and have no idea if this is a permanent thing now, or what’s going on.

There was always a link stating Notify me when people comment, I used it all the time, doing Librarian work. And also for important threads in the 2 groups I Mod.

But the check box is new. And you could click on the link at any time, not just when making a comment.

Jonquil | 240 comments Rowan wrote: "So, I’m not getting email notifications from Goodreads whatsoever anymore. But now, they seem to be attacking the functionality of our shelves.

First (not my main reason for chiming in) I have been following this thread for a while and the notifications never stopped..

Now, my main reason for typing. I have clicked on the notification icon each time hoping that someone would mention the issues I have been having. Today I saw the first comments about it.

1) Each time I open my books list I am also seeing strange icons rather than the book cover that was previously there.

2) Every time I go to "my books" there are books I listed years ago that now have no "date read" and a September 2024 "date posted".

The first few days I saw the mess, I tried to clean things up and created an even bigger mess. Now I just find myself silently praying for patience and calm.

3) I also can't get the lists to sort-- something I thought would allow me to remove the distracting older books so I could focus on the current books when participating in challenges.

Thanks for posting that I am not alone in my frustration.

One closing note. Every two months I download from the Import/Export page (takes forever since the file is huge). I save that file on my Google Chrome account. That way I have a relatively accurate book list somewhere other than goodreads. Before I retired, all my jobs required us to backup our data in several formats in case there was ever a problem (fire, flood, breach, equipment failure, lost laptop, etc.) It's one of the things I carried from my work life to my home life. It gives me a sliver of peace of mind.

You used to have options to notify or not - none, individual, digest, & another option - & now I have no idea what ticking the notify box even does.

message 930: by Catsalive (new)

Catsalive | 1467 comments Such a stupid change. Having individual emails turned off by default & needing to make a conscious effort to turn them on makes sense, but not removing them altogether.

Kylie, the notifications pop up in red on the notification bell 4th circle to the left of your picture on the header.

I removed all the emails from GR years ago, and just kept the notifications, so far nothing has changed for me.

I much prefer the emails. Sigh!

Brenda | 79989 comments Mod
Yes Kylie - and it's only just started. I've just gone to the "Help" page and there's nothing there about the current problem. I think it would be because suddenly everyone is using the Discussions button, and of course it's now overloaded. Cart before the horse once again!!! I wonder how long it will take to fix this one???

Yes they are both the same! Thank goodness the group one is working!!

message 942: by Tr1sha (new)

Tr1sha | 222 comments Some of you may have missed it because of the time difference, or perhaps it wasn’t a global fault, but in the UK early this morning Goodreads had crashed completely. It has gradually returned, so it all seems ok now except for the group discussions button which still gives an error message.

message 943: by Helen (last edited Oct 01, 2024 02:09PM) (new)

Helen (helen57) | 3411 comments The group discussions button is working for me :) and it looks like they have stopped adding books that I have years ago for the moment, but they haven't taken them of the My Books for for me fingers crossed :)

Although I am not getting my daily email :(

message 944: by Brenda, Aussie Authors Queen (new)

Brenda | 79989 comments Mod
The discussions are working again, thank goodness. Helen I've just been ignoring the problem with the books and hoping it'll sort out soon. I just raise my eyebrows when someone likes a review from years ago, or a status update! And there are many. Fingers crossed that will be fixed soon and will revert to what it's supposed to be!

message 945: by Brenda, Aussie Authors Queen (new)

Brenda | 79989 comments Mod
Re the daily email, we're not getting that; the monthly email saying what the groups are all reading next; any emails for friend requests; emails about voting on polls..... None of them, and probably more. It's quite ridiculous in my humble opinion!

Jazzy Lemon (jazzylemon) | 944 comments Brenda wrote: "The discussions are working again, thank goodness. Helen I've just been ignoring the problem with the books and hoping it'll sort out soon. I just raise my eyebrows when someone likes a review from..."

But people like reviews from years ago because they read the book and want to see what someone else has said :)

I do it all the time.

message 947: by Brenda, Aussie Authors Queen (new)

Brenda | 79989 comments Mod
Yes I know, but in this instance it's because of the GR glitch which is showing many of our older books coming up as current :)

No they've finished Leonie. We have to use the notifications - either the drop-down under Community, or the icon bell top right hand corner.

This is sad, I have to say. (Even if it was frustrating when my email would suddenly become unverified again.) I'm now using the Community drop down.
